Hey all-
I've read the posts on winter tire rec's, but was unable to find any posts on the winter performance of the stock tires.
Has anyone had experience in snow, slush, ice with the stocks?
Does the SH-AWD make a big difference? |

Yes, and yes.
Without shawd, the stock tires would be completely unacceptable in snow. With shawd, I have been able to go through "mashed potatoes" road conditions. The CVSA and shawd indicators blink happily and continually but you just drive straight, climb inclines, and descend hills. It's so good that you must be very careful not to get crazy and drive like there is no snow.
You do hear the CVSA engage the ABS frequently.
I wouldn't deliberately put myself at risk by driving a highway in bad conditions, even with these systems. But when I got stuck out in an unexpectedly bad storm, they got me through.
Now, if you had really good snow tires AND shawd/CVSA, you'd be in much better shape. |

Last winter here in Chicago was a total mess with lots of snow, ice, you name it.
I had the X on stocks (still do) and have had absolutely no problem whatsoever. It will run on snowy roads like it's not even there.
When winter started, as it was a new car for me, I tested its handling in snow in an empty parking lot. I had to try really hard to get the end to skid even a little bit. You can't do doughnuts in it :)
The X is my first AWD car so I can't really make a comparison, but I'll give it two huge thumb up in terms of snow handling. :29: :29: |

| Got mine(vehicle) at the beginning of November 2007. Right away I had ordered the set of winter studless Toyo tires. Put them on after the first snow and had absolutely amazing results throu the winter. Took them off in the spring and a week after got hit by a nasty snow storm. I can tell you that there is no comparison on the way the winter tires behaved on a snowy/icy roads versus the stock tires. You WANT this extra peace of mind and security. |
