Chicago just increased its sales tax to 10.25

The city of Chicago has the highest total sales tax of all major U.S. cities. It is also one of the most complex. 10.25% is levied on all non-perishable goods purchased, while 2% is levied on grocery items, drugs, and medical appliances. There is an additional 1% tax, the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) "Food and Beverage Tax", on food and beverage purchases in the downtown area (These "downtown" boundaries are: Surf Street on the north, Ashland Avenue on the west, Stevenson Expressway (I-55) on the south, & Lake Michigan on the east. Furthermore, O'Hare and Midway airports also fall under the 1% MPEA tax district). Car rentals in the city are taxed at 20%. Hotel rooms are taxed at 15.4%. Soft drinks (packs, cases, or individual bottles) are taxed at 13.25%.

In October 2007, a 10 cent per-bottle tax was proposed for bottled water as a potential source of additional revenue to help balance government budget deficits. The proposal was recently reduced to only a 5 cent per-bottle tax. Also, new alcohol tax increases in Chicago are being debated, such as a 7 cent tax increase on six-pack of beer, a 6 cent increase on a bottle of wine depending on alcohol content, and 22 cents on a liter of spirits.

Just what else would you expect of a democrat named Daley?

Well, here in the lovely city of Montgomery, Alabama we have been burdened with a 10% city sales tax for the past 3 years or so. Nobody knows where it goes since there haven't really been any noticeable improvements, except maybe in the interior decorations of politicians's houses.

Is the city tax 10% by itself? Or does the city add to the state and county tax to make it a total of 10%.

It's the total tax. One of the highest in the nation, but I guess now we've been trumped by Chicago. Local residents (inlcuding me) often sneak off outside city limits to buy stuff because of the sales price difference. For example, if I buy $500 worth of odds and ends at a Home Depot or Walmart not even 15 miles away (already outside the city limits), with sales tax at 6.5%, I can save $17.50 but with today's gas prices, the actual savings narrows. But it's still worth it for high-ticket items like plasma TV's and appliances.

Maybe the money is going to I-65 improvements. I go through there on the way to FL and I-65 has been under construction through Montgomery at least the last 5 yrs, and based on what I saw in May, there is no end in sight.:) I need to get back down there and play the RTJ trail in Prattville and Auburn again....great courses.

After hearing the comments about rates I don't feel so bad with our 9.75% rate in most of TN. Our sales tax rate is high but we don't have an income tax.

Someone may want to tell your politicians that there is another way to balance the budget, don't waste so much money.

Gee, I wonder how Obama will raise taxes to pay for all the crap he wants to implement...

Ahhhh...our democrat friends have never met a tax they did not like. Gmc74, didn't you hear?! Obama will pay for all his proposed programs with the increase of cap gains tax to 25% as well as the increases on the taxes of those making 250K or more. You surely must know that between the"rich" and oil companies, he can not only pay for all of his programs but probably pay restitution to the African Americans and heck, even pay all of Africa for the injustices of the european colonialists.

Wow... and I though 8.75% in Alameda County in CA was the highest.

I guess not :)

I assume the parts at the end are in jest... but yeah, there haven't been too many democrats that didn't want to raise taxes on the rich.

I am all for paying my fair share, percentage wise, but the message needs to be sent to congress (since they really carry the burden when it comes to deciding on spending) that we will not accept pork, period!

Every president, good and bad, has their pet projects that they are going to fund. For Bush it was being a war monger, and for Obama it will be creating a socialist state...
