CD Changer Skipping - Click HERE for Original Thread

Picked up our new EG/Tour/Navi yesterday. We love the color (had only seen it at night before) and it rides like a charm.

Our main frustration was that our CD changer skipped so frequently that we had to resort to (mediocre) local radio again. It happened with all 3 disks loaded into the changer for our 150 mile drive back from the dealer. One CD seemed to be smudged slightly (though it was lifted straight from my home CD changer where it played flawlessly). The others appeared to look great. They were all CDs purchased in the last month, loaded into a home megachanger, and otherwise untouched.

Has any one else had problems with this? It's a big bummer, since all I want to do is drive, and there appears to be nothing better than cruising down the road in a new car with your favorite music playing!
My GG w/ touring and nav has never skipped on a CD, in about 2000 miles of normal driving.
I had no problems initially with CD's skipping, but on one trip the CD player skipped frequently. I contacted the dealer for a replacement unit. The service manager asked if I was playing home made disks or store bought. These discs happened to be home made (74 min. type). He said that for some reason the player has difficulty with home made discs, which I thought was ridiculous because they played fine in my other car. I tried some store bought discs and couldn't get them to skip. I then tried some 80 min. homemade discs they worked fine.
Thanks for the feedback. All three discs I tried were nearly new (bought, not burned). I tried another one today--2nd song in, same result. I bought my MDX out of town, but called a local dealer and will try to take it in tomorrow. I'm expecting a new head unit if there isn't a simple fix (not a reconditioned unit, as the warranty manual says is possible) given that we had less than 30 miles on the MDX when we first noticed the trouble.

I'll keep you posted!

So...to update the CD changer story:

I took it into a local dealer, where the service manager tried hard to convince me that it was my discs that were at fault. True--he demonstrated that all the discs I brought (purchased within the last month) all had flaws (some smudges, some scratches). He even proved that his test disc (Dean Martin's Greatest, or something) didn't skip, even on a bumpy road. But when I asked him to test my "bad" discs in their showroom base MDX...voila, no skipping! He then agreed to order a new changer, my point about poor tolerance to skipping having been proven, even if my new (but flawed) discs were partly at fault.
Unfortunately, it's on "back order" and I'm waiting.

Funny...we were in Colorado last week, renting a Suzuki Grand Vitaro (it's no MDX) to head from Denver to the slopes. I played the same U2 disc (All that you can't leave behind...) that skipped regularly in my changer and it played cleanly in the Suzuki, even in 4WD over bumpy icy roads. Should I expect any less from a new MDX?

I'll let you know when it's fixed!

We've had a nightmare time with the CD Changer. After about 1000 miles it no longer let you select disc 4 or 5. My wife called the dealer who said that one would be ordered. Over a month went by and no one called us back. She called and was told they would look into it and call her back. They never did. Finally she found that a new one was in. She made an appointment to have it put in. It took them over three hours to put it in and it didn't work. They had her wait another half hour and got it working. That was yesterday. Today we discovered that they didn't put it in straight and that this unit suffers from much worse problems. It skips and when you try to eject a cd it just says error and powers off. We're not happy with the player or the dealer (which is Acura in Vadnais Heights, MN).
Well--good news and bad news about my CD changer. First, I dropped the MDX off this morning, and was given an Integra loaner. No problem there (though I hoped to test-drive a TL for the day). They told me that it would take a couple of hours, max, so I planned to take off at lunch to pick up the SUV.

No calls--finally, at 4:15, I call and am told that they're finishing up! I drive in (at 5) and at 5:30 one of the service guys tries to hand back the key to the loaner car (without further explanation)! I demanded an explanation, and a few minutes later the service manager then came out and explained that the car would be done shortly, and sure enough, it was.

We drove off, popped some CDs in the car, and were pleased to hear no skipping! We're almost home...things are fine...until we looked closely at the dash around the radio controls. Then, we're shocked to see fine, but definitely noticeable, scrapes (so that under the dark sable, we see some white) in around 3 places, like a screwdriver or something scratched off the surface of the dash material! It's subtle, and if I were buying a used car, I probably wouldn't care, but the car's nearly new!

I called the service department, and the service manager is gone (out until Wednesday) but I'm going to scream bloody murder unless they repair the dash! Once again, I'm not exactly blown over by this service episode. Stay tuned!

At least I have a CD changer that works (finally!!!) FYI, I was given a new radio code, so I assume that the changer can't be replaced without the whole unit being switched.

LeeBlue - another MN MDX owner!!! I'm estatic, I'm not alone here after all!

I got mine from Buerkle Acura back in November. The 4&5 button problem appeared in January - it took them about 3 weeks to get a new unit. I mentioned the installation problems that other folks have noted (both MesaBeige and now KK have had their dashes scratched). The service manager their noted they were a bear to install. They gave us a loaner, and when we came back the CD player was replaced flawlessly, I got the free oil change they threw in when I bought it, and a threw in a complimentary car wash.

I can't say enough good things about Buerkle; if you're having trouble with the Vadnais folks, I suggest giving them a try.

Good luck!

Ghost,

I am going to take you up on your idea and go to your dealer. I still do not have a replacement and now no CDs will play. I almost bought our MDX from them but got annoyed at their snobery on the "10 minute" test drive. I live out in Wisconsin so the drive is about the same.

Hmm.. must depend on who you get, I had a young guy, he must have still felt like he had to be decent to people... Fritz and Jeff in the service dept have been good eggs.

BTW, checked out your web site, can't believe you work on bootstraping for non-metrics, I hang out in the multivariate realm myself, mostly in redundancy analysis & dabbling in neural nets. Cool!
ghost: Thanks for the info about MesaBeige getting his dash scratched--I'll have to find that thread.

BTW, I'm a Minnesotan, too! Well, I actually haven't lived there for 10 years now, but I did grow up there, and still root (painfully) for the Vikings.

leeblue--better luck than I have had thus far! You certainly shouldn't feel tied to one dealer, and ghost's suggestion is a good one.
The story just keeps getting worst. I called up the service department at White Bear Acura before calling the other dealer because they were supposed to have a CD Changer on order for us (for the last month or so). Even though we spoke to the service manager as well as the person who put the last changer in when we dicovered the new problem and was told that another one would be ordered, parts has no record of the order and "will call me back". I will be amazed if I here from them today. I'm going to take the problem higher up. I keep getting all this fluff mail from Acura thanking us for purchasing their product with the "if there is anything we can do line". I'll put it to the test.

KK: Yeah, the Vikings were having a pretty good season, up until the point where they THREW IT ALL AWAY!

But you think rooting for the Vikings is tough, I'm originally from Cleveland and a Browns fan - except they moved out of town - and then take the Superbowl! Give me a break.

Here's a typical Cleveland joke:

Q: You are with Saddam Hussein, Momar Kadaffi, and Art Modell, and have a gun with two bullets - who do you shoot?

A: Art Modell, twice

But I'm off topic, just hoping you and LeeBlue are getting your CD issues resolved... Drop us a note when you have something...

(My first post ... hope I am doing this correctly.) I wonder if KK or anyone else who had their CD changer replaced, and who experienced damage to their dash as a result, can advise on how their dealers addressed this. My CD changer was recently replaced, and the dash similarly damaged. I am waiting to hear from the dealer as to how it will be fixed. They seem fully willing to take care of it, but not sure how to do it. It looks to me like the dash is one piece, so that replacement would be a huge job. Thanks in advance for any advice (but I don't need anyone to advise me that I should never have bought the Bose in the first place!)
wait4mdx:

I was quite busy, and then the service manager was out of town following my discovery of the scratches around the CD cutout. I, too, am concerned since it does appear that replacement of a large part of the dash might be very costly. Can anyone in the know (Tim, are you out there) tell me what happens from a reimbursement perspective when such damage occurs. Does American Honda pick up the tab for a botched repair like this? Or does the individual dealer handle it? If the latter, I suspect I may be in for some resistance, given that the damage is only cosmetic, and relatively minor. On the other hand, I still find it completely unacceptable, given the age and cost of the vehicle.

In any case, I spoke to the service manager who said that I should bring it in for him to examine. He was nice enough on the phone, and I'll post again after I hear his response.
Thanks, KK. I'll keep you advised via this thread on any developments as well. Frankly, costs & warranty issues aside, I am not anxious to have the dash (or a big chunk of it) replaced. Sounds like an invitation to problems. I'm hoping that there is some other repair option.

Had a 6 CD changer added to my base MDX on delivery Fenruary 28. (Only waited 7 days from date ordered).

Everything in the changer skips. New, old , homemade or straight from SONY.

Haven;t broughgt it back yet, (too busy enjoying the truck) bit based on other postings, not looking forward to the experience.

To update my experience, I showed the scratches adjacent to the CD/radio cutout to the service manager. He's going to put me in touch with a guy who specializes in dash repairs on high-end cars. Since the scratches basically have rubbed off the top layer of vinyl, exposing the whitish material underneath, I suppose that some fine application of the appropriate color might repair the scratches and not be noticeable. I think this would be preferable to the wait and anguish related to replacing the entire dash. Since the imperfections are small, I'm also guessing this should be possible.

Good luck to those with similar problems.
After reading your thread for the first time, I'm wondering if this is the cause of my small dash burble just to the left of the PUSH TO SELECT phrase. Seems like they needed to pop the casing for something and left a small scratch on the casing and a small nick in the dash material. The factory tried to repair the dash material with some touchup paint...but left an awkward drip. I brought this to their attention and they will do another repair and install another face plate. I definitely do not want my entire dash replaced or I'll be chasing rattles forever.
I just had my 7,500 mile service done. While the MDX was there, the dealer had someone who specializes in repairing auto trim fix the damage to the dash around radio/cd player. It worked! Looks like new. The service writer mentioned that Acura now provides a tool for pulling off the trim around the radio which the dealers did not have a number of months ago.
