Excessive Reliance on Rear View Camera - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm a relatively new 2008 MDX owner, (Silver Tech and Entertainment), and love the car. My wife is the primary driver, and I wanted to make sure others don't primarily rely on the camera to back up. My wife became totally addicted to just looking at the camera view, did not see that the hatch had not completely shut, and ended up having the rear hatch crunch up against the top of the garage opening. Ouch! Mostly cosmetic damage (paint and dents).

I think the camera is a great way to see if you are really close to something, but we should all remember to actually turn around and look where we are going when backing up. Prudent use of side and review view mirrors should be the next priority, with the camera used to identify things that may not be directly observable.

Another thing is - it does not accurately reflect distances to other cars, hydrants, people etc...

So,my drill is look at screen, look at rearview mirro, look out rear windscreen physically...repeat until sure...or you hear the bang!

I guess I am a little confused. If the hatch was up and she was looking at the camera, she would have been watching airplanes and birds. With the auto opener and closer and I am not following how this happened as you described. Plus the MID shows that the hatch is open and you get beeps if the car goes into movement with the hatch open. At least my 07' performs this way, maybe not your 08'.

This topic though, is why I installed the rear bumper sensors in addition to the camera.

The camera has a very wise angle lens, so the view is distorted. I have gotten used to this and I can use the picture quite well to gauge how close I am to the car behind me when I park. I've never hit anything behind me while using the camera and I can get within a couple of inches of the object. I find the camera much more useful than the parking sensors that were on my prior minivan. Those sensors would light up all the way when you were within 6 inches of the object behind you. That's pretty useless for me as I can do at least that well without the sensors.

I'm with Randy B. totally confused how she could hit the hatch looking at the camera with the hatch open...the camera would be facing up in the air....plus than dinging from the info saying the hatch is open would be annoying. Clarify...:8:

To those of you who are confused by how my wife could have crunched the rear hatch into the top of the garage while looking at the rear view camera...well I am confused as well. But happen it did. She was pretty upset with herself so I thought better of asking for a detailed analysis of how she effed up.

What happened I think was that the hatch was initially down, but not latched (daughter's softball bag was in the way). She probably looked at the camera when the hatch was still partially closed, and then looked at the side view mirror to make sure she wasn't too close to the side of the garage. Perhaps the initial movement of the car backwards was enough to jar the hatch and since it wasn't latched, it started to open.

My point is that, as one of the previous respondants said, you need to use all the options at hand, including a physical look back. If my wife had turned around she would have seen the hatch was rising up and could have stopped.

Well, I am taking the mdx into the body shop Friday, so they will get it back in good as new condition, I hope.

As far as the message saying the hatch door is open, well, let's just say that if she had been paying attention to such things, the incident wouldn't have happened in the first place.

I just opened the lift back and put the car in reverse, and you are right about the chimes going off. I think I will let this one go...I'd like to stay married!

Are you kidding? This incident is a great bargaining chip! If you ever screw up in the future, or just want that extra pressure for when you truly need something, you can say, "Remember when you backed up the MDX, honey...?"

It was pouring rain today and one drop landed on the camera just right. It acted like a fish eye lens and it looked like the car was inside a fish bowl.

...also, it would seem there is no way to open the side window even a crack without getting soaked. I remember reading that on a thread somewhere, but nothing drives the point home like a stream of cold water!

are you married? bargaining chips like that dont work ... she would cry, then turn it around on you for trying to make her feel bad.

Anytime something happens to an automobile, just take you wife's story and dont question. You never get the full story and its always someone else's fault. . . regardless of the laws of physics

Don't you know it  ...can't blame them for stuff or say anything is their fault especially when it comes to the car...

car questions like:

1. didn't you hear the ding sound from the alarm
2. didn't you see the light on on the dash
3. didn't you smell something burning
4. didn't you know that this works like this so you don't have to do something like that
5. why didn't you call and ask something rather than play mechanic on the fly

You learn NEVER to ask since it gets you no where ..heh :)

You don't know the drill by now dj-mdx2...if you did it it's your fault ...if they did it ..it's not their fault ..I can't up to now figure out who to blame when they do something wrong with a vehicle ...but I don't dare point fingers since a 10 min problem could lead to half a day hehehe :) ...bottom line :p

The hatch must've been partially open - but resting on the bottom.

Do not be bargaining with her.

This is a good and honest wife...she a keeper !

Yup, been married for 16 years now  I believe (and you're totally entitled to disagree) that "discussing" (arguing amicably for the most part) points of contention is one of the ways we've kept together all these years. Bottling things up just makes things worse IMHO. And incidents like this are fodder for gentle and not-so-gentle ribbing later on.

Besides, my earlier post was a bit tongue-in-cheek, though not totally. :D

Cool! And before you close this chapter on your life, remember that you (more correctly, your wife) are not alone:

New method for closing the door

Dumbest Thing You've Done To Your MDX

Almost been tempted to drag the trash up the driveway but remembered this last thread.
