2001 today or a 2002 in February- What would you do?........... - Click HERE for Original Thread

A friend of mine can get his hands on a Touring model today (customer backed out at last minute) or wait until February for a 2002 for $1,000 Cdn more. The dealer, of course, wants full MSRP, even though it's a 2001.

I told my friend to wait for the '02 model. Besides the new "fixes" that are likely on the newer model, the extra depreciation on the '01 model will more than compensate for the extra $1,000 and 4 months of waiting.

Unfortunately, like the rest of the world, my friend wants his MDX NOW. What would you do?

BTW, a '02 Touring is $31,850 US with destination fee here in Canada. Do we really get X's for ~$5,500 US less than in the US?

I had the choice of a 2001 or waiting 2 months for an 02. I chose the 2001 because I was happy with the color I had, improvements were not dramatic and I wanted my car for the fall. Many will say to wait but if we are talking 4 more months, I would go for it. If you wait until Feb or March, you may be tempted to wait for a 2003 or the Honda MDX.

Same scenario here... Unless dealers are pricing the 2001s way below MSRP, I'd wait for the 2002s. Again, like A2 said if you want/need it now then get it. With my Durango not expiring (lease) 'till Mar, I'm waiting for the 2002's. My .02...

The differences between the 01 and 02 are minor. However, if you feel that you need these improvements, you are better waiting. You do not want to pay $40K and still be nagging about it for the next 5-7 years. If I could afford to wait, I will get the 02. In my case, the lease on my car expires end of December, so I could afford to wait and did want the refinements... Also, liked the RRP color.

You may want your friend to check out the noise level in 2001 to see if it is acceptable. To me, that is my biggest concern and rather wait for 2002 model.

wait.

Boy this one is strictly a personal issue. For me 4 months is a long time to wait for not any real changes. I struggled over waiting 4 months back in late June and could not wait. I am not sorry and have had the enjoyment of driving the X all this time.

Chuck,
What is your friend currently driving? A 4WD/AWD. If not accelerating the MDX purchase would be nice. If he plans to keep it for 6 years or so, the depreciation is not an issue, only the additional colors might be worth the wait.

If it were me, I would get a 2002. It would be it's second year for the MDX's and some of the problems are fixed and they have a few more colors. Unless you wanted the dark green you would have to get a 2001, because it's discontinued for 2002.

I waited for 3 months for my 2001 MDX, I think it's worth waiting for a 2002 MDX.

Just my opinion.

Tell your friend about this wonderful site. Wait will be much easier:)

I was recently in the same situation. I decided to take '01 MDX.

The changes are not significant enough on '02, and depreciation is not an issue for me since I plan on keeping my MDX for 7-10 years. Besides, I got tired of waiting for 8+ months (since January 2001), so when I found the right trim/color at the end of September, 2001 at MSRP with no forced options it did not make any sense for me to wait for '02.

In addition, 2001 MDX can now be negotiated at MSRP while the asking price for 2002 (at least that's what many California dealers want) is MSRP + $2,000 to $4,000 dealer markup and/or "forced" accessories (in addition to increased MSRP).

Bottom line, it is a personal decision that depends on your cicumstances (and your level of remaining patience).

Good luck.

Last friday I was given the choice of driving off the lot with a 2001 or waiting for the 2002 (maybe december).

I chose to wait. This way I can specify which mandatory overpriced accessories I would get and I have always found that the second year of production has better features and is better built than the first year (82 Accord LX & 90 Integra GS). The 01 is also an "old" model so there is no reason to buy it unless it is deeply discounted. In Torrance, there are no discounts.

I've been wanting to get an MDX since the beginning of the year and would have bought an 01 but it was not available when I really needed it. I can live without one for a couple of more months. For me it's a nice to have rather than a need to have but the choice really depends upon your circumstances.

Grab the '01, there will never be another MDX like it. You get the '02, they'll have fixed all the stuff and you won't have anything to talk about.

LMAO Ghost !!!

He always writes a stupid post right when im taking a drink of my soda. :p

I would wait for the 02 ... The minor changes would be worth it to me. Heck, I'd be happy to get a virgin engine, trammie, and drivetrain. The thicker windshield without the kazoo .. ah Nevermind .. Go ahead and buy the 01's in Canada, it will help take you to the hockey games. Ya think there will be a canadian team that makes the playoffs this year?

Wait for 2002.

It all depends on WHEN do you actually need the car. Then, next is the availability issue and the "iffy" possibility of discount (or no forced options).

wait if you can............but if you decide to buy, I don't think it's a mistake.

I was going to wait for an '02 but took the '01 because I didn't want to wait 4 more months. I also got a terrific deal.
I also think most of the early problems have been resolved on the late production '01s. I just drove my 3 day old '01 240 miles today and had no wind noise and nothing else wrong that I noticed yet.

Either way - you'll get a great vehicle.
federico
texrb,

Could you talk about what kind of deal you got?
I'd like to know what we can negotiate for when getting a new 2001 (as opposed as a new 2002).

Thanks,

HI Chuck;
I think you gave him good advice. I know 4 months seems like a long time, but the 2002 will be worth more much than $1000 2 or 3 years from now. Plus having the upgrades and being able to order what you want. Also I would check with other dealers about the wait time.
He would have to come off of his MSRP before I would even think about it.

But it's your call . Good luck what ever you decide..Big Al

federico - I posted the details on the dealer experience section. Basically I paid MSRP +$250 for all the accessories you see on my signature. This because I bought 4 previous acuras/honda from the dealer.

Just to throw in my few cents. I picked up my '01 GG this evening after waiting since July. While it's way to early to tell yet whether or not the well documented '01 issues (thud, weeping mirrors etc) might surface, the car is great and .... quiet! I've heard all the stories about the excess noise level for a vehicle costing close to $40,000, but I think it's definitely acceptable. Also, I kept hearing about how poor the Bose stereo is but again I have no problems with it.

In my case I didn't want to wait another 4 months. If you can do so then fine but I needed it for the winter (north-east) season. I guess I'm saying that if you are just waiting for an '02 because of the changes but could easily get an '01 that you're happy with now, then go for it, you won't be disappointed. :)

A Honda dealer told me today that their version of the MDX was shown in a Los Vegas Honda dealer show, and that it is expected to be out before spring 02. He said that it is 6" longer and has the same engine. Can anyone confirm?
gokings55
In terms of collecting cars- which models are usually worth more, the first year ever produced or second year? If the MDX becomes a collector's car someday maybe the '01 will be worth more- especially if they are able to build more than 40,000 MDX's in subsequent years.
