I want to buy the MDX but know diesel is coming out in 2009 (named MDX 2010) - does anyone know when the diesel is coming out? In October like usual or earlier due to the change in people's minds about gas price?

I just cannot make the plunge knowing the MPG is horrible on this car...

The fuel economy on the MDX certainly is not good, but I would not call it "horrible."

If it is cost that concerns you I am not sure that diesel is the best option. You would be able to buy a lot of gas for the cost difference between a gasser and diesel.

Of course your answer to that is that the diesel truck will have a larger residual value. That may or may not be true. I cannot foretell the future. Maybe times have changed and diesels will not be looked down upon in a 4 door sedan. Mercedes tried the diesel many years ago and it was disdained by the public. People seem to think diesels are OK for big trucks but not for their everyday driver.

The public mindset between Europe and the US is not the same. We see diesels as good in large trucks and boats, but not in cars.

Anyway, I think it will be good if Acura produces a diesel for the MDX.

I am averaging 22.7 mpg in a combination of city and highway driving. This is far from "horrible". I am actually getting almost 4 mpg better in my 07 than I did in my 05.

Whats your range of good mpg? Maybe you want a 400H. :o

ROTORRAY
Yea, the 400H might get better mileage but, according to Consumer Reports, I believe, it will take over 10 YEARS to recoup the premium paid for the hybrid with what you save in gas. But you're not spending it on gas so I guess that makes a difference to some.
acura2008
Yes, the cost difference on the Hybrid makes it not worth it - plus who knows how hybrids will hold up 5 years from now and the cost to repair them may be high. Does anyone know when the new diesels will come out...anyone...anyone... :-)

A diesel from Honda/Acura is not a known entity.

Many things will change within the next few years.

As we wean oursleves off oil from the Arab terrorist promoting states we will increasingly go in for Comp. Natual Gas, Electric , Hydrogen Fuel Cell, Hybrid and other vehicles.

Diesel is an "Old Technology" and harms the environment .

?????????????????

The technology is old yes. Otherwise what does that have to do with anything?

I won't go for a diesel, when you talk about economic reason the price of diesel here in the states is always alot more than premium gas. So the mpg you save is not worthy, another reason is that it's hard to find a premium diesel around the kind of diesel that mercedes bluetech uses co'z I bet you that is what they will require you to use. And lastly you will loose bhp but will gain torque good if you are hauling stuff but just driving around town it's useless. Unless they will make a biturbo diesel then it is a diffent story.

As much as i hate the sound and smoke of a 3 year old engine, ^^^this isn't true. Diesel gas is about 38 cents more expensive here, but if you really factor it in the diesel still saves you significant amounts of cash. It definitely did on my old c class, up until i traded it in for the mdx. Oh for which im getting right around 21.9, not really horrible. Its pretty much what the IS350 gives. maybe a little less.

We are not talking about regular diesel that you used to use or the one that they put on trucks and buses. I am talking about a special grade diesel equivalent to premium grade on gasoline which is more expensive and hard to find.

Some insights on

AMERICANS DO NOT LIKE DIESEL

There is a general perception that diesels are smelly, slow and big polluters. Maybe this was true in the past, but head over to Europe and see what is happening. With fuel prices the double of ours, all you see on the road are modern diesels, gas cars are quickly fading from the new car market. Rent a car from Avis or Hertz and you will likely find out when you go to fill up it takes diesel and not gas.

A little less than three years ago I landed in Zurich and rented a car from Avis only to find out the car they had given me was a diesel. I promptly told them that I had no interest in driving a diesel. It turned out I had no choice, it was either a diesel or nothing.

The car was a German GM product; an Opel. I took off and headed for Milan and then on to Bologna in Italy. The drive was through the Swiss Alps and along the Italian highways. The drive was absolutely amazing. The car was powerful, quiet and fun to drive. It was absolutely the best rental car I had ever driven. In the mountains it easily cruised up the hills without shifting gears, on the highway at 85MPH it was smooth as silk. The best part is by the time I arrived in Bologna the fuel gauge was still reading more than 50%. This despite the traffic jams in the city of Milan, the mountains of Switzerland and my high speed cruising in Italy. This car was a blast.

By the end of the trip I had done over 1500 miles in this car. My previous perceptions of diesels had been obliterated. My perceptions of GM had improved to a point where I ask, why don’t they sell us the good ones in NA.

About six months later I purchased a VW diesel TDI Jetta for my wife. After 55,000 miles the car has been great. It is so much fun to drive, it is quiet and powerful. Her average fuel economy is 45 miles per gallon in real world city and highway driving. The oil changes are once every 10,000 miles and the other maintenance has been minimal. Our family is sold on diesel.

All the big car manufacturers are selling diesels in Europe, including Honda. The Honda diesel is one of the best. Not only do they get better fuel economy than the gas versions, they emit less greenhouse gasses. As an example, the Honda CRV, - Converted to US measures.

The gas version gets 29MPG US with 192g of CO2/km or .68lbs of CO2 per mile

The diesel gets 36.2, with 173g/km or .61lbs of CO2 per mile.
So to travel 500 miles, the gas CRV would require 17.25 gallons, the Diesel, 13.8 gallons. I would also have put 34 pounds less CO2 in the air. All in all, I am saving money and reducing my carbon footprint.

It is easy to see why the Europeans have been buying diesels. They are easier to own, cost less to drive, are fun and emit less greenhouse gasses. The switch to diesels has been so dramatic in the last seven years that they now have excess gasoline, which they sell to the US, which keeps US gas prices lower than US diesel prices.

In Canada Diesel is often less expensive than gas, making it a real bargain. There are times where diesel fuel is higher, but this is a recent trend. Even with the higher prices, a modern turbo diesel is a good alternative to gasoline.

There is a widespread negative perception about diesels in the US and Canada. It is understandable considering the history of poor products that were sold in the 70’s and 80’s. But once you experience the torque, the quiet and fun of a modern diesel, you may never purchase another gasoline powered car.

If Acura releases an MDX with Diesel, I will be the first in line to test drive it. I love my current MDX, but given a choice, I would purchase a modern Diesel.

Wow, based on what you decide that? Any specific research, observation, talk to your local grocery store manager..........:2: Oprah......

I do own and MDX and a TDI car. I also come from across the big pon where >50% of all cars/SUVs are in fact diesel. I really do not want to open a big thread about that, but in my mind, if you really can not back you statement with really good data, thatn do not post. Just 2 cents ;)
