hi.
i own an acura mdx 2005 with 35k miles on it. While driving in town with 30-40 mph, the computer indicates almost 13 mpg fuel economy. Is this normal?
thanks

| Sounds about right, especially if the A/C is on. I live on what would be a ski slope if it ever snowed here. I get pretty low miles when I'm just going to work and back. Sometimes average as little as 15-16 for a tank. If I do any highway driving though, I get in the 20 range. I shut off the A/C whenever sensible. |

| 13 seems low. Maybe you've got a lot of unnecessary weight in the car. |

| How's your tire pressure? |

| Depends on what your version of "in-town" is and your driving style. Are your tires properly inflated? Is the A/c on? Any problems with hesitation in the motor? |

Thanks.
My daughter (10 yrs old) rides with me on the car and that's it. No stuff loaded at all. I wonder if the engine has some problems? Not sure if I should bring it to the dealership or not... |

Very true! All dependent upon your foot and how many stop lights per mile.
Also do not trust the computer unless you have calibrated it over several tanks of gas.

normal ? The correct answer is really 'it depends'. The worst I have managed to get is 15mpg. BUT there are so many variables at play here.
Driving Style
Tire Pressure
General Maintenance (air filter, fuel system condition, driveline fluids i.e. atf, vtm)
Fuel Octane/Quality |

How do you 'calibrate' the mpg gauge ? |

Not sure what he means. But I usually reset my mpg meter every time I fill up. When I manually calculate the mpg, its pretty dead on. |

You "calibrate" the gauge by manually calculating the gas mileage and comparing it to the computer generated data. You have to do this over sever tanks full to eliminate/minimize the differences in how full you fill the tank at each fillup.

| I wish it wasn't. I drive about 4 miles each way to work with numerous stop lights - I average 12 to 13 mpg pretty much all the time. The only time i get better mileage than that is when I travel on the highway. It really sucks, but not enough to get rid of it. |
