Frequent Shifting - Click HERE for Original Thread

The MDX is the first vehicle I have ever owned that has an automatic transmission, so maybe this is a dumb question. The MDX seems to shift gears, both up-shifting and down-shifting, quite frequently. Is this normal? Vehicles I drive for work or have rented that have automatic transmissions did not seem to shift so often. Also, I always put it is D5. Is that proper? When would I use the other "D" gears? Also, when would I ever use that VTM button? Do I use it when driving over a snowy pass or just when I am stuck in a ditch?

It's a pain in the a$$, but the MDX is ALWAYS shifting in order to maximize gas mileage. I often leave it in 4th when it does.

In your manual you will see when to use the VTM4 button. Basically, it's only for those times when you are in deep snow/mud and the surface is very slippery, so rear differential lock-up is required. This is at low speed only (<18 mph) and NOT to be used on dry good-traction surfaces.

More gears = more shifting = better performance, less drivetrain noise, better gas mileage, less engine wear, etc. etc. etc.

Perhaps you could swap out the 5 speed in the MDX for an old 3-speed auto from say a Chrysler minivan. (But then it would be in the repair shop more than on the road :) )
