i know this probably belongs to the electrical or problems forums, but i just thought that i might get more traffic and more input in here, so pardon me.
i was playing around with my malfunctioning (aftermarket) dvd today when all of a sudden the electricals started going haywire. first the mfd showed "check airbag system" and "vsa off" and a couple more error warnings and then the car died on me. now the dome lights are dim, the radio doesn't light up and the instrument cluster dies after a minute or so. the headlamps still turn on, albeit dimly, and the windows roll up and down very slowly. but worst of all, the car won't start; as if it doesn't recognize the key at all. whenever i try to actuate the key, it gives this grating sound and then dies.
what could be the cause of this? did i blow a fuse or what? my uncle thinks it's the battery but i'm not sure. what's the worst case scenario i'm looking at? should i try to replace the battery before i call acura roadside assistance? any input would be greatly appreciated |

| If you're in a safe location, I would just call Acura Roadside and have it towed to the dealer first thing since you're still under warranty. But if you have the inclination to check the battery first, that might solve your problem. The malfunctions seem too widespread to just be a few blown fuses. |

| check your battery, a bad one can be the cause of all of this. |

+1
If recharging the battery doesnt work, I would remove that aftermarket dvd system completely and take it to the dealer. |

| well, all's well that ends well. called roadside assistance and they came and jump started the car. turned on after the first try, was advsed not to turn the engine off until i get the battery replaced, so i let the car run in place for a while. but that was probably the longest time i've idled any of my cars ever. when i went to pep boys to have the battery checked out, they said it was perfectly fine. good thing that they offer free battery check ups and didn't charge me a dime. thanks to all who posted suggestions. much appreciated. |

| Good to see that solved the issue. The battery may be fine, but hopefully you dont have something else draining it. Is your aftermarket dvd system the culprit? |

Do you know how to check for parasitic drain? If you or a friend of yours has a good multimeter then check it out.
My wifes aftermarket Ipod connection was pulling around 55mA. I went into the menu of it and changed the settings to only charge when the key is on and the drain dropped down to normal levels.
It actually pulled current even when it was not charging anything... |
