I just installed door edge guards today. After doing a bit of research I settled on the ones from trim-gard. The following is the link:
http://www.trim-gard.com/product.php3?Partno=400-50
It's the U-shaped one and the one I got had 50 feet worth of the guard. You can pick which color you want, and I selected number 14 for silver.
I called trim-gard.com and they gave me a local dealer. I called the local dealer and ordered direct for $21.71 + Tax + Shipping. The package came pretty quickly in the attached box: |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
The main reason I got them, was because since I park in a garage, my door has hit the garage wall multiple times on the driver's side in the front and in the back. (There's just very little clearance.) As a result I've gotten some chipping of the paint on the edge of the doors.
Therefore, the installation was to protect from future chips and maybe even preventing any of the doors dinging other cars.
Here's a pic of some of the paint chipped off the door edge on the driver's side. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| As I said the package came with 50 ft. of the material. For $21.71 it was much cheaper than anywhere else. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Here's to give you an idea of the color matching. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| This is what it looks like. Notice the U shape. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Notice that there is a layer of silicone that is used to "glue" onto the door edge. The silicone supposedly does not damage the paint and will come off easily in case the guards need to be removed again. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Better pic to see the silicone. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Here's the before pic of the passenger side back door. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Another before pic |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Initial application. Pretty straight forward, just open it up a bit and press against the door. I cut the tip of the guard, so it will be flush against the top of the door edge with a regular pair of scissors. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Door finished. After pic. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| With door closed. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| The front door was just a bit different. The door edge actually goes up and then across where the window is. Just slightly different. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| The guard is applied accordingly in the front passenger door. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| This is what it looks like with my BSMs. I had no problems sliding the edge guards under the BSM. Since there isn't 3M tape right at the beginning for the BSMs there is enough space for the door edge guard to slide underneath without me having to peal off the BSM even a little. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Side view of two doors with the edge guards. Blends in pretty nicely. Feels like the BSMs in terms of blending. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Hard to tell when looking from further out. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
Here are the scissors I used anytime I needed to cut the guards. Just line up with the edge, and chop...
You see that I have a lot of the guard leftover after I installed all four doors. Anyone interested? I didn't even use half (my guess is about 15 or 16 feet) but I'll sell the remainder for $12 + shipping and ship it in the original box (you can then resell it again:D).
Hope this helps anyone considering door edge guards... |

| Thanks for the step-by-step -- it was fun to read and look at. I'm interested in finding the stuff in a store so I can see what color looks best on Red Rock Pearl. I have a bottle of touch-up paint for now! |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
Here's a link to the color chart:
http://www.trim-gard.com/colors.php3
My guess it's bright red or dark red (that's all the reds:p ) Even if it's just close, it's not the most noticeable item. The silver doesn't match perfectly, but I really had to ask my brother to take an extra look, who also owns an MDX at the door edge guards.
Maybe trim-gard can send you some samples?? |

MDXtrous,
Which one did you get Large or the Narrow one? |
|
|
| denisk |
| Does their 'natural' color (#99) infer that it's 'clear' or just a neutral shade. Ideally, if they offer a 'clear' color it would be even better since it would be unnoticeable after application. |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| It says "Natural (for Paint)". Does sound like it could infer clear. You can try to call them direct. They are very helpful. |

| if only it was simple to pick the matching color for Granite Green from that color scheme: dark green? dark silver? dark charcoal? black??? :8: |

I just called them up and they will be sending me smething that will list the dealers in our area, that will be NJ/NY and sample colors of the door edges. I only need it for the Redrock really but if I get the complete samples, I'll take a picture and post them for everyone to see. I do hope I get them very soon.

I just spoke with them as well. They have a new door-edge product called the 'NC' series (not yet on their website). This product is offered in 'CLEAR' color....so it's transparent. The 400-50 product quoted earlier in this thread is offered in 'Natural' which is more of a beige color, intended for painting.
They are sending me a sample of the new NC product....will take photos and post..... |

| Please let us know who the dealers are - especially if they are national chains. I'm also interested in RR, and would very much like to get a sample to see how the dark red looks. |

As you know, they're based in Ontario, Canada. My understanding is that we can order mouldings directly. If you'd prefer not to DIY, I will check with them as to who can install for you here. Most qualified body shops can also install the moudings for you as well.
It appears they're also looking for a 'candidate' MDX install photo for their website, but I believe this is for the BSM product set as opposed to the door-edge-guards. |

You absolutely should not have to have someone install it for you. I hope my instructions have been clear, but I cannot emphasize how easy it is. It is just a matter of pushing the guard against the door edges, and it snaps right in. It's much much simpler than installing BSMs. Then all you have to do is cut the guard once you've reached the end of the door. If you try it, you'll know it's easy. This is coming from someone that is NOT a DIYer.
I hope I don't sound too excited;) Just looking out for you guys:D |

| My salesman at Concord Acura had these (matching color) installed when I picked up my X. Said that they were a $200 value ( !!-yeah, right). They did the door edge and wheel well edge. The wheel well edge trim might prevent some damage from errant doors in parking lots. |

| If anyone is thinking just installing the black ones or even chrome and gold (plasticky), PEP boys have them for less than $10 bucks.:4: |

Hmm, good idea, maybe I can try it out. I've got so much leftover... |

MDXtrous, what's the purpouse of these things?
If you still have those leftovers, I can swing them from you , I guess, if I can figure out the benefits.

For the meantime, I did buy the one from PEP BOYS. They have a Red door edge but it was only about 3 feet long and doesnt cover the entire door. It was 2.99 a pair I think. I bought it nevertheless for the meantime to protect the door as it hits the garage walls. I'll replace when the trim-gard ones comes in.
Will it be difficult to remove an existing one? I know it has some adhesive and I don't know whether I have to follow some instructions first before I remove it. Anybody???
 |

vip9,
I got mine for a very real need. I have a fairly narrow garage space (well, not really, I just don't want to park too close to the next guy), so, I park very close to the wall. What ends up happening, is I bang (gently) against the wall sometimes when I open the driver and passenger doors on the left side. I had chipped off some paint on the door edges already. So I got these to protect the doors from further damage. That's one benefit. The second benefit, is I can see it having less of a chance in producing a dent on someone else's car if you accidentally swing your door opened.
Those are the benefits. |

MDXtrous,
Re Use for Wheel Wells: Sound good but I believe that you will find that there is no lip to mount to!! So, won't work here. Too bad too!! I just went to the website hoping that they offered color coordinated wheel well molding but NOPE -- could only find black and chrome. :(
Re Selling Leftover: You might want to keep the edge moldings. My experience with similar products is that I eventually "bump them off" [e.g. while waxing the vehicle]. Once this happens, the "glue" doesn't re-adhear and eventually I have found that I need to replace them. Since it is a small package and you are happy with the product, you might simply just want to put it on a shelf for later!! |

MDXtrous,
I just finished installing door edge guards on my MDX. I used to have black on my MDX, but the color-matched white is a 100% improvement. Thanks for your detailed, step-by-step instructions. I contacted http://www.trim-gard.com like you said. They referred me to a dealer in Riverside, CA. I called Marie at (800) 854-6101 and she took my order. It was $22.27 + $13.80 S & H = $37.80. It's only money, right? I had enough to do four cars. Luckily, they were all white. Thanks again for the great post. Picture to follow. |

Excalibur,
That looks really nice!! Especially along with your Body Side Mouldings. Mine is holding up well and helping especially with my driver's side door, which gets quite a lot of bumps against the garage wall (very tight space), but I don't have to worry because the guards are there.
Really happy it's worked out for you.

MDXtrous,
You are too kind. As you mentioned earlier, the primary reason I installed the door edge guards is to protect my MDX. I often have to park in tight office building parking lots where my door would have to open up against a wall or a pole. The door edge guards do an excellent job of protecting the paint on my doors from getting chipped. The color matching is an added bonus. I like the way they look. Thank you once again! |

Impressive. Damn. Now I really can procrastinate anymore regarding purchasing the molding. It just looks too good and makes a lot of sense.
I guess I'll make that call next week.
Thanks for the Pic!

Go for it! It is a very simple project and a lot of fun. The tips given here on the board are great. Just trying to do my part in sharing. |

andrewPDX,
I used to have black door edge guards on my MDX. They had that silicone glue in the channel. They didn't look that bad. But than again, I have a TW MDX. I am thinking black door edge guards would look excellent on a NBP MDX. |

2002 Acura MDX!,
Since you have a silver MDX, it would be simpler to call http://www.trim-gard.com and order the silver door edge guards just like MDXtrous who started this thread. Don't bother with trying to paint or color your chrome door edge guards. It is not worth the trouble. |

Well, Vip, I do hope you liked the benefits, as i forgot to ask you how you liked them this morning when we met. I'll be the third off MDXtrous's roll of molding to install them on the my silver X. Three must be a charm, right? I'll post how I like them when I'm finished putting them on, but thanks MDXtrous for the postings, makes the process appear straightforward, and thanks VIP for foisting these high priced moldings on me, yes, those bills were in small denominations and unmarked.:2: |

benefits are enormous!!! Plus, add to that that I actually made a profit re-selling Mdxtrous' stuff :D

Sorry, MDXtrous, but I would have thought with you being the first to get and write about these moldings, you would have had the "edge" protected for yourself!:2: I'll let you all know how it looks after I put it on the X this weekend. :) |

Noooooo.....these days it is more important to have protection! |
|
|

But to get that kind of protection, you can't simply guard the edge. You need that 3M stoneguard stuff which you use to cover the whole front of the thing, oops, meant vehicle. The part of this that I find troubling is that everyone suggests installation by a pro.

well, i'm protected now! or at least my X is. Here's part of my email to vip9, who gouged me for five bucks(plus i had to travel miles and miles to get them too::D
) for the balance of MDXtrous's edge guards::D
(VIP9), yes I did(have enuf molding), and at least a couple feet to spare! I did have to trim one side to fit the bsm's, as one I guess was more snug to the door and the molding wouldn't go under it. I used a single edge blade primarily to trim after I put each piece on. At first I noticed the moldings and wondered if I'd like them....by the end of the day I hardly saw they are on. So, all in all it worked out great, thanks for asking. BTW, I don't know if you got a navi or not, I hadn't. I bought one of the Garmin StreetPilot 3 deluxe units and I have to say it is marvelous. I'm still in the toy mode, but it has been terrific. Fits right on the console once i took the coin tray out, and the screen size is fine, I mostly go by the voice prompts anyhow. I'll keep a post on the .org board for it as I get to know the unit better.
Again, thanks for the moldings, and nice to meet you. Ed |

Hey MDXtrous,
Thanks for the Trim Guard tip. Just received the product and it called for putting masking tape on the door before applying the u-shape guard. Did you do this or you just applied the guard without the tape.
Thanks,

the door edge guard doesn't require any sort of masking tape...it just pushes on, easy as pie. The masking might be for a generic body side molding...the specific one from acura (i.e. tim) comes with a paper guide you tape to the door which then exactly shows where to place the bsm's. Good luck, but the door edge guards are cake! :) |
|
|
| MDXtrous |
| Like edepa said, if you got the U-shaped one, you don't need the tape. You can't really go wrong by just snapping it in. There's no alignment, because all you're doing is "covering" the door edges. |
