I'm curious to see how many of you run snow tires on your MDX.

What is snow?

I'm going to experience snow this winter unlike any before as I have spent all my previous winters in North Carolina, where everything shuts down if there's a dusting of white on the roads.

We'll see how it goes.

I wish that would happen where I live...

Had an 01, now an 08. Never used snows but used all weather. Never spun.

I didn't have a good idea how many of us are just pavement thumpers and how many used their car in the snow. it'd be interesting to see how many of us actually ever take the X off pavement and onto snow/gravel/dirt/sand etc. summer poll!

I don't think of snow as off-pavement. In fact, in snow I try extra hard to stay on the pavement. :)

I live near you and I run snows. But I drive to Tahoe every weekend from Dec-Apr and I stay up there for a few weeks during the winter. I have two sets of wheels and have the snows on one and summers on the other.

I'm just about to buy some new snow tires since mine are now completely bald. Debating what to get. Nokians seem great but are expensive. I can get some other brands from Tirerack for $100-140/tire. Nokians are $200ea.

In Montreal, we have snow and ice from late November until the end of March. I would not dream of driving the MDX without snow tires. Even with snow tires, it is not as easy to control as other winter cars I drive or have driven.

The MDX (mine is a 2008) is ok, but it will go sideways on you if you are not careful on snow and ice. Straightline traction is great, but in corners or when the snow is less than virgin, the car has a tendancy to slide.

If I could stand the sound, I would probably fit studded snow tires. It would help on hardpacked snow and ice.

My experience with Suv's and 4 wheel drive cars is that the issue is not straightline traction, but stopping and turning. Going around a corner on the highway or country road can become very unnerving when the truck starts to understeer. I have found myself driving significantly slower in the MDX on snow covered roads than in other cars.

The best handling car in the snow that I have experienced is the Infiniti G35X. The only down side is the traction control system eats brakes, to a point that I sold the car after 2 years because of the high cost of maintaining the brake system. But it is amazing in the snow and ice.

for my money the issue there is weight. it doesn't matter how good your tires are, you can't overcome the simple physics of inertia and momentum. if you have a large mass moving in a certain direction and limited traction due to poor road conditions you're going to have trouble changing the cars path.

I had snow tires for my Subaru WRX wagon, that little thing was light, AWD and with Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22's on it it handled in thick, packed, icey snow, slush all without skipping a beat. of course, it wasn't really that comfortable to sit in the back seats and there was only really room for four people but hey, it was fun as hell to drive!

I'm in michigan ....I don't run snow tires ...X runs fine with the stock all seasons....you can slide with it when turning too fast but it's nothing to panic about... nothing beats taking your time in snow... :29:
