I bought a new shift knob for my MDX. Can anyone tell me how to remove the factory knob?
rvehock
Unscrew it, counterclockwise.
TheWorm
Yep -- what rvehock said...

FYI it's usually on pretty tight -- you might want to use something for extra grip, like one of those rubber jar openers or a glove.

There are a couple of [older] threads on this already (use the search and they'll pop up):

While we're on the subject and since most of us have been "short shafted" here's the fix I did several months ago. Naturally, its a HD fix. :D

If you're interested in duplicating this, the size is 1-1/16 x 13/16 x 1/8 #16 O-Ring. You'll find it in one of HD's plastic bins, near plumbing, I think.

DMor,

Thanks for the pix! Do you give lessons? I would love if my wife was as into the 'X as you are! ;)

I'm going to order one of these from our buddy Tim--has he (you, if you're reading this Tim) offered a group discount on any of the wood items? I may have to suggest that...

Tim offered a discount on the shift knob a few months ago. If I remember right, it was about $8 off. However, by the time I phoned New York and blabbed to Tim for about 20 minutes, my LD charge was about $8. So go figure. But Tim's fun to talk to...no matter what the savings. Just try to order more than ONE thing so you get more Mile$ Per Call! :D:D

DMor:

I noticed you were able to take apart your burlwood shift knob. I have replaced my stock shift knob with a "type S" shift knob. The leather pattern is similar, with a nice acrylic S-Type logo on the top. Anyways, the replacement knob came with a nubbin for the lower chrome portion (similar to your burlwood chrome portion). My question to you is: can I replace the nice ling chrome peice from the original shift knob onto the replacement knob?
DMor
Hi FengMD!

Doubtful...The original black Acura shaft snaps on/off and the Acura burlwood shaft screws on/off. I suspect your new shift knob also has a screw on/off shaft. I tried to doctor mine, but even HDepot couldn't save me this time! :)

Marne, Thanks for passing Tim's toll free number! :)
