HELP!AC/Heater Fan runs on maximam, won't stop or slow down - Click HERE for Original Thread

Fairly long strory.

Two weeks ago I noticed that if the AC fan goes anywhere other than the lowest level, it will make a humming noise, the AC fan runs faster, the noise goes louder.

After digged in this site, I found I might need clean/replace the blower motor.

Today I successfully took the front blower motor out, found there are three dried leaves in side the blower fan area. Removed. Before I install the blower motor back, I started the car and AC, everything works fine, I can stop the AC and the fan, as well as control the FAN blowing level from the lowest to highest.

When I installed the blower motor, I made a mistake, the motor was twisted 120 degree. When I start the car and the AC, some sharp sound heard, I stopped the car right away, then found the mistake I made. I then installed the blower motor properly this time. I didn't test it though.

And here comes the problem. When I start the car, the blower motor starts running on the highest level, keep blowing strong. I tried to turn off the AC, reduce the fan speed....it simply keeps running this way until you turn off the car or unplug the pwoer of the FAN.

HELP!!!!!

Is the motor broken or the motor transistor or anything else??!!
I know if the transistor broken the fan will stop working but I do not know what cause the fan keep running at hight speed...

othe than this, the AC works just fine: blowing cold air, rear AC/fan works normal.

Thanks for all replies in advance......

self update:

I removed the transistor, open it up and looks like there is nothing wrong with it, no smell, no burning, no nothing, I then have it installed back.

I would like to test the motor but do not know how, and obviously it is working at least at high speed.

Note when I adjust the fan level, the rear AC response properly, so I assume there is nothing wrong with the centrol control unit...

If I won't get any reply by tomorrow, I will get a used blower motor from my local junk yard, see if the problem get solved.

Try searching (although it is harder now with a 5 letter minimum) on high speed fan (or maybe high* speed fan*) and see if you get any hits. I vaguely recall someone else having similar issues with the fan staying on at high speed. Good luck.

The setup for the search sucks...I simply do not understand why I can not search a shorter world such as 'fan' or something like this...

However I did found a post regarding rear AC fan at high speed (used 'blower' as the keyword) and looks like someone pointed the transistor......no conclusion for that thread though.

As I stated before, I did visdually checked the transistor and found nothing wrong. Anyone knows how to test it??Thanks

BTW, I ordered a tested blower motor and it is on the way. Will try it anyway when I received it.

There's a resistor in the passenger side footwell I believe, that adjusts the fan speed setting. Without this resistor it just runs on high. My bet would be that the resistor is shot. It's a relatively inexpensive plug-in module.

Update as May 23 3PM central time:

I received the blower motor that I ordered the night before yesterday.

I connected it to the car, and this motor runs at high speed just as well as the original one. So it is not the blower motor.

I will remove the transistor once again, open it up to check it I can fix it.

BTW, about the blower motor:

I called my local dealer, and they quoted $366 for a blower motor replacement. However, I located bunch of blower motors from either www.ebay.com or www.car-part.com. Those are basically from junk yard, and they were originally equiped on MDX or 98-02 accord.
The one I got cost me $25+$10 S/H. So if you do not mind use used part, the same job cost you $35, about 10% of the deal wants.Brand new parts from www.rockauto.com costs you about $60+s/H.

I will come back to update if the problem get fixed (hopfully) after I fix(I hope I can) the transistor.

Found a thread from a CR-V forum, which apply to this case:

http://www.hondasuv.com/members/sho...?t=24831&page=3

Brief summary:

blower not working at all, check thermal protector:

http://www.mouser.com/catalog/630/462.pdf

http://www.mouser.com/catalog/specsheets/tco.pdf
cost: $0.40 + S/H$6.00

blower run at high speed, most likely the transistor is short.
The model of the transistor:
K2313

http://www.ortodoxism.ro/datasheets/toshiba/2970.pdf

NTE equivalent p/n 2920 (price: $14)

How to test the power transistor:

To test the power transistor, remove the connector from the power transistor and check that the resistance between terminals 3 and 4 on the power transistor is about 1.4 - 1.5 K ohms. If not then power transistoris bad. If resistance is good then you need to remove terminal 1 wire (blu/yel) from the connector and wrap the terminal with tape to insulate it. Removing the wire is a little tricky. You need to open up the "pin lock"section of the connector body and move it out of the body.
then from the front of the connector, you need to use a very small screwdriver to push the small plastic locking tab away from the metal pin, and then you can pull the wire/pin out from the rear. the locking tab is very thin, kindof hard to see, but it works somewhat like the locking tab on a cable tie. Now reconnect the connector (with terminal wire 1 now removed) back onto the power transistor. Using a jumper wire connect 12v + to the terminal in the #1 hole in the connector where you removed the wire. (you can get 12v from the blu/wht wire on the blower motor when the key is on. Turn on the ignition. If the blower now runs then the power transistor is good. If not then the power transistor may be bad and needs replacement. If the blower motor is running, then your problem is at the ac control unit, or in the wiring to it, and we need to dig further.

I haven't run this test but I will do and further buy the transistor to try my luck. Will keep this echo thread updated.

problem solved!
*****************************************************

In brief, the problem has beem solved after I replaced the transistor of the resistor.

So here is the sumary migth help someone who has AC blower related problem:

***************problem 1:

phenomenon:
AC making humming noise, especially fan runs at high speed. Noise is from somwhere behind the glove box

Problem:
there might be some leaves or something else in the blower fan net

solution:
remove/clean the blower motor

How:
See this:
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/atta...=&postid=400552

***************problem 2:

phenomenon:
AC looks working but no wind blow out, blower is not working at all

Problem:
** 1. blower motor might broken
** 2. blower motor resistor thermal fuse burnt

solution:
for 1: remove/reinstall the blower motor ($380 job @ accura dealer). Yuo can get used blower motor around $30-60(same parts on 98-02 honda accords) from junk yard, ebay, www.car-part.com, or new one (might not be OEM) at $80 from website parts provider such as rockauto.com.

for 2:
see this great thread:
See this:
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=29595
You may get the parts at www.mouser.com, sot you $0.40+$7 S/h

***************problem 3:

phenomenon:
AC FAN runs at highspeed no matter the AC is on or off

Problem:
blower motor resistor, the power transistor is short

solution:
see the thread above to locate and remove the blower motor resistor

1. new assembly available from dealer at $200 or so, cost you $100 at rockauto.com

2. buy the nte2920 power transistor, a soilder and DIY. Cost $14+S/H.
Link:
http://www.nteinc.com/specs/2900to2999/pdf/nte2920.pdf
and the part can be found at www.mouser.com
*** this is what happened to my X and I have already got it fixed.

****************************************************
thanks for all replies to help me to track done the problem!Hope this sumary cna help someone in future.

I have a used MDX blower motor left over, it has bee tested. If some one want it, email me: mx6chicago@yahoo.com. $30 I will have it shipped to you.
Thanks,
