'02 Touring is ~$31,200 US with destination fee here in Canada. Do we really get X's for ~$6,100 US less than in the US?

Not trying to rub it in- just wondering?

Chuck:

Not to justify what Acura is charging the US customers, but the cost of living is higher in US, which directly impacts the cost of warranty coverage. Also, I believe the coverage is better for US made vehicles (4yrs/50K Miles) . I believe the emissions requiremnts are tougher in the US compared to Canada.

Chuck, where did you see the Canadian pricing for 2002's?

I am very surprised that the MDX's are so much less $ in Canada than the US. If so, I wonder why more people don't buy it in Canada. Granted the warantee is not valid, but getting an extended warantee could cover that.

The price for the '01 that I bought was $47,000 + $950 CDN destination/delivery charge, for a total of $47,950 or, at today's exchange rate of 1.57, $30,541 US.

My friend looking to buy the '02 model tells me the '02 is only $1,000 CDN more, or $637 US more.

Total, therefore, is $31,178 US, or about $6,100 US less than the posted '02 price of $37,300 US for the states.

Isn't the sales tax in Canada 15%? That's more than double the tax rate here in Fla, so that will eat up some, but not all, of your savings. Plus the Canadian dollar has dropped over the last year I think, so depending on when you got your 'X, the price translated into US dollars would have been higher than today's exchange rate you quoted, but probably by only 5-10% at most. Last but not least, you have to live up in the frozen tundra, so you should get someting for your suffering :p J/K

Seriously though, you're right that Acura prices are generally lower in Canada compared to the U.S. even after taxes are taken into account. For example, Acura's Canadian website lists the MSRP for an '02 TL at $37,000 CDN which according to my math equals approx. $23,500 US. My brother in D.C. just paid approx. $29K US for his (I didn't actually ask what he paid, just guessing :) ). I assume the economics are such that Acura feels either a) they can get away with charging a higher price in the U.S., b) they must charge a lower price in Canada to make them competitive in that market, or c) some combination of the above.

I also seem to remember finding out from a CR-Ver in Australia that they were paying only about $17,000 US for a Sport model with sunroof that would be the equivalent to a $21,000 SE model here in the U.S. which isn't even available with a sunroof. Bummer :(

The sales tax here in Alberta is only the national 7% GST tax.

Oops, my bad Chuck. I was thinking of Toronto, sorry for not seeing your actual location. According to this website I found, it looks like Alberta is the ONLY province in Canada that doesn't charge a provincial sales tax in addition to the GST, making your province somewhat of an anomaly :)

GCK - The MDX's are the same, except for a few different options (Canadian MDX's have running lights and core heaters), so a Canadian MDX meets the same emission requirements as the US versions. A Canadian MDX will even pass California's tougher emission requirements.

Lester123 - More U.S. residents don't buy the MDX from Canada because Canadian dealers will not sell to people who live in the U.S. because of complaints from U.S. Acura dealers. You could have a friend buy an MDX in Canada and then buy it from him, or you can go through a U.S. broker who will buy the car from a Canadian broker.
