Im very knew to buying cars and things like that just to let everybody know haha.
I want to buy and MDX 02 for around 11-12 thousand.

I just want to know, should I expect any problems?
What is a good amount of miles on an 02 for 11-12,000$?

Is it risky to buy one with 75k+ miles on it?
hammermdx
Stay away from the 01 and 02's.....prone to tranny problems although knock on plood my has been fine.

ok well can I get an reliable 03 at the price i stated?

Might be hard to find an 03 at that price without some serious miles. But just keep searching.

I'd still look at the 01/02's You MAY see some problems, but as old as they are, the problem trannies are taken care of. You'd likely see the same failure rate on most vehicles that age. If you're really concerned, just get an aftermarket warranty. Reading these boards are quite helpful, but folks will post their problems so you get that slant. That's one of the reasons the board is here.

Don't get me wrong, the 01/02s may not be totally trouble free, but it's a bit short sighted to completely write them off- especially if you can find a good one with a good deal.

Good luck whichever way you go.

I would take that $11,000 to $12,000 and put it into a newer vehicle with fewer miles. It may not have the "prestige" of the MDX but over time will serve you better.

No such thing as "taken care of" with the 2001/2002. The 2001/2002s that have had transmission replacements are prone to require multiple replacements. That second/third replacement is usually way outside of waranty and not reimbursed by Acura if you are not the original owner. Usually when you see a vehicle advertised for sale that has had it's transmission replaced, that gives you some comfort that you will not have tranny problems for a long time. That is not true for the 2001/2002 MDX. If one still buys a 2001/2002 knowing it's history, they should only do it if they can verify that all service has been done at an Acura dealer so that all the service records are available. And those records should indicate that the vehicle has never had transmission problems or replacement.

I will sell you my '02 for 12k.

I agree with most of the posts above. Buying an '01-'02 may be a risky proposition. If you do decide to buy one I would only buy from a person or dealer I trust.

Good luck.

I think you'll be able to find an 03 in that price range. With gas prices these days, SUVs across the board have been hit hard in resale value. I'd be willing to pay a bit more for one over an 01/02 since it did include some upgrades. It probably also depends on where you live and how abundant they are. Here in SoCal, MDXs are everywhere.

ok thanks guys.
Im now looking into getting a tsx for a little more or an rl...
not exactly sure yet. Idk if i mentioned but im 16. so i think a mdx is a little to nice for a 16 year old.

Wow... really different vehicles... compare apples to apples... the old style RL's are pretty much bullet proof (and have probably been treated better). I like the TSX's but too many have been hot rodded so to speak so I would probably shy away from them. But like I said MDX is a totally different vehicle so you might want to evaluate your needs before jumping to a TSX....

You might as well get a used Honda product. Its cheaper. At 16, I think you better take your insurance rates into consideration.

Nothing wrong with a TSX. Hot rodded? :p

I live in the georgia area so the market is pretty different here than places like so. cal.

I know im comparing apples to oranges.
I just posted her to find out how people liked the mdx here because i really like thwem.

Insurance is not a factor because I will be listed under one of our older cars its a chevrolet lumina like 95 and has a great record so my insurance shouldnt be to much haha. And my parents are paying for it.

16 years old? You'll definitely want to lean towards the TSX but at that price, you are looking at something with close to 100k miles. Even in SoCal where there are TSXs everywhere, they are hard to find used these days because they of their luxury/efficiency combo. The RL won't fit well for someone your age. Heck, my wife thought the new RLs didn't a couple years ago when I was twice your age at 32.

Personally, if I were 16 right now, I'd go for a newer, lower mileage Honda or Scion.

I would get a newer Honda Accord or Civic. The 03 to 04 can be had at that price range are very decent daily drivers. Heck you can probably even get a 2000 Lexus GS for that price

I didnt want to offend anyone by calling it a ricer or riced out... but in retrospect...lol

Is this the right attitude? Learn to be responsible. 16 yrs old is a good age to start. A low performance car will cost less, get into fewer crashes and be harder to roll over than a higher powered SUV. A Honda Civic could have a high probability of getting stolen. A hot rodded Civic tends to attract police attention, thieves attention and collisions. Maybe not a Honda this time for a 16 year old.

the only car that my parents wont allow me to get is a car with a bad saftey rating, or just a crappy car, or a fast car because my insurance will sky rocket.

I would recommend you buy something that is easy on gas...you will enjoy driving more and drive much more if you can fill up cheaper. Also check insurance rates on several years and models you are interested in....rates vary and at 16 you won't get too many breaks.
Above all, get as many airbags as you can afford.:2:

Just to let you know *they* are out there I got a 1 owner 02/touring(I had no idea the diffrences) for 8.5k w/110mi off CraigsList, but dealer serviced since new. I thought that was a deal, never in a accident/serviced as manual instructed,(all reciepts) no rips or tears just needed a little TLC and it great 4me!
tygger
In the end, get what will make you happy... but consider that maintenance, etc will tend to be more expensive for "nicer" cars. Are you paying for gas? If so, consider that gas will be noticeably more expensive in the SUV.

FWIW, I have a couple friends with an '02 and '03, both with over 100k miles and neither of them have had any transmission problems. Go figure...
