Pin-Stripping - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a Dark Emerald Green MDX and feel it needs some side accenting/contrast (Like the two tone Passports, but not as extensive). I think I'll start with running boards and pin striping (tape type, not paint). Has anyone on this forum added pin stripes to your MDX? If so, where did you place it (high near windows or middle along door handles), what color did you choose (interior or fender flair color, etc.) and was the effect what you anticipated? Thanks!
MDXINFO,

I put thin black stripes (3 closely spaced) on the Mesa Beige close up to the window line. They look great.

Good luck.
MESABEIGE...THANKS FOR THE REPLY! I have visited a nearby Body/Detail shop and we tested a couple of positions with an interior colored stripe.. I originally thought it would look good at the doorhandle line, but was convinced that the line you refer to is better...it really looks good rounding the back corner at that height. I'm having some Perma Plate put on at the bodyshop (it's affordable there) and will have the striping done after so that changes can be made later if desired w/o messing with the perma plate.
Any photos of the pin-striping available. I have a GG and think that some striping might dress it up. I originally thought about the door handle line, but I'd like to see what some others have done 1st.

In September...while grazing at a San Diego Home Depot, I noticed this awesome van in the parking lot, adorned with fantastic graphic artwork. While standing outside of his truck...in awe...he walked out and handed me his card. He's really talented and reasonably priced so I'm passing his name for those who are geographically desireable.

I' planning to have some detailing and pin striping done on our Dark Emerald MDX tomorrow (Monday). Some of the posts here have been helpful, but there's still time for more input. Any other suggestions/experiences etc.?
You could put some sort of writing or art work halfway between the back door and rear of car. EX. When we dress ours of for the showroom we put --------Arlington Edition--------. Granted you wouldnt write this but Im sure there are lots of things you could think of...Just some more ideas...Terry
Had our Emerald Green MDX in for an application of Perma-Plate (inside and out) and pin-stripping today (monday) at a local body/detail shop. Great service and work (perma-plate was far more affordable than dealer). The Perma-plate really adds depth to the color, even in low light...Really pleased with the effect. The pin-stripping was well done. I chose a tan/gold metallic narrow twin stripe, positioned off the upper body ridge close to the window line. In that position it wraps around the backside completely and finishes at the side lights in the front. I'm still getting used to it...it adds a lot, but it also becomes a striking addition to an otherwise subtle profile. The jury is still out until I live with it for awhile and see it in true daylight. Next addition will be running boards.
If any of you forum readers live in the NW region and want a recommendation to a good detail/paint shop, let me know. The one I used is very good and capable of most any paint modification you may desire. They have experience with Honda/Acura products before and after sale.

Can you post some pictures?

I'm interested.

My MDX is Silver w/ Ebony interior.
What color should I use as a pin stripe, if I decide to do it......BLACK ?

On silver I would guess that a metallic graphite or metallic black would be best. I tried to emulate the interior saddle tone, but at first glance it's a bit on the gold side.. I'll post some photos...not certain how/ where on this site to do so (gallery?). Can you give me a brief rundown of the posting process? Thanks!
On silver...you're options are pretty open...Black is good...also any of the deep burgandys...even metallic navy. You could even go with a darker silver... but I'd maintain the depth of the metallic in anything I put on the car.
Any suggestions on striping colors for the Granite Green?

Do you have a copy of 'Uploding Photos For Dummies'? I've tried what seems a simple proceedure for most and will try again. Meanwhile, I have posted Pics of mine and another Dark Emerald Green MDX on the Yahoo Club site. Mine (obviously) is the one with a Pinstripe. Check out that photo area (MDX Owners Club) and let me know what you think (good, bad or indifferent).

MDXINFO:

I'm here to help buddy !
When you click on the post reply bottom, it places you in the screen where you can type a response right?
Scroll down a little bit....you'll see a little slot line and a button that says Browse.

Press that Browse button. You can then Browse through your OWN harddrive and double click on your pictures and put the picture from your harddrive right into that little line slot with the Browse button next to it.

Then just save & post your reply and the picture will appear in your post.

It is very simple actually.
Try it...if you are having problems, I can jump in your post as Moderator and try to edit it to work.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I think I know what MDXINFO did wrong...he probably was not in the GALLERY area when he tried to post his pictures. The "browse" option is not available in the other Forums.

BTW...what is the link to the Yahoo site? I registered but couldn't find the pics? Must say Yahoo seems to be more confusing.
When you go to Yahoo...on the left side of the webpage...click PHOTOS.

They are in there !

Good call on the FORUM picture post.
MDXINFO:
Try posting your pictures in the GALLERY with my instructions listed above. I'll help you if needed.

Happy MDX-ing!
Acura4Life...
From your description, the posting proceedure seems the same as any other photo site. For some reason, it didn't work for me...I will make another attempt in the Gallery section. I've posted many a photo on 3 or 4 websites....they were all simple to do. That's why I'm a little baffled by the lack of results here...bear with me and thanks for your offers to help.

MDXINFO - What browser version are you running? You may have to upgrade your IE or Netscape browser.
Here's the Yahoo link to MDXINFO's picks. **hoping it works** Yahoo is a bit confusing because there are several MDX clubs. The pics are in ACURAMDXOWNERSCLUB. Takes a while to load and I have DSL.

I don't have any pictures but Jerry Damson Acura added some pin striping to my Granite Green. It is located on the ridge near the top of the door. In my opinion it makes a big difference in appearance. (there's also a little Acura "A" insignia embedded withn the stripe near the back).

I use Netscape Communicator (current version) or IE 5. I have DSL. I have no problems uploading pics to MSN Communities, Yahoo or Shutterfly. I get no results when I use this site, even though the 'browser' area accepts my picture's address on my hard drive. I'm attemping these posts in the Gallery area...it can't be that difficult... but nothing (picture wise) uploads when I submit the post. Maybe there's a small hitch in my method with this site...??? Is there more that I need to include in the 'browse' window? Do I need to to check or uncheck any of the boxes below...or do I just send you all to the Acura MDX Club on Yahoo where the pictures are posted and look fine?
...Is it possible my picture's file size is too large? If so, what program (ie Picture it, Adobe, etc) works best?

Don't quite know how or why, but uploading a photo has finally worked for me!
Thanks to all that lended advice along the way... especially A4L and THEWORM...and CLAIRE1 for adding the final impetus to give it one more try. Now that I know it works for me I'll add new ones (some of them of MDXs with no known owner). One last question...how does one upload multiple photos at once? Do I simply Hi-lite a group/series of photos and save simaltaneously?
You can't do multiples @ once. Upload the first one in the thread, and when you're automatically taken there, just keep replying to your own msg; 1 photo per post/reply.
Thanks! Now, just one last detail...most photos in 'Gallery' fit the page. Mine was much larger than I wanted...do I need to crop it to a certain size B4 uploading?
I was contemplating an answer to that question before you even asked :) The answer is, I don't know. I imagine the additional width in the gallery is driven by the RESOLUTION of the photo rather than "cropping". I do know that cropping won't change the resolution, but it MIGHT change the pixel width.

It looks like you're using a megapixel camera at full rez. The easiest thing to do is to "save down" resolution from your pic editing program. Check the "save as..." menu options -- that's usually where you'll find it.

I saved mine down to 880x584 (from an original 1760x1168), which fit no problem and still look OK. Bilmat's granite green pics are at 600x321; DallasMDX's are at 640x480 and both are fine quality for the screen viewing.

You should save at 640x480 or thereabouts (the actual numbers available to you will be a divisor of the resolution with which you took the shot, IF you maintain proportions when downsampling; higher than that is relatively meaningless when viewed onscreen.

The other alternative is to set your camera to take lower rez pics -- I'm sure there's an option on it to do so (maybe two, one for rez and one for compression; you'd adjust the rez). Warning: the hi rez is forever lost using this method, so the preferred method is to downsample using a photo editor. Of course, it takes a bit longer...

Wow...that's a lot of info! Thanks professor Worm! I am using a 1.3 megapixel Olympus at full rez. I'll try to save in 880x584 or 640x480 and see if that helps. I don't like shooting in lower resolution generally because I can't always duplicate a shot/moment and I want to know the photo will be as high quality as possible for it's time when I order prints. However, on specific applications, such as this, I will try lower rez shots to compare results...computer images may look to be the same in either resolution as I think you've suggested.
You can go to the picture gallery and see my Black Pinstrip with an Acura Emblem in it.
Yep, that's why best to take all the pics in highest resolution and then just take it down in an editing program...what program are you using for the editing? If it's one I have I can take a look @ the menus...

If you have MS office installed, check start->programs->microsoft office tools->microsoft photo editor.

Open the pic you want to resample/edit, click image->resize, and either resize by pixel measurements or just %. When you save it, it'll save with the new rez.
TheWorm
I have Picture It, Adobe and Camedia (Camera shoftware which I don't use much). We have Office 2000 Pro, but I have not used any of the photo componnents. I'm sure that if I tinker with any of these programs I'll be able to size it right for web posting.

In picture it, after opening the pic, you can click "save print and send" in the left toolbar. Then, click "save as" and select "JPEG or JPG" from the dropdown box where it asks what type to save as. There's a little box underneath the filetype box that says "options". click it to select the save resolution.

I have Picture It v2.0 so your mileage may vary and menus might be different...Microsoft Photo Editor, part of MS Office suite, is faster, if you installed it initially, anyhow.
I had two pinstripes (light tan over medium green) placed along the upper line a few inches below the windows on my emerald green MDX. It really adds to the appearance by drawing out the beige interior and contrasting with the dark green. The painter gave me three options on the driver door which helped me select the best set. Total cost $50 which included a nice crossover tie-in at the front and back edges.
Do you have any Pics posted? I'd like to see them.
