Dashboard sinking? - Click HERE for Original Thread

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my dashboard is lower on the left side near the A-pillar than it is on the right. I pointed it out to my service manager yesterday when I was in for my 7500-mile service. He said he'd never seen this problem before and had the technicians investigate. After about 45 minutes he came back and told me that the techs feel that the dash is warped and replacing it should fix the problem.

Has anybody had their entire dashboard replaced?

I've only had it since April and I'd hate to open up the possibility for some new rattles. The 2nd row seats have finally stopped squeaking and my MDX is pretty darn quiet these days.

That does not sound good. I don't blame you for not wanting to replace your whole dash board. I wouldn't want to do that either. They would have to mess with too many things by doing that. And to answer your question is "NO" I have never heard of this kind of thing before. That's unbelievable. Please keep us updated on what happens.

Good luck,

How much lower is it? Mine's even -- I can just see the seam from the A-pillar trim on both sides...

Removing and replacing the entire dash is probably, as you surmise, begging for squeaks and rattles. Of course, now that you know you have a problem, it'll no doubt drive you nuts.

DMor always raises concerns for dash rattles after dash work, though I can't recall anyone here having their MDX dash removed or replaced...

I personally would probably do it (cuz the uneven dash would drive me nuts) but would go in with the expectation that I might be making a return trip or two to fix any resultant rattles.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to have dash work done on MY car, but let's keep things in perspective: They had to install the dash at some point when they built the car! So let's not scare the poor fellow to death. IF the dash needs to be replaced, and IF the work is done by a qualified technician, then there shouldn't necessarily be a higher probability of rattles/problems than when installed at the factory.

(For those preparing the counter argument that reads "well, the guy in the factory is installing a hundred a day so he's gotta be good at it" surely hope that they didn't buy one that he worked on during his first day on the job ;) )

The FIRST DAY? Nope...sounds like brobison already found him! (Sorry, but I couldn't resist.) My concern for dash removal stems from another car and the persistent rattles after dash replacement. Sometimes they don't show up for a few months, depending on road/pothole conditions. However, Brobison could get lucky and all might be well. On the other note, all is under warranty so you can always keep returning if necessary. My Acura dash has a slight defect around the Nav trim where someone must've pulled it pre delivery. They said they'd replace my entire dashboard...then grimaced. THEY grimaced. :) I'm due for the first service and will rehash the concept...or preferable patch/fix at that time.

When I bought my TBird after 2 weeks there was a material separtion in the dash so the dealer said No Problem we will replace it. Let me say. Unless it is so bad that it brings the value of the car down dont do it!!!! After replacing the dash the wiring was all messy, the center console didnt align anymore, they broke the molding fixing the latter and after pulling out the climate contorl for the third time they broke that too. You will also get these little squeeks that you never had before. Look for the little scrathes that will end up on pillers and steering column. Other than that need I say more.

Sounds like we have the same service guy. He grimaced as well when he told me the dash would have to be replaced. As for noticing it, I see it every time I get behind the wheel. It looks to be about an 1/16-1/8" lower on the driver's side than on the passenger's side. I'll try to get a picture of it to post sometime this week.

You guys are right. It is starting to drive me crazy, but I think dash rattles would be a lot worse.

Thanks for all the help and I'll keep you posted.

For 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch, I would not have it replaced. The colateral risk of rattle far outweight the benefit. If it sinks further (I emphasize the "sinking" aspect, then there may be another problem with the vehicle, then I would ask for replacement. If it is just a misalignment during assembly or just a little warp in the dash top material, then I would live with it since I am afraid the "cosmetic" remedy may result in much worse "rattles or sqeaks". Just my opinion.

I have exactly the same problem. The drivers side is a little lower. There is also a bump on the dash next to the instrumentation panel. I'l post a pict ASAP.

Developed a creaking/rubbing sound from the passenger side where the dash meets the console at 9500 miles. The sound comes and goes but does not seem to be road surface or speed related. No sinking or deformaties noticed in dashboard.

Has anyone else experienced this and what was done about it?

Few members have the rattle/squeaks from the glove box compartment. Check it out.

I've got it too, but it actually seems to me that the A-pillar cover/trim is just not long enough.
