engine stalls after raced to 5,500 rpm - Click HERE for Original Thread

Wife is complaining sometimes it takes a few tries to start our 02 X with 60k miles. I went into garage but can not duplicate the problem.

I raced the engine to 5,500 rpm (feels jerky at around 5,500 rpm), let go of gas then engine dies.

Anyone knows what is wrong? Can someone with an 02 to try to race the engine to 5,500 rpm, let go of gas, engine dies?

From your wifes description, maybe you need a new starter. What octane gas are you using? How old are you spark plugs? Any check engine light?

You are revving the car in park? or driving up to 5500rpm? If in park, i think that might be a rev limiter or fuel cutoff.

+1, and it's not a good idea to race the engine in park to 5500rpm!

I have an 02 but you won't catch me revving it to 5500 RPM in Neutral or Park with No Load. What is the point of asking anyone to do that kind of test?
Starting problems have no relationship to revving an engine under a No Load condition. Perhaps you can provide more details related to the actual 'several tries to start' problem which you yourself can't seem to duplicate.

Starter is fine, it cranked. Battery is 1-1/2 years old. It has 60k miles and original plugs. I usually use octane 89 gas and a bottle of Chevron Techroline (sp?) once in a while.

I did raced the engine to 5,500 rpm in park. As soon as I get off the gas, engine rpm will drop all the way down to 0. 5,500 rpm is not red line yet so I don't think it has anything to do with fuel cut off.

There is no check engine light on the dash.

If you continue to rev your engine that high with No Load you will damage it. Do you actually have a problem when you don't rev it like you are doing. I suggest you stop doing that and deal with your first problem.
You indicated your wife is having a starting problem which you can't duplicate. So what is the problem? Does the engine turn over when she turns the key? If so, is it just not firing until she tries several times? Are there any other sounds or noises?

I really did not know race to 5,500 rpm without load will damage the engine.

She only mentioned she saw some light in the dash blinked but did not get a good look at which ones. This was when the car started OK.

She did not notice any dash light when she had to crank a few times.

All I can suggest is that next time she uses the vehicle go out with her and take note of what she is doing, observe the warning lights when she turns the key to on, after she turns the key to start and after it starts. Use your eyes and ears and then report what you find. From what you have said I have no idea what your problem is or if you even have one.

If a light is blinking for several seconds after it starts, it's probably the maintenance required light in it's initial stages of warning. This is described in the owners manual. After a more miles the service engine light will remain on until you get the oil changed and have the light reset.

When there is no load, 5500rpm might be a fuel cutoff. I say get the starter/battery checked out anyway. Revving might of been ok with premium fuel but with 89, that might of not been wise. Hopefully it wasnt detonation.
