Hi,

I don't know if anyone has this problem. I start noticing when traveling at about 60-70Kph (~37-43MpH), my X shifts up to the 5th gear too early, then that is when I start noticing a slight vibration on the peddle (specially with sandals on). It feels like the engine is struggling to gain speed. The RPM meter drops to like 1200... Sometimes I have to pull it into manual and stuff down to 4th gear.. wow, feels much better, no vibration, smooth, and the RPM sticks above 1500.. I noticed this happens sometimes..

Could this be related to the type of gas I used?

I do have a light foot when driving, maybe that is the problem.. I really don't know. On my father's 2004 Pilot, I never had this issue. The engine feel smooth at ALL RPM..

what gas do you use, it has to be 91+ octane or its not good. My MDX will shift up to 5th around 50, but sometimes if I stay at 39+ for a little bit, it will shift up to save gas.

I am using 91 Octane. Somehow, it doesn't feel right that my X is shift this early... I understand that it needs to shift up to save gas, but I think my X is shifting too early at the wrong speed.

Cruising at 65/Kph, it goes into 5th, RPM drops to below 1500, I can feel the engine struggling making that deep humming noise/vibration. When I try to tap lightly on the gas pedal, it struggles to gain speed.. doesn't go any faster. I have to push the pedal a little bit harder then I can feel the RPM reving to gain speed, but once it hits that sweet spot.. ~65/Kph, I can feel the struggle in the engine....

I find this happens between 63-70 KPH...

Could it be that I have a bad gear box/Tranny?

no, it is not a transmission problem. Take it to acura and have them reset the ECU/PCM for the car, and have then do an idle relearn procedure on it. Also tell the dealer of the problem you are having as well so they can document it for future reference. You can do the relearn yourself too, unplug the battery for 30 minutes, then turn on the car with all accessories off, radio off, ac off and so forth, and let the car idle for about 10-15 minutes.

It sounds like you are having the vibration problem that I have. Please see the thread vibration 1,200 to 1500 rpm. If you run the rpm up even if you are in park you may feel it in the gas and brake pedal. I am still trying to figure out the cause, but it seems to go away if it is warmer out, above 60 degrees F. I feel the vibration at 30 and 45 mph. Please let me know if this is the same for you.

The MDX's transmission has a TALL 5th gear (about 1,200 plus RPM drop from 4th) and shifts up EARLY.

Sounds like yours is excessively early, but I am very dissapointed on how I have to hunt between 4th and 5th on the highway on hills. If they were going to boost 5th up for higher MPG, they really needed to add a 6th gear.

I am with you on that one.
I have asked the question here before (can one re-program the transmission...).
When traveling in town, I keep my right hand close to the shifter and I often select manual 4 before the stupid thing up-shifts to 5th at 60 kmh and leaves you with as much torque as if you were pulling your house on a skid.

Interestingly enough, I have bought mine in Edmonton. Maybe they curse all units sold in Alberta?

A light foot will sometimes cause an early shift. I do not know the specified RPM shift points but your dealer should be able to tell you. If it is not in spec have them change.

Vibration can be caused by running the vehicle in a gear is too high for the driving conditions. This is actually normally known as "lugging."

The gas that you use has absolutely nothing to do with shift points.

I've had this issue since the X was new ...when i am on the on-ramp I have to switch to manual mode otherwise i get that slllooowwww incease in speed when 5th drops in way too early in my opinion.

Didn't know you could reset the ECU/PCM for the car and have then do an idle relearn procedure to fix this ...thought this was a pure transmission issue/design.

You sure sound like you know what's going on.
Can you explain with more details for the average person how this will really fix the problem?
Reset and the X will re-learn.
Then, what makes it learn different than the first time?
Do you basically need to do the ''disconnect everything'' part at 2AM in a desert and then hit her hard as soon as you plug everything back?

I wish only that the tranny would NEVER upshift to 5th gear below 95 kmh.

Update:
By the way that resetting thing works :29: for problems when you find the gears are changing harshly...I got them to do it and the hard changing of the 2nd gear is gone :) ...You can't really get away from the slow down from 4th to 5th (unless you're in manual mode) but it's definitely smoother now with the reset done :)

Reset alway works but trans will learn over time to adapt to driver's driving style. I have my 07 for almost a year now with 15,000 miles and its actually shifting just the way I like it. My 07 will now hold in 3rd gear until 45mph then skip to 4th and quickly to 5th. I love it. Its use to shift too early when I first got my 07 but now it has adapt to my driver style and my local road condition.
