for the "dubber's" :

what is your wheel and tire size? am fixin to put some dubs on my x'. just want to know which one will fit.

will a 20x9 wheel fit on the x'? if so, which tires would go with it. thanks.
DubbedSSmdx
greetings dromayn!

There are a couple of choices out there for you. I personally have gone with a 295/40/20 Eagle HP Plus tire. The other sizes that guys on this site have used are either the 275/45/20 or the 265/50/20. It's all a matter of preference. From my experience the 265/50/20 is way too much side wall and causes rubbing. There are no problems with the 295/40/20's or 275/45/20's. If you go with the 295/40/20's go with the Pirelli Scorpion's!!!

Keep MDXin'!
dromayn
thanks a lot!!! just want to check if a 20x9 would fit on the x'.
DubbedSSmdx
yes the 20x9 will fit... someone on this site has used a 20x9

Hello Dromayn
Theres several things you should consider.
1st)Wheel diameter.
If its larger than stock the ABS will not function properly without reprograming the computer and your acceleration performance will suffer.
2nd) Tires with very low aspect ratios telegraph every ripple and sharp bump on the road .This is a fact and not just an opinion. With a machine like the MDX which has rather high spring rates the harshness will be intensified. If you drive on perfectly smooth roads this would not be a problem. Just want to help you from being unhappy with a major purchase. Wheels and tires are very $$$ and knowledge is power.
My interested in taller wheels and wider tires was for the performance improvements first and the looks a close second. This is why I chose to go with 19x8 Moda R6 alloy wheels and 255/50x119 Pirelli Scorpion Zero Tires. The touring wheels and the Modas both have a +45mm offset and the tires have the same rolling diameter of 29". The Michelins on factory touring wheels have a 7" wide contact patch and the Moda/Pirelli Zeros have an 8 1/2" Patch. I absolutely love the performance and the bumps do not beat me to death. This combo from the tirerack.com cost $1,900 including shipping. I will use the stockers in the winter but now its time for fun.
Hope this will be of help to someone.
PS DubbedSSmdx Your X looks beautiful .

Harry thanks for the compliment on the X. You're right on with all the specifics you listed in regards to factors to note when upgrading your wheels. I'd love to see your X with 19's! Please post pics for us!

Keep MDXin' fellas!

Harry,

Could you post pics of your MDX w/the R6's. I have found those to be the closest in design to Lexus OEM rims (i.e. RX300) and thought they would look very nice on the MDX - but I am sure that the tirerack mock-up doesn't do them justice.

(edit: sorry for the second request, didn't see the earlier one)
DubbedSSmdx
Here's a PIC of the MODA R6's on a RedRock! The look is "nice and clean"! I can see this look fitting alot of MDXer's tastes!

Hello All
This is the only photo I have right now of my X since I mounted the new wheels. I cannot wipe the smile of my face. The handling improvement is that huge. I'd be more than happy to let any of my fellow MDXers test drive this beauty.

Sorry Guys
When I figure out how to post my jpeg I will upload it. I shure feel silly.

I can't tell if there was sarcasm in that comment - but yes, I really do like the look. Although, call me old fashioned (I think you just did ;) ) I think I would prefer them without the lowered springs. Are those 255/50 tires?

There was no sarcsm in my commentary. I can also appreciate the clean and simple approach as well. However, the red rock pic that i posted is from the tire rack site. I'm not sure what kind of additional mods they added if any. It could well be photoshop wizards at their best!

Hey Harry,

Out of curiousity. My friend uses 255/55/18 Pirelli Scorpions and the tires perform great in both wet and dry conditions. However, I guess due to the tread pattern the tires are a bit louder than normal. It's a sound that my friend and I don't mind but I've heard of some that complain about it. I'm looking to get the Pirelli Scorpions on another application I have in mind and would like to get your feedback on the the tires. BTW, your MDX looks great - I like the look you've accomplished! Be sure to post lots of pics for us all!!!

Keep MDXin' guys!
Harry
Hi DubbedSSmdx
The Scorpion Zeros on my X seem to be no louder than the stock michelins. My interest in these tires was for the great all around perfomance and the sound they make is music to my ears. My gas mileage on the highway has noticeably improved and the way this MDX eats up the twisties keeps a grin on my face. I thought it handled good with the stock tires but its waaaaay better now
Keep customizing. Harry

DubbedSSmdx
Harry,

you're right on with the handling comment... I couldn't believe how well it took the twist and turns after the wheel upgrade. Especially since I went with a 295 tire and a 8.5 wide wheel....
octavian
Harry, any special reason for the Modas vs. let's say the Mille Miglia Action wheels? I was checking things out on Tirerack.com and both of these were listed as options.

I am salivating over the prospect of doing this, but don't know if I want to shell out $1900 buckeroos, but I love what you and Dubbed have done.
DubbedSSmdx
octavian,

trust me! you will not regret spending the money on this mod for your car. I'm sure the other dubCLUB guys on this site and Harry will attest that their MDX handles ten times better and looks different than the growing number of MDX's out there! jus my two cents. Putting new wheels on is like driving your MDX for the first time; and we all know how that felt!!! Also, if you do your shopping i'm sure you can get a 19in setup for around 1500; which is an awesome price considering that Acura would probably charge 1500 or more for the stock wheels which are a boring 17inches!!!!
octavian
Dubbed.....you are making things verrrry difficult for me....you know, I thought the same thing about all the X's starting to pop up around here....I wanna be different.

Another question, do stores typically take the stock wheels back for some kind of credit? Or should I keep 'em (with the original tires) like Harry to switch back to in the winter months?

PS....glad you got your Zaino....been following the theads there...:D

DubbedSSmdx
octavian,

yeah, i think we've all kept are stock wheels. even if i lived in california i would keep my stock wheels. there's always a place and time when the stock setup will be needed.
dromayn
dubbed,

do you have problems when braking??? what about the road noise?? is there a significant increase in road noise since tire size is a bit bigger???
Harry
octavian
I chose the Moda R6s because I like the simple 5 spoke design and its extremely easy to clean and wax. Its just a personal call. I'm not a big chrome fan however I really like the look of dubbed's X. Also keep in mind that my personal tire/wheel choice was motivated by my desire for increased performance first and the visual second. As dubbed will tell you $1500 to $2000 is entry level for premium tires on basic oversize alloy wheels. You can spend Waaaaay more than that just on wheels.

dromayn
Stopping performance is noticeably improved on dry and wet pavement. MDXs are hefty little rigs (4000 plus) and 255s to 295 are not out of line on this vehical. As for noise levels, the V rated Pirelli Scorpion Zeros I have found to be about the same, db wise as my stock Michelins. I cannot comment on any other tire in this size range other than the fact that the Zeros are top rated for performance while still offering a fairly good life span.
Guys, just tell your wives (if you have one) that theses wheels and tires will make the MDX safer. because it will.
Harry
octavian
Harry, thanks for your advice on the wheels....the Modas seem easier to clean than the Milles. And I agree with you on the chromes....wow they (Dubs' especially) looks great, but keeping them clean is a probe for me.

Yeah, I can see it now....."Darling, you want you wittle hubby to dwive in complete safety, now, snookums, don't you? Hmmmmmm?" I am gonna give it a try!:D

DubbedSSmdx
octavian,

you brought up a great point! cleaning of the wheels is a big aspect to consider. I'm sure it takes a bit more time to clean my wheels than it would take to clean the moda's. It's a labor of love, however it is a point to consider when choosing an aftermarket wheel. I could name and/or point a couple of wheel's that would be hell to keep clean and/or clean at that! also, you're are correct in sayin that the upgraded wheels do make the mdx safer. The mdx drive's with more confidence and sharpened agility. if you guys are in the area i would love for you to test drive my setup.

keep mdxin' guys!

Dubbed is right on as far as handling and looks. I live in San Diego and the only X's I see out here are base or touring X's with no mods and believe me, lately there have been alot of X's. I'm very happy with my wheels and tires - get a lot of compliments.
JLee
ok, after taking a turn and feeling those sidewalls bend like hell

i came in search of this thread.

So Harry, what is the appropriate offset for the X ? and what is the max tire and wheel combo one can go without adversely impacting the X ? braking and etc...

any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

anyone use any of the wheels from discounttire.com ? any other dealers worth looking into ?

Thanks in advance !

jeff

Harry,

Thanks for the pics (finally ;) ). I gotta say, those rims are probably a close second on my list of favorites (the 2000 SEMA/Prototype Rims being #1 - scroll down about halfway for the rims).

BTW, do you have the weight of the rim + tire (I'm guessing it was on the packing label from Tirerack)? Just curious how it compares to the stock Touring combo.

Harry
Hello JLee
The stock Acura MDX wheels have a +45mm off set and a rolling diameter of 29". Wheel/tire combos Like dubbed's are maximum for the X. 20x8.5 with 295/40x20s. This setup is way cool but be warned you have very little side wall to deflect over pot holes.
Wider tires will give you the best straight line braking performance. Extremely wide tires will allso give you a bit more stearing wheel wiggle (road surface feed back) than you might like. Low profile tires tend to have almost no tread crown and on some road surfaces this can make the tire hunt around a bit. My only advice is to stay with a 29" diameter wheel. This is very important as taller tires would adversely effect the ABS and the combined traction control system. Done correcty, wheel and tire upgrades can transform the already excellent MDX into one hell of a fun machine.
"If you want to have some fun,you have to have some fun, you know.

Although I probably WOULD NOT get them (I live in Brooklyn - my custom rims... and probably the whole 'DX would not last a night), I have been jealously watching all the wheel upgrades you guys make.

Here is my addition (these wheels have surfaced awhile back, by gto date's post) - thanks to dubbs, the confusion was cleared - I'm talking about Lowenhart LD1s

Everytime I look at these, my heart just stops.

For the heck of it, I wanted to look at the price tag. WHOA!!!!!
I may not have found the 'cheapest' version, but whopping 5Gs?

octavian
I went to sprewell.com, per sgtgloks's post and guess whose ugly face appeared.......none other than one of my favorite NBA players, Latrell Sprewell....who apparently sponsors or is owner of the site.

That alone is enough to make me stick with my stock wheels.

I guess it's harder to choke a chrome wheel than an NBA coach.
rliggayu
his probably one of the owner, anyways when he was in Golden State Warriors he was interviewed by a local sportscaster here in Oakland and he mentioned that his into car racing and likes to get under the hood for spare time

Hey, I didn't even look at the homepage, just followed the links from another site... ANYHOW, the link was to the actual wheel + tire page, I wasn't looking for any NBA stars! :)

Man, I am sold. Just called tire rack and was quoted $1867 mounted, balanced and shipped to my door.

Harry, one question....any problems with the tires rubbing the inside fender wells, front or rear...especially when loaded down with 4 passengers or a bunch of stuff in the back?

Once again, nice ride!

They will have stock on August 23. The rep said they will have an ample supply delivered at that time.

Any worries about the tires rubbing? I plan to install a hitch to tow two seadoos....I'm a little concerned about rubbing on the back when fully loaded and on the front as I take the sharp left hand turn into my garage. Any feedback from those with this setup????

Hey KaCee
The Moda R6 9x8 has a +45mm offset just like stock and the 255x50 tires increased width is equaly spaced on both sides of the original center line. There is plenty of clearance, lock to lock, fully loaded our with just a driver. Road feel and traction are vastly improved over the stock Michelins. Performance on wet roads is secure and very predictable.

Two things you need to know about this upgrade.
1, These are SUMMER tires. I will remount my stockers this fall
2, You need to give these tires a good 750-1000 miles to brake in.

Wheels and tires are a very personal call. Like colors and clothes, This combo works for me. I love the platinum finish and the wheels are a snap to keep spotlessly clean and polished.

:4: Hope this is of help.

Hey KaCee,
Not sure which size setup you are asking for. But, here is my set up. Wheels are 19x8 using +40 offset. Tires are 255/50/19 Scorpions. This set up equals the OEM specs. No rubbing in the wheelwell. good thing about SUVs are they have enough room so the wheels won't rub when heavily loaded.

Hey Guys
The Pirelli Zeros, 255/50 on the R6 19x8's have the same 29" rolling diameter as the stock tires. Believe me when I say, I did the research.

When these tires are worn out, I'm sticking with the Zero's

SOLD! I think my concern is a little more with the width of the tire vs. the diameter of the package.

We get 2-3 snows a year. I'm wondering if I will really need to remount the stockers? Anyway thanks for the comments
