Hi, I just bought a 2003 MDX touring w/ nav., dvd, etc. Everytime I start the car there is a noise after I turn the key. I don't know if it's the starter or what. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Also, how much is it to get it fixed? Thanks.

You really need to be more specific, noise from WHERE, engine, transmission, HVAC,Sound system, Brakes, etc, etc, etc. Best bet have some one turn it on while you check.

Could be the sound of the engine starting.

Seriously, if you can't describe the problem better than that then no one can help you.

I think that it is the clink of all of those dollars dropping into the ARAB oil wells.

I have no idea how to describe it. It doesn't sound normal though. It sounds like I am keeping the key turned. It is not the HVAC. My Dad tried to look at it while I started the car and couldn't pinpoint it. He said it may be something on the starter but he was unsure. It just stinks because I don't have a warranty and I haven't even had my car a week. I hope I didn't make a mistake!

Its going to be hard to diagnose over the internet. It could be the starter. You'll just have to take it in and let them find the issue. By the way, welcome to the forum!

Sounds like your classic starter-goin-bad! I'd put money on that. It shouldn't quit on you anytime soon, but I wouldn't procrastinate on replacing it either. Just my 2 cts.

Since we have no option but to speculate I'll toss in my two cents as well.

If the starter is sticking (not disengaging) then you will be hearing a grinding type of noise until it releases. The grinding is the teeth on the starter turning slower than the teeth on the flywheel. The risk in waiting to fix it is that you could end up chipping a tooth of the flywheel That would then become a very expensive fix.

If you just bought the vehicle a week ago then take it back to the dealer...normally you have a 30 day warranty. If you bought it privately then contact the person you bought it from and ask for compensation towards a fix.

You are kidding certainly? I consider myself pretty straight forward and honest and I would not even consider "compensating" a person who bought a vehicle in a private sale from me. If I had on known there was a problem it either would have been fixed before sale or the buyer would have been informed.

I do not care how long after the sale that a new problem turns up. No private seller should be held responsible for problems that were not known at the time of sale.

Does it sound like a streaking sound? Does it happen all the time, engine hot and cold? It is the starter. The oil in it is dry and needs to be replaced. My mechanic quoted me $400. My 04 MDX only happens when it is cold. He said I have time to replace it.
