Say no to the Air Deflector! - Click HERE for Original Thread

We just picked up our 2008 MDX Tech on April 25th. After 3-4 days I kept hearing a "whistle" above 38 mph. I scoured these forums and found the TSB about the blower motor. Well, that did not apply to my VIN and I heard the whistle regardless of the A/C and recirculation functions.

It turns out that the Acura OEM hood air deflector that I paid $231 (installed) on my brand new vehicle was the cause. As much as I like the look and supposed functionality, I can't live with a "whistle" so loud that I can hear it over the radio and road.

The dealer removed it and I'm "whistle" free. Besides getting my money back, Acura needs to change the design or kill this product. The dealer is calling Acura Corporate to discuss. Based on the fact that I never see another MDX on the road with one, they sell very few. Anyone know of a 3rd party one that works? I had a weather-tech air deflector on my 2005 MDX that was whistle free.
Thanks!

I've had mine installed approx 9 months, no whistle at all, their is a gasket that should fill the gap between the hood and airdeflector

I wonder if it wasn't installed properly. We installed ours ourselves about a month ago and travel at and above the speed you mentioned, daily. We've never heard a whistle.

I was thinking of getting one but now?? I have the full front end mask and the lower half fits like a glove and is great but the top half flaps like a mother. I have tried twising the straps to tighten it, put velcro on the bottom and the bottom of the hood, etc. I think it just needs a larger "spoiler" on the top half of the bra.

This is the first problem I've heard about the air deflector, so it could just be a problem with this specific deflector or install. 2 people on this thread haven't had an issue. Maybe some more owners will chime in, hopefully with positives. :)

Me 3. No problem so far.
Could speed be a factor? I have yet gone beyond 150km/h ....

Well, I've decided to just return the Acura OEM air deflector and buy the Weather Tech one based on the pics and info provided by phins2rt.

I can see other folks have had luck with the Acura version but for $75 with shipping, I'll give the Weather Tech version a shot and put $175 in my pocket.

Thanks to all!

I've got the WeatherTech deflector, and had it up to 80 mph with no apparent noise. Also fits really well and installs easily. :D

I got my OEM deflector for $138.75 and installed it myself. The Weather Tech one is less for sure, but you're not saving anywhere close to $175.

OEM here too. Installed it myself. Not a whistle at all, and I've had my MDX pretty fast...

I paid $231 with install with delivery of the new vehicle. Plus Tax = $250.92

Weather Tech with tax & shipping was $77.95

Variance = $172.97

Close enough to $175 for me!

Ah, I see, the savings were in your personal situation. Since you're comparing a self-installed item to a dealer installed item, others should know that the OEM one would be MUCH less if self-installed (over $100 less). So, the savings aren't generally $175, but closer to $75.

Agreed...

I could have installed myself and probably would never have had the whistle but I figured I'd just have the dealer add it at the time of the vehicle delivery. They were already putting on BSM, sport running boards, door edge guards and roof rails.

I get the Weather Tech version delivered today. I'll get it put on this weekend and let everyone no how it works out.

Thanks again to all for the input.
