The past 2 weeks a stinky smell has been coming out of the a/c vents while running the a/c. It actually smells like cat piss! The car sits in the garage so I know it's not actually cat piss. While driving the a/c will have this smell appear. It goes away after about 15 minutes. Sometimes it's there once I start and other times it comes while driving a while.
I had a Honda Civic with a similar smell, it smelled more like rotten eggs. The dealer said this was normal with Honda's since the evaporator or condensor, I forget, sits inside the car behind the dashboard. After driving a while the evaporator or condensor will sweat and molds up abit by the time you drive again. The solution and it worked was to run the a/c with recirculating mode for about 10 minutes befor eyou turned off the car. This blew air over the evaporator or condensor and dried up the sweat.
I have never had this problem with the MDX before. The a/c is always on auto mode which is recirc mode. Any ideas out there as to what may be causing this smell? Cats are not the issue.
By the way if you have a stinky Honda a/c system, your answer is above : ) |

Condensation might be building up because the drain holes are plugged with debris/leaves.
Did you notice if water was still dripping under the right front area (Right firewall area)?
Once it started to get moldy, you get the smell.
There is commercial mold killer that can be purchase to get rid of the mold and smell once you have corrected the problem. It comes in a can with a tube that you feed in the heater intake area and while the fan is running, spray the stuff in.
I have notice the same problem with mine (2007) with less then 5,000 miles.

| ^^^ I agree. Is water dripping from the wheel well? Also try running the blower without the A/C before you shutdown the car. Also try fresh air mode. |

You may also have a mouse, or dead mouse, problem. Mice love to nest in AC blowers. If you have a nest, you have mouse pee.
If it's a dead mouse, the smell will change. It's unmistakable, and amazingly strong for such a little creature.
Search the forum- several posters have had this problem. |

| if you park in a garage, look for mouse droppings etc......if you see them, buy a "rat zapper". Have you ever changed the AC filters behind the glove box? If not, I'd recommend you do that as well and while you are there, look for a mouse nest in the ac motor housing unit.....I've attached a picture of my RL's AC allergin filter. BTW Wurth is what you want to spray into the ac unit behind the glove box where the filters are located and spray the entire can. Read the instructions. This is what the dealerships use if you can convience them to do it right. Most try the half ass route and just spray into the vents WHICH IS NOT THE CORRECT WAY TO DO THIS JOB!!!! |

I am having the same problem. Where do I look by the fender if its clogged? Is there a visible area to check to see if the drain holes are clogged? Also do I just spray the cleaner on the intake side of the cabin filter and run the fans so it circulates? Please help.
Thanks |

| On the "can" of Wurth are instructions to proceed with the process.....It is BEST to spray it directly into the ac fan motor after you have removed your glove box to mention a few. Roll all windows down with AC on Max with recurr mode for like 10 minutes.......of course with engine running! It kills everything in its path the correct way. Spraying it in the vents is the "ass backwards stealership route"......and they can get away with it most of the time. It has a very refreshing, clean lemon scent!!:trustme: :1: :1: |

I will check. If not where should I be looking for as far as the drain is concern? I read right fenderwell area. Do i need to take the fender cover to get a better look or jack the truck?
Thanks |

its called "condensation". Same if you were to leave a glass of ice water in the sun. Condensation would appear on the outside of the glass, same as drip from the bottom of your MDX. No need to remove fender wells etc...
Look underneath the right mid front of the vehicle..... |

I can try running mine tomorrow and investigate it. I never really looked for the drain tube, but it should be easy to find.

Not sure if its possible to access from the inside. By looking at the picture, you should be able to do it by removing the cabin filter. With my old accord I was able to pull the hose from the inside and it was clogged with a bunch of leafs bits. I'll let ya know. |
