I have a stone chip at the front edge of the hood. It is small, but it has rusted. I already have the paint from the dealer.

What is the best way / rigth way to prep the damaged area? How should I remove the rust? Do I need primer before the touchup paint?

Thanks

Yes, yes and yes. You must remove the rust down to bare metal use as fine as grit and a tiny piece to do so. Or look below at the link they have a pen like device to sand. Then prime then apply the touch up. Of course it will never look as good as original. Handyman Magazine has a great write up on this pick one up. Then even had Griot's kit for touchup paint. http://www.griotsgarage.com/p2p/sea...Arrivals&page=1

If you are going to sand down to bare metal make sure you know what you are doing. Unless you know how to feather edge it out properly don't touch it. Each layer of coating needs 1 inch of feather edging technically. IF you hit bare metal, I would suggest etching primer as it will etch into the bare metal and protect it from spreading (rust). Then yah, primer it there are spray can versions you can use. It does the trick. Then apply paint after wards and clear coat (comes in a spray as well). I usually only do this to inners of a car, where visibility is low and to get cars out of the shop fast ;)

Usually if you repair ASAP there is no rust. Try not fixing it in cold temps because the paint is thicker due to temps I might add. But in my experiance just using a pots and pans plastic scrubber, removing as much rust as possiable not bringing it down to the primer and cleaning it with isopropal or ideally denatured alchol then just the 1 lightest coat of touchup. 0n bumpers 2 because it is deeper usually works for me but im no perfectionist. There will always be dings and scratches to address is my outlook that way i do not have a cow when not if it happens! Good Luck!
