Background: I have owned numerous Honda products. If you leave the car's A/C in RECIRC mode after shuting the car off, you often time get the "mildew" smell or odor next time you use the car. The cure was always to drive for a few days with A/C FRESH only and crack the windows when not in use and things would return to normal.
On those Hondas when you switched between FRESH and RECIRC, the fan noise and volume would increase when you went to RECIRC from FRESH. I noticed on my X that when the RECIRC light is on there is no diff in noise of volume of air. I just thought that they have a more sophisticated A/C system that stopped the increased noise from happening. BUT now that I getting the smell, I wondered if maybe my RECIRC was stuck on regardless of the light.
Do you guys notice the change in fan noise and volume between the two settings? For those who do notice a diff, do you have any odor issues?
Thanks,

I do notice a difference in the sound and volume of air that's being pushed through the vents when I hit the air recirculation button. I've also noticed a mildew-y odor at times when I reestablish normal airflow after I've left the system on recirc. for a while, though it always clears itself up.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Adam
PS - It's worth noting here that I've had the TSB fix for the "whistling" recirculation issue applied to my X. |

AC SMELL:
common with honda ac systems this includes acura's...
Most common cause:
Short drives during the summer which causes moisture to build up in your system. Don't panic! I would recommmend replacing the cabin ac filters while doing this the CORRECT way. Buy Wurth or do a search here on "wurth" as I posted in details about it.....

I can tell a difference when switching between the two modes but it also depends on the circumstances. On the previous Honda products, if they had manual A/C vs auto, the difference will be more significant because it only knows on vs off. On the MDX with auto, if you turn on recirc while your interior is hot with a low temp setting, you should easily be able to tell the difference. If your interior has reached the level close to your temp setting then switch to recirc, you probably won't be able to tell the difference because the system knows it doesn't need to adjust much.
What I've done on other cars to get rid of the smell is to run fresh air through the system continuously. I pretty much have the fan running all the time. I just set the temp and turn off A/C then hit Auto if I need the A/C. After a couple weeks, you should smell a dramatic improvement if not going away altogether. Other suggestions I've read over on the BMW forum is to spray Febreeze or Lysol into where the car draws air from the outside but I've never done that cause who know what that could lead to. |
