With the demise of the Poron 3LV, is there another reverse alarm anyone has had experiences with other than a video system?

Here's one I have been looking at:

http://www.12voltshop.com/details.a...at=21&path=1,21

This one is half the price and the indicator is mounted at top rear and you see it in your rear view mirror. But only uses one sensor.

Dale,

Didn't know about the demise of the Poron. The site is still up (www.poronusa.com). Is it all their units (aka the whole company) or just the 3LV model? You could get away w/one of their 2-sensor units no problem.

You might poke your head in over on the Ody site (www.odyclub.com) to see what they've been using. I recall some discussion over there...
DaleB
Yes the site is up. But if you hit 'Specials' or 'Purchase' , etc. you get the ol' 404 screen.

I will try their phone numbers today, and also check the Ody site. Wish I had got a unit earlier. Thanks.

Works for me, maybe they had a hiccup.

Still not working right, I can buy Poron at Autotoys.com

Does anyone have the Poron system working with a trailer hitch installed?
Wongster
I have the ROSS (Rostra Obstacle Sensing System) backup sensor installed. It comes with 2 sensors (mounted behind the bumper), a control unit (brain) with audio alarm (volume adjustable), flashing green-yellow-red visual alarm display, and all harnesses. Work well, reliable and easy to install. However, it DOES NOT work well with a trailer hitch.

Check out their web-site for more information (product info, installation manual, application guide = step-by-step with pictures on how it was installed on a RX300, Ody and other cars.)

I did review that one. I would not want to go through the hassle, especially removing the bumper (cover) and then find out it was not worth it.

I need to get more info on the Poron. Who knows I may end with a camera!
MDXtrous
I'd say, go for the camera:D Time to reward yourself in your retirement right??!!

You can get this mirror for $339:

and this camera:
http://www.savinglots.com/lotprod.asp?item=AV14C

or santeca cdm-301 color camera for $149 from www.lightav.com

or go for BOTH solutions!! Your $99 solution sure is tempting for me... My wife would kill me first though:)

Dale,

Wouldn't be an issue; you'd just position the middle sensor above, below, or just to the side of the hitch.

BTW, call Poron direct before buying from autotoys...they've been offering a $50 or $100 running discount (can't remember which - it's been awhile). Ya just have to ask.

FWIW, you DON'T need to remove the bumper. The 2 ROSS sensors fit well attached on the metal bar right behind the bumper. What I like about the ROSS is that the sensors are not exposed, and there is no need to drill holes on the bumper.

Where did you buy it from?

Hmm I'm confused, I thought you said it did not work well with a hitch.
DaleB
I am going to call Poron and see what they have for specials.
I just got an email back from 12volt Shop..
The $99 unit they have sounds very inviting also. They say hitches are no problem and it's one of the easiest to adapt to any vehicle.

http://www.12voltshop.com/details.a...at=21&path=1,21

This seems like an inexpensive route, and maybe down the road go video and at that time I may want something more than a back-up alarm.
I just want the basic protection it offers over doing a visual and something not requiring lots of time. Eats into my Zaino time...:D

But I really appreciate the info, it does help one make an informed decision.
Wongster
MDXtrous = I bought it from Autosound Plus here in Ottawa, Ontario.
Dale = I don't have a hitch, but it does state in the manual that it will not work well with a hitch.

I did look into Poron and wanted to order one, however there is no distributor in Canada and I had half decent experience in on-line shopping from south of the boarder. ROSS is a good alternative and it works well for me.

Hope it helps. Good luck.
DaleB
Well, I did more research and decided on the 99 dollar job. It's made by a company in Ottawa, Trilogix?
Now you will tell me they suck!
They are the ones that came out with the remote pager alarm system a couple of years ago.
It tells you, remotely of course, if your alarm went off and the method of intrusion, or if an impact set it off....with a time stamp etc...
Actually, I liked the one they had for $49 on sale. Because like the ROSS it has a rear window or ceiling indicator so you can see it whether you are looking at your rear view mirror or turn around.
But it only has one rear sensor. That's a major problem. Finding the best location would really be a compromise.
The one I'm getting has 2 sensors, and a wireless front indicator, audio too of course.
As soon as I get it I will hook it up temporarily with just the sensors mounted to see how well it works with a hitch, etc. Although they claim that has never been an issue.

IF all goes well I will photograph the installation. In the future I will likely get more sophisticated and go for more 'tronics in my X like a camera. After all, Holidays in December and my birthday in Jan. ... and I've been real good! But until then this will provide some peace of mind.

Dale,
Look fwd to seeing your installation. I would have shown you mine if I have a digital camera. I have been on and off shopping for one, but always ended up spending the money on the X. This summer we are planning a family trip to Vancouver, so my digital camera will have to wait (at least) until this fall. :(

I am seriously considering installing a Poron Car Reversing Aid on our MDX since my wife drives it 90% of the time, and once again she backed into something and scratched the rear bumper (for the second time in about 3 months) :3:.

For those currently using the two types of Poron Car Reversing Aids, what are the advantages and/or disadvantages for the one that you use (Micro3 - Voice vs. Mini3 - Digital Display).

I reviewed all related posts, and am leaning more toward the Micro3 - Voice unit. I called Poron (800-869-8866) and was told that this unit costs $179.99 (minus $50 discount if you mention that you found out about Poron through a user newsgroup such as acuramdx.org website) plus $10 for shipping. Is this a reasonable price? Has the Poron system been useful and reliable for those of you using it for a while?

Until I buy the Poron system and get it installed, I guess it is time to take a trip to the dealer for some more touch up paint .
TheWorm
We're still happy w/our micro3 (voice) unit. I'd definitely recommend it. I find it useful when parallel parking and can't see how close the car (sedan/coupe) is behind the X. My wife also has a tendency to backup by feel into cement planter boxes & light posts @ the store. 1 save and it's paid for IMO. Not to mention the safety aspect. Tho we haven't almost run over any kids or bikes, it did save our garbage cans from injury :)

The price u mention (179 - 50) sounds about right. I ordered direct from Poron and had it in a day or two.

I decided not to wait for any more bumper "scars" and "I didn't see it because the car is too big" excuses and just ordered the Micro3 - Voice unit directly from Poron. I should get it in couple days.

I remember reading in one of the previous posts that you used some kind of heat shrink insulation to protect the wires at connection points and that you have some extras. How can I get some of these from you? Please let me know (mgervis@juno.com or PM me). Thanks.

Found out my reverse alarm system is about 2 or 3 weeks away yet, they are back-ordered. (Will have pics of my hitch with my GoRhino hitch step installed by next Thursday.)

That poron micro does sound interesting with the voice, seems easier and as good as the trilogix unit which begs you to install the l.e.d. unit over your rearview mirror, a seemingly minor yet painful wiring job too, and keeping your eyes looking forward instead of backward while you drive backwards......but......do u find the voice ALWAYS being on, and the beeps, is ever annoying? I'd appreciate your input as I move to finalize my choice. Thanks to all responders in advance!
TheWorm
edepa,

The voice and beep are only there when 1) you're in reverse, and 2) there's something within 8' behind you. That combination can't last for too long :)

Not annoying and quite helpful IMO. Still a :29: from me; one of the better accessories we've installed!

FWIW, as I recall there are seperate volume controls for voice and beep, so you could disable one or the other if you really wanted to. We have both enabled.

Does it beep every time you shift into reverse or through it? Does voice come on then too? That could be annoying if it did. thanks for the input! :)

Yes, one short beep as you shift into or through reverse to let you know the unit has powered up. No voice unless there's something back there.

I don't find it annoying. Besides, the radar detector goes through the self test mode (w/beeps & alarm) and the cell phone powers up when I start the car anyway. :D

I've been very happy with my system from the 12voltshop.com since I realigned the sensors. But it really is a bumper mounted system (2 sensors) which for me and using the hitch-step works out just fine. For $89 it's a steal, it does not have the voice like the Poron though, just similar beeps and digital indicator (including which side of vehicle detection is taking place).
Either way, I think these system are almost a necessity. It's important not to let them make you lazy lest you forget to turn your head when backing which is very important.

I think either of these system, and whatever else is out there, are about as good as any factory system, except the integration of the sensors.
When you think about it, how much more could you improve on what they do without going with a video system?

I have a poron micro 3 on order for the acuramdx org price of 129.99 plus 10 for shipping. I was also considering some sort of backup system for my daughter's old civic. There is one offered on ebay called Autopark 2000, single sensor that attaches to license plate frame it seems. Any one know anything about this unit? Is it worth considering? The price is right, but not if it won't work reasonably. Thanks in advance for your input!:)
DaleB
I would try the 12volt shop and go with a 2 sensor system at a minimum. I am sure a one sensor system would work, but lack some range and/or sensitivity to the sides.
I found some links to autopark 2000, you should do some searches before buying from ebay...looks like it's a multisensor unit but the sensors are mounted on the ends of one long thin module that fits under the license plate....

Yup, Dale, it does look like two sensors just so close together I can't imagine its coverage is any different than a single unit. And, I have done some searches too. The nice part is it essentially hangs on the license frame and you can run the wires in through the license lights or just drop a hole thru the deck lid (it is an OLD civic), and the backup lights are on the deck lid, making for a pretty easy install. I can pick it up for less than $30 dollars on some other web sites, and, rear vision on the civic is not too bad even without a sensor. She's such a new driver, I thought an inexpensive easy to add "beep" might be worth a shot. So, if anyone has used the autopark 2000, I'd love to know if it is half way decent.

I installed one of these on our Ford Ranger. Was called the Smartpark 2000 and I think I paid only about $25 for it at Costco a few years ago. I think it works great but the materials are not the best quality, the small screws attaching it to the mounting bracket leave a lot to be desired and mine has cracked but I just patched it with some epoxy and it still works great.

Was thinking of mounting one on the X but didn't want to drill into the body so was trying to devise a way to attach it down at the hitch. Unfortunately Costco doesn't sell them now and it's too cold for me to spend time making it work.

I have the installation guide which I can scan into .pdf format if anyone knows a way for me to attach it or make available to the list. Also will take a picture of the one on the truck - very easy install - took a female only about an hour;)

Thanks much for the heads up, just the confirmation I needed. I'm going to go poron on the mdx, but the autopark 2000 aka smartpark 2000 sounds perfect at its price point for my newly driving daughter's old honda civic.
