im a 05 owner and was given an 08 as a loaner for a week and i have to say that i'm not impressed with the new mdx compared to mine. although the 08 has more hp , my 05 feels like it has better pickup. my 05 is much more roomier too.

Thanks for your insight...

Insight like this makes me want to go trade my '08 sport/ent for a used prius or a neon. Your '05 feels like it has better pickup? Give me a break. Pretty depressing with a giantic DENIAL there acuramdxman.

Denial? not so much. The tech options is nice, so is the handling, but 300hp feels kind of weak. To be honest i drove it one morning accelerated to higher rpm's and it actually cut out on me. I also noticed the same torque converter sound at around 1500 rpm's that have failed on earlier models.

As Tim's motto goes, "Perception is reality". Leave the OP alone in his 05 where he's happy. He won't miss the 0.8x g skidpad, tight cornering and 60-0 13x ft braking on the 08 X. I have an 01 and 07 X and guess which one I prefer to drive (besides the M3 sitting next to them that is)?

Are you seriously insane?

May be your 05 makes more NOISE hence you feel that its going faster...

Yeah just like that TSX loaner......all loud 4 banger noise and slow as snizt......:o

300 hp vs 265 hp, you figure their would be i significant notice in pickup , well their isnt, dont be a bunch of haters , maybe you guys should drive both and compare.

Super Handling AWD does eat up some power but the trade off in handling esp. in twisties would allow me to hand you your rear end......AND as it breaks-in the hidden power unleashes.....I'm sure the one you drove was tortured by loaner customers.....no pun intended....

no actually it had very few miles for an 08. 3000 miles. one thing the 08 has a significant advantage in is the handling, although mine handles well also.

Few miles on loaner=not broken in.....and certainly not broken in with ONE owner but tons of customers....poor MDX....

Handling: HANDS DOWN FOR THE 07+ MDX over the 1st gen....no questions about it.......

I have an 04 RL and I know the newer ones handle better yada yada yada, but remain very happy with my "old mans RL"........its built like a tank with NO plastic interior trim like all the new ACura's come.......The last of the BEST built Acura's.......:1: :1: :1:

Still, nothing can cure that 07-09 butt-ugly gray trim, except help of a friendly body shop. But it takes LS guts and some loose change (and maybe a nice climate too), and some serious paintjob skills to make that transformation.

Nothing else matters...

I also have '05 and I too doubt MDX Gen 2 is slower, but I do agree on paper it sounds more impressive than behind the wheel. I guess learning how to use semi-automatic (or was it semi-manual) shifting may help, but outta the box it did not impress me either.

If I made cornering and braking the highest priority, I would also look at FX.

Overall, I'm put off by the (lack of) quality of materials Acura uses, I'm not a fan anymore.

First, thanks for your compliment. Agree with you on 07-09 butt-ugly gray trim. You think they would catch on since 07. They might wait for 2010 for a "make-over" before the 3rd gen.

Second, really sorry to hear you're no longer an Acura fan. I also agree with you that Acura (fit & finish) isn't what they used to be. Having said, it has seemed like a global change. Same (fit & finish issues) apply for my '07 Lexus & '07 BMW.

Bottom line, Acura is not alone. If you were out shopping for cars like I have been, you will know there is a lot of JUNK out there. Acura still stands out from the crowd for best bargain.

I'm personally a fan of the gray sections of the bumpers. It give an illusion of a diffuser like those on sport aero kits i.e. my old tl with a-spec kit or the M3 rear diffuser.

Having driven both, I honestly can't see how anyone could find anything better to like about the previous generation MDX. Let's see, it's slower, it's brakes are abysmal, and the 2nd generation MDX can run rings around it in the twisties... And in spite of any perceived size deficiencies, the new MDX is actually marginally larger in all key interior dimensions, except for cargo capacity, where it's within one cubic foot. As for the bumpers -- I love 'em. Not only do they impart a more rugged aura to the MDX, but if you live in a big city like I do and park on the street on occasion, they offer a helluva lot more peace of mind than painted ones do.

That said, beauty -- and value -- is in the eye of the beholder. If there are folks out there who prefer the old to the new, then bully for them, I say.

Regards,
Adam

PS - As for Sgt. Glock's assertion that if ultimate handling were the criteria, he'd choose an FX, I would agree -- if the FX had a third row and came within a country mile of the MDX's cargo hauling/towing capabilities, that is. Sorry, but the 2nd gen MDX is still the ne plus ultra of CUVs in terms of performance, handling, utility and value.

I own an 07 and have driven the previous gen extensively as well. The previous gen feels "lighter" and so that might aid the perception of being faster. Lighter steering, airier cabin etc.

But the 2nd gen MDX is much more European and hunkered down in feel, especially with the Sport Model's suspension.

That said, I no longer need a large CUV anymore, and will likely be trading my 07 MDX in tomorrow on a Subaru WRX hatch. hahah
