Check engine/VTM-4 & engine chokes at 5K RPM on free idle - Click HERE for Original Thread

Month ago the engine check and VTM-4 came on plus the car felt shaky at higher speeds on highway (like wheel balance problem). Had wheels balanced and put high octane gas, which has cleared the lights for a while but now they're back.
I've tried to run the engine on max RPM (in park mode) but it chockes just below 5,000 RPM as it wasn't getting enough fule or something. Dealer has diagnosed "missfire" and has changed plugs. Lights are still on plus SRS light came on and engine chokes below 5K rpm.
Can someone help before I go back the the useless delarship?

Thanks,
AJ

What year? How many miles?
magicanj
It's 2001 model with 83K miles

Rev'ing engines without load is a bad idea, engines aren't designed for it. I wouldn't be surprised if the ECU prevents it.

Can it pass 5k rpm in gear? If so, I wouldn't worry about it.

I wonder if its the EGR valve clogged up.

I won't be able to run it on the road with 5K rpm (speed limits). How can I check the EGR for cloging signs?

Dude, I can get to 5k rpm in first gear at like 20-25mph, what sort of speed limits are preventing you from trying that?

EGR clog I'd think would have more to do with sluggish operation, hesitation, etc.

I was ableto confirm with a mechanic that it's an air safety valve that won't allow high rpm's without load -so all is good with that.
Still need to get rid of this annoying Engine check light - how can I cleare it to see if the problem has been solved after I've switced to higher octane fuel?

Good to hear about the RPM limit. I don't think your check engine is due to bad gas. It's probably an O2 sensor, egr valve, something else.

Go to autozone tell them to pull the codes and clear it.

Won't the error codes show those sensors being at fault?
The only error code my dealer is reading it the "misfire" code.

My bad, I thought you didn't know why the CEL was on. Misfire, I still doubt that's from gas.

Yeah have autozone reset it and see if it comes back.
