Help with creakling/grinding noise - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi,

I have an '02 with 117k kilometers (73k miles) on it.

Starting last week, when I go above 70 km/hr (about 45mph), everytime when I step on the gas pedal or let off the gas pedal, a noise best described as a creaking/grinding sound seems to come from the driverside engine compartment. The sound only lasts for 2 - 3 seconds.

This seems to only happen between 70km/hr and 85km/hr. Perhaps the road noise obscures the sound at higher speeds?

At first, I thought it was the brakes being worn down and needs to be replaced. But I have discounted this as I can't see why the sound wouldn't come on all the time.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I'm hoping this doesn't have anything to do with the engine or the tranny.

Could be anything. Suspension, motor mounts. Those noises are hard to pinpoint.

Yeah I was hearing the same unsettling noise awhile back. Did you recently have your wheels off the car for any reason? At the time I had some work done (wheels were taken off).

I was hearing it at around 80mph. A whistling/humming sound coming from the driver's side wheelwell. I brought it back to the shop, they determined the dust brake cover (?) or something or other was bent slightly. They bent it back to where it was supposed to be. Problem solved.

I had it parked inside the garage for one week while on vacation and noticed the noise afterwards...

Looks like I'll have to take it into the shop :(

Have you tried revving the motor a little or pushing down on the suspension parts to see if u hear some noise?
oakvilleguy
Thanks for your suggestions.

Tried jumping up an down on the step rails and no noise. Tried revving the engine while in the driveway and no noise. Only seems to happen when moving.
midnightMDX
Thats really odd. Maybe you should have someone drive next to you and see if they can hear it. Maybe its time to bring it to a shop.
oakvilleguy
Yes it is time to take it to a shop as a couple of others who've sat in the car also hear it.

If it's vehicle speed related, could possibly be transmission. You did mention the noise is coming from left engine bay. That's where the transmission is located. A special tool called a " chassis ear" can be used to locate any type of noise in the engine bay area.

If it's RPM related, you can try to locate noise with hood up, engine running in PARK. Use a stethoscope to locate noise and raise RPM .

I have a 05 MDX, and am experiencing a sound I can't really explain. It sounds like strong wind gusts under the hood, when the speed reaches anywhere 30 to 40 mph. Also, when the accelerator pedal is released and gently pressed again between 30 and 40 mph. Other then that sound, the car rides pretty smoothly.
I have read alot of similar messages, but the sound is described in many different ways. It doen't feel like a trasmission problem. But I'm puzzled to what is causing the sound.

Can anyone help please?
midnightMDX
If you rev it in park, do you hear the same noise? Its hard to diagnose that. I suggest you take it in to a shop.

Hey, I found this was a tourque converter issue from a previous post. Let me know how you make out.

Hey Alexich,

Theres some info on your issue in the Acura Tech pubs.

"A bad propeller shaft center support bearing will produce a hissing sound between 30-50 MPH. A bad bearing is often mistaken for wind noise.

Tell your dealer to reference tech pub 050049 dated april '05.

Good Luck!

Oakvilleguy,

Check this thread: http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=31071

I had a similar noise show up after running over an unknown object in a downpour. It may not be the same but it is easy to check by looking at the driveshaft.

Thanks ArtW

I'll check it out.

I took my Acura to a local dealer. The mechanic discovered that the transmission fluid has been topped off while the car was hot (which should only be done on cold engine, otherwise you'll overfill it) and whoever did it, used a wrong type of ATF. I have just purchased the car, so I didn't know who did what to it. Ever since the transmission was flushed and filled with the right type of fluid, all the grinding and funny noises have disapeared. Now if that wasn't done, it could have damaged my transmission and/or torque converter. It really does help to have a professional look at your car, when you're experiensing something like this.
Thanks to everyone for your help. Good luck with yours.

??
Trans fluid level should be checked when the engine is at normal operating temperature.

Hope the correct fluid helps you out.Did they actually flush the system or drain and refill?
alexich
They have flushed it 2 times, and said that no damage has been done. But if we haven't caught it in time, it would be bad. Because it wasn't just too much fluid, but also wrong fluid.
