downshifting while coasting? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I test drove the '08 mdx yesterday. As I was pulling up to the light, I released my foot off the gas. While coasting (at 10mph or so), I felt an abrupt "shifting", as if the car was slowing down on its own without me pushing on the brake. Shouldn't the car just coast? I said to the dealer sitting next to me, "did u feel that?", he of course said he didn't feel anything. It happened a few times. I've noticed that others have mentioned this in discussions on carespace.com. Is this a common "feature" of the mdx '08? I'm nervous to buy this car after reading about transmissions issues. Any thoughts? Thanks.

This is not a "feature" of the MDX or any other vehicle. It is just the was that the transmission of any vehicle that I have ever owned operates.

The MDX has a very smart electronically controlled transmission. If you are slowing down, or descending a hill and braking, it will downshift. You probably felt the 2 to 1 downshift, which is kind of serious. I don't feel any of hte others.
The MDX is the only car I'm aware of that will downshift in cruise control to hold your speed going down a hill. It also has "grade logic control: which holds one gear going up or down a hill, to prevent down, up down up shifting.
If you;re nervous about buying a new MDX because the old MDX;s had a higher fail rate for transnmissions, buy a nice Ford,

Shootist, he was not asking about the acions while in cruise control._ He was coasting to a_ stop at a light.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I was simply asking about this abrupt downshift that I felt as I was coasting before I stopped for a light. But I went to a different dealer today (outside of the city) and could not replicate it. I guess i'm just used to a Nissan Xterra 2002 ... very simple transmission? And not these more modern transmissions? Just a guess. Thanks for the help. BTW, here is the post on carspace.com that someone posted in 2005 that sounded very similar to what I noticed yesterday when I tested the 2008 MDX:

"question - when i take my foot off the accelerator, say to coast up to a light, I feel a noticable drag from the transmission (in D5)........quite a bit different from our other cars, an Expediton and an Avalon..........is this normal? "

I just bought a 2006 Black/Saddle/Ebony Touring and noticed the same behavior. It is obviously downshifting. First I thought it was just air drag as the MDX cuts a big slice through the wind at highway speeds. But I have also noticed it at slower speeds (30mph) where drag would not be such a strong factor. Anyone have any comments?

Btw, it is a nice truck all around. First impressions are that the interior is not as meticulously built with quality trim as my 2001.5 VW Passat. It also does not feel as structurally tight or rattle free. But the seats are far nicer, the ride is quieter, and no doubt the MDX will statistically have better long-term reliability. The MDX/Honda Pilot are the best compromises as family SUV's.

They are just asking a question - no need to be so witty and turn off a potentially value asset from the boards.

I was noticing the other day that my wife's '01 , the tranny downshifts alot more on hills while coasting more than I would prefer. This saps gas mileage.

That said, if you look for problems , you will likely find someone that has a probelm with just about anything - the content folks dont post as much. Yes MDX had hideous tranny problems - but Acura has met the challenge and replaced those trannys for free even after the warranty period expired.

Acura has not replaced all the trannys for free, in some cases they shared the cost of the replacement and in others they flat out refused.
