| After driving an 08 while my 01 was in for a new tranny, I liked it enough to consider a trade in. My 01 is in the shop for the first time, and falls out of warranty next month with 62,000 miles. With its little 240 hp engine, it matches the 08 in straight line performance, I have Nav and Bose, and I get about 4 more MPG over the 08. Without looking at the dash the interriors look very much the same. I just slapped on 4 new wheels and tires from an RDX for 600$ New is always nicer, but given the upgrade will cost about 35 thousand dollars, what would you do? |

| Keep what you have it has low miles. You can drive it additional 40-60 kmiles no problem at all. I have 1.5 Gen X aka 04 model without paying the additional $24k. |

| If you got the cash to spend, I'd say go for it. You get newer features, another warranty. On the other hand, you can keep driving that for awhile. Its only been in service one time over 7 years? You can always save your money for it later. Since you arent in a rush, you can always keep shopping til you find the deal that you are happy with. |

Just got the transmission changed and put money into new tires? MPG a concern? Don't want to part with $35,000? All good points for keeping the old chariot. Why waste money.
You are not obligated to pump money into Acura or the economy to keep them going by buying a car too often. Enjoy your improved gen 1. |

While I like the new electronic gadgets, I still prefer the older generation design and spacious feel.

| If you want a SUV that looks like a tugboat, has a front grill designed by some drunken japanese guy while he was watching Gladiator, is actually less safer than the first gen, and if you want to spend 10 minutes finding the volume up button on that dizzying dash, well then go ahead and spend a small mortgage for it! (Gosh I know I gonna get flamed but what the heck):D |

^^ now you must die !!! ...lol ...kidding :2:
I would say keep the 01 your mileage is way low ...and the resale wouldn't be worth it if you sold it or traded up ..that vehicle is worth more in hand with that age and mileage just because you know its history. If you were outright buying a new X to keep that one company and you had the money for it sure ...but if it's to switch one for the other then nope not worth it. Your X has a lot of life left in it.... years by the way you are driving it ...wait till like 100k plus before you think of selling it. My 0.02 |

I agree that "beauty" is in the eye of the beholder and therefore is very subjective, but I don't agree that the 2nd Gen is, as you put it, "actually less safer than the first gen" . I believe SAFETY requires a more OBJECTIVE approach. But to the OP, yeah, I believe keeping your Gen 1 is the more practical thing to do.;) |

| The dealer ( a few of them ) offered me $7500 as a trade. I put it on ebay and it went up to 12K, before close. I started thinking, today 12K is not much to start with. I pulled it off ebay, and decided to keep her until the 100MPG SUVs come out. Thanks for the input. |

You made the right choice. If your '01 is still going strong and you enjoy driving it, then what's the point of upgrading to an '08? True, the 2nd generation MDX is a helluva lot more fun to drive, but it sounds to me as though you're not going to be doing a whole lot of autocrossing, so this isn't going to be a huge loss.
Anyway, drive your current X into the ground and then take a look at what's on the market. Who knows, your 100MPG SUV may very well be on sale then. I plan on doing the same with my '07, though I'm shooting for a flying car that runs on a Mr. Fusion as a replacement vehicle.
Regards,
Adam
PS - BTW, the 2nd gen is hardly "less safer" than the 1st gen given that it scores 5-stars in all crash ratings, has active head restraints, ACE body structure, and can stop from 70 mph over 30ft sooner than the 1st generation X (to say nothing of the 2nd gen's superior ability to perform accident avoidance maneuvers thanks to its better suspension and more advanced AWD system). |

| Well, sort of taking all the advise. Told the wife I may keep the old one, and got a earful. The 01 is too good to trade in. The compromise is, I am going to try to get a bargin on an 08, and if I can, my brother gets a nice present when he returns from Iraq. I wore his old clothes until I was 18, let him drive my old MDX. |

| We have owned a 2002 MDX since intro and recently bought a 2008 for my wife. She really loves the improvement in the NAV (versus 2002 NAV). Probably worth at least $1,000 if someone is deciding between gen1 or gen2. |

Good decision...
I checked out the 08's while getting my last oil change on the 02. Other than the technology I saw no reason to upgrade given the cost. I get better mileage and I can run regular gas It does all I want and I don't need to worry about those first few scratches in parking lots. Insurance is cheaper as well. I have a GPS in my Phone / PDA that works quite well for those few times I need it.
Did they give you a 3yr/36000 warranty on the transmission replacement? Others have been given that and you should demand it for peace of mind.:) |

So... from a cost standpoint there is zero justification for a (roughly) $40k vehicle. Zero. It's pointless and excess. I'm probably one of the few Americans who can actually afford it (yes, I did pay cash as I do with everything else in life). But really, what have we come to when we are willing to spend close to the medium household income on a stupid truck? But... we're an emotional and impulsive lot and I guess there is something to be said for enjoying what you have, as long as it doesn't take away from other more important things (tithing, family, charity, etc).
Stepping off soap box now...
So that said, the critical factor to me was the SH-AWD. The only thing I drove that handled better was the X3 (and it was too small and has tranny issues). I drove a low-mile 06 and a 2-gen back-to-back and there is simply no comparison. It's not that the 1-gen's are bad by any means, it's just that the 2-gen's are unbelievable handling vehicles for their size. IMO, handling is the most important 'feature' in a vehicle decision. |
