NHTSA has released its side-impact test results for the new 2002 Toyota Camry:
http://www.nhtsa.gov/NCAP/Cars/2089.html
The vehicle tested was not equipped with side airbags (chest-high front side airbags or the front/rear side curtains). It scored 2-stars for the front, 5-stars for the rear.
The previous generation had scored 3/3.
The ES300, equipped with side airbags, had previously scored a 5/4.
A lot of Camry owners are pretty shocked. Though the vehicle was a Good "Best Pick" in the IIHS offset frontal crash test.
Moral of the story: if you're going to buy a Camry, at least get the side airbags (hasn't been tested yet, but it can't be worse in the front). |

I must disagree a had 1992 toyota camry that was assembled in japan in was great. I would say it was the most luxurius car, but it was built excellent and gave me no problems for 10 years. Only went to service for oil change and brakes other than that never really needed service. I changed the water pump and timing belt at the recommended 60,000 miles. It was built with excellent quality quiet and no squeaks or rattles after 10 years and 80,000 miles. I would say they make an excellent vehicle, especially the japan made ones. |
