Leaking Side Mirror - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a very strange problem. Apparently, liquid gets inside my driver's side mirror (but not the passenger's side). This results in lot's of water streaks on the driver's door and the driver's side passenger's door after each car wash or rain. I've started towel drying these water streaks after the first drive after a car wash or when it stops raining so the streaks have stopped. In addition to being annoyed, I'm concerned that there might be a crack in the housing of the side mirror (which I can't find) or that the internal mechanisms inside the mirror may rust. Any similar experiences or thoughts? Thanks. dkly
Yep I have the same problem with my GG MDX. It is a bit annoying and I will have my dealer look at it on my next scheduled visit.

Got the same problem too. I tried putting a vacuum hoping that it will suck out all the water but after 10 minutes, water drips out again. VERY ANNOYING.
I've had the same problem since I took delivery of my GG Touring/Nav in early Nov. and it's driving me nuts, since the streaks are highly visible on GG. CoincidentalIy (almost scary), I decided late last night that I was going to mention the streaking on this forum when I logged in today to see if anyone else had the same problem.

I've tried everything I can think of to remove all of the water from behind the mirror's housing. I too have tried a vacuum. No luck. My latest weapon was a can of compressed air in the hope that I'd be able to blow all the water out from behind the housing after returning home from the car wash or after driving the MDX in the rain. Still no luck; the next day I've got the damn streak again. (In my case it's only one that runs all the way down the side.)

After returning from the car wash a few days ago, I used about a third of a 12 oz. can of compressed air to blow out the accumulated water. Then I fixed myself a scotch and water, sat down and stared at the area for a full half- hour to see if I could spot any dripping. When I couldn't, I congratulated myself for being so ingenious by using the compressed air. The following morning, when I went out to the garage, the streak running down from the mirror housing might just as well have jumped off the side of the MDX, slapped me about the face a few times and said in its best Jack Nicholson voice: "I'm baaaaack!"

Almost makes me wish I would have opted for the SS instead of the GG.

I too have the leaking mirror. Drives me crazy. Let me know if anyone finds a solution.

I found a car wash that actually air hoses out the whole vehicle before the drying process... and I've stopped having this problem... The first car wash that I went to was useless, and I used to have the problem... but not any more.

If your car wash does air hose down the vehicle (as its last step).. just tell the guys to do a better job.

My car wash doesn't do the air hose number. I wound up buying a six-pack of Dust-Off compresed air canisters at Costco and blowing the water out from behind the mirror myself. Takes a minute or two, but it's worth it not to have that damn water stain down the side of the MDX. Shows up like crazy on GG. Almost makes me wish I had opted for the SS.
Same problem with my "green machine". Actually my wife came up with the fix. Guess she was tired of me moaning after every wash. This is an easy work around that works like a charm. I simply cover the mirror with a chamois before using the hose. I clean this mirror first with a damp sponge then cover. This keeps water from getting inside the mirror. I guess my wife grew tired of me bring my chamois with me. You see I would have to stop after driving a short distance from home to wipe of what appeared to be ten gallons of water that would pour from the mirror. Give it a try it works.

MDXMAN: Are you saying the water build-up is inside the mirror housing itself and not behind the bracket that attaches the mirror and the housing to the car? If that's the case, then the accumulated water inside the mirror housing would have to flow to the bracket in order for it to leave a streak down the side of the car. Otherwise the water would simply drip from the mirror housing onto the ground without leaving a streak. Considering the fact that I use high pressure air to blow any residual water out from behind the bracket and STILL find a streak down the side of the body the next day leads me to believe you may be onto something.
This water is accumulating in the mirror. Driver's side only. As I explained in my earlier message covering the mirror while washing prevents this from occuring. Without covering take a drive right after washing your car and bank hard right a few times. The water pours out the mirror. Do the same thing after covering and there will be no water. For some reason the driver's side mirror collects water. I can live with this considering we own one of the finest vehicals in production
As you apparently hand-wash your MDX yourself and cover the driver's mirror with a chamois to keep the water out, I use a car wash. Borrowing from your idea, I found something that does a terrific job of covering the mirror. For others reading this who use a car wash and have a leaking driver's mirror, pick up a package of large Ziplock plastic bags with the "Slideloc" (plastic zipper) feature at the grocery store. One bag fits over the mirror perfectly, and the plastic zipper allows you to tighten the bag so it won't blow off in the car wash. Hallelujah! No more water in the mirror, and no more streaks down the side! As a favor to others with the problem I think I'll post this info on the Town Hall board. Thanks, MDXMAN, for your input!
I picked up my brand spamkin new ride yesterday and on the way home from the dealer, above the music blaring from the excellent (urgh!!) BOSE stereo, I heard water gushing. Looked left, and there was Niagara Falls on my side view mirror.

Strange!!!!

I got this curse too, but it does not show on the Starlight Silver metallic.

The water tends to shoot out and hit my driver side door.
Never noticed it on the door, but it may be there hiding!
:p

Weird.
Is water leaking down the side door or the window? Would it get inside the car, assuming side window all the way down?

SS Tour/Nav due in June
On my MDX, water retained by the mirror drips onto the body of the MDX directly below the mirror bracket, not on the window. For whatever reason the outside mirrors on the MDX (at least mine and a few others I'm aware of) hold water after running the vehicle through a car wash or driving in the rain (it seems to be most prominent on the driver's side). Furthermore, it appears that the water has a channel to the bracket holding the mirror to the body, since the water streak I'm referring to starts immediately below the bracket. (If it simply dropped from the housing holding the mirror itself, it would fall directly to the ground and not come into contact with the body resulting in a water streak. The only way I can see where the water from the mirror would spot the driver's door window would be at speed where the aero dynamics might tend to blow the water straight back or up instead of allowing it to fall to the pavement. This situation has been driving me nuts for a couple of months now. I've done everything I could to blow the water out of the bracket holding the mirror to the body. Yet, when I look at the car the next day I find yet another water streak. MDXMAN's idea of covering the enire mirror while washing the MDX (whether by hand or running it through a car wash) seems to work at preventing the water streak problem.
I took my MDX in to the dealer today for the first scheduled maintenance. I asked them to check into the leaking side mirror and the thud. They just called and told me they fixed both problems. According to the service person, the leaking side mirror was caused by a gap in the mirror seal. They used some silicon to seal the gap. I have yet to verify whether their solution works and will post my experience after the next car wash or rain. While MDXMAN's solution may work with car washes, I'm not sure how practical it is during rains. Wish me luck. dkly

Thanks bilmat for your help...
Apparently there is still a possibility of water dripping inside the car at high speed with window all way down...have same problem with a Camry I'm (still) driving...believe me...it's very annoying!!! I usually drive with my air off and sunroof/windows open, and water drippin' all over isn't something nice when you're all dressed up for a business meeting...

SS Tour/Nav due in June
Mine is SS and the water was gushing like crazy when I drove it home from the dealer. I will be interested to see if the dealer was able to fix it. Living in the Northwest, there tends to be a lot of rain, I'd hate to have my car leaking all the time...

Mikey
dkly, who's your dealer service rep. (Dealer and Phone #, so my service rep can call yours), it would be nice to know what his solution exactly is, if it works (please keep us informed if your mirrors stop leaking.)

PLUS, I think there are actually 2 issues for leaking mirrors.

1) Water that collects inside the actual mirror housing behind the actual mirror. This water drips down and "waterfalls" against the front door (both driver's and passenger's sides) after a recent carwash or possibly a rainstorm. I discovered this as I was spraying water behind the mirror with a water bottle and after I washed the car this morning. But, this issue dissipates fairly quickly, after driving it for a few minutes at speed, which evacuates most of the water and of course leaves annoying water streaks down the side of your door.

AND,

2) Then there is the real culprit, water which somehow collects behind the plastic covering (the part which is flush with the driver's (or passenger's) window). This water drips, and drips, and drips for hours on end, even a day after you've washed the MDX. It drips right at the front bottom tip of the plastic coverning (I can't think of a better name for this piece) where it meets the metal part of the door. (Somebody please photograph this pesky drip and share it in the gallery, so everyone can agree where it is, and hopefully Acura will see it and figure it out.)

I know others have figured out solutions for when the MDX is being washed, but most are impractical when it rains and your driving. Hopefully, somoeone or Acura will solve this issue. I'll keep trying everytime I wash the "baby"!

I used Acura of Pasadena. The Service Advisor was Larry Nunes (626-792-7979). Here's what the invoice said: "CHECK WATER STREAKS FROM DRIVERS' DOOR MIRROR AFTER RAIN FALL OR WASHING CAR ADVISE/LREAKS (SIC) AT GASKET/ADDED SILICONE TO GASKET///TESTED OK." There was a bit of leaking after I took it back from the dealer, but I thought it might have been water that collected in the mirror housing prior to the attempted solution. It rained this weekend and so far so good. I'll report back after I wash the car.

Washed my GG MDX today and discovered that all you really need to do is blast some compressed air right at the seam where the bottom of the mirror meets the door. I tried this and I saw no water leak down even an hour after I finished washing my MDX.

Yeah, but check for water streaks tomorrow!

I've used compressed air on several occasions to blow out the residual water from behind the mount and have kept at it until I was sure I got it all. When I check the side of the MDX the following day, I always wind up with new snail tracks!

I'm taking my MDX in for service next week and plan to have my dealer put silicon between the body and the mount as described in one of the posts above to see if that solves the problem.
