I found a list of TSB's for the MDX at www.nhtsa.dot.gov
They also have all other autos that can be searched by year and make.

Thanks, some of us have been using that site for a while. Have you found any way to cross-reference the TSBs on that site with Acura's TSBs? I approached my Acura dealer with the informaton about the driver's seat back (301001) and they couldn't find anything about it. I don't want to pay to ge the TSB from NHTSA -- too cheap, I guess!

I didnt pay for the reports , I checked Tims site but he did did not have all of them. Will check for other sites and if they have more information I will post them. If you mention to the dealer that you have a problem and mention you know about the TSB,( they dont like it that we know) but they will fix the problem.

I did tell them about the TSB, but they denied that there is one for this problem. So I called Acura and they couldn't find it either. I wonder if there's a mistake on the site.

I guess that is possible, however they replaced my pass side seat rails under warranty and will be changing drivers side on Fri. I'll ask them to see if I get a diff answer and let you know.

There must be a mistake on the NHTSA site...Tim wasn't able to track it down either -- either as a TSB or as a blurb in their monthly newsletters...

Fortunately (sort of) it's been fixed on enough X's that at least we know what parts to replace :)

Thanks for the 'validation.' I have been wondering if anyone else thought it was a mistake. I know the dealer will fix it with or without a TSB, I have been curious about this supposed TSB.

Hey ... some dealers [like mine] didn't know about the change in the 2002 manual regarding oil weight:

5W30 -- 2001 Manual
5W20 -- 2002 Early Models Manual
5W30 -- 2002 Later Models Manual

Seems like Honda has a problem communicating to its dealers. A real shame when the customers know more about taking care of and/or fixing the vehicle than the dealer!!!

srpbep..

So what should the oil be for a 2002?????? I did not know the
manual had changed the oil requirement from 5W20 to 5W30 for 2002.
I am now confused too!!!

VA Tech Hokie,

I have NOT spoken with Acura Corporate but here is what I do know:

(1) 2001 X Owner's Manual called for 5W30, additionally oil filler cap stipulated 5W30 -- same vehicle, same info.

(2) EARLY 2002 X Owner's Manual called for 5W20; HOWEVER oil filter cap stipulated 5W30 -- same vehicle, CONFLICTING INFO.

(3) LATE 2002 X Owner's Manual called for 5W30; additionally oil filter cap stipulated 5W30 -- same vehicle, same info.

So I am going with 5W30 for the following reasons:

(1) Only vehicle with conflicting info was early 2002.

(2) Dealer said that there are NO ENGINE CHANGES between 2001, early 2002, and late 2002.

(3) Sure appears to me that Acura made a boo boo in the early 2002 owner's manual.

Hope that helps ... Steven

In my opinion, the difference between 5W20 and 5W30 doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Since we all know that the engine didn't change, my opinion is that the oil rating change was for CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy). It takes less fuel to push a thinner oil through an engine. Again, this is my personal opinion and may have absolutely no basis in fact :p

Thanks, Steven and Tim...

I have a 2002, built in November. My manual does recommend 5W20 and
the dealer did use 5W20 for my first oil change. It is now time
for the 2nd one and the statment about the later 2002 manuals
recommending 5W30 caught my eye. Guess I will see what the
dealer has to say about this also.... Thanks again...

There has been some discussion about what weight oil to use
in the MDX. With the service manual recommending 5W30 for the 2001,
then recommending 5W20 for the early 2002 model and then going back
to 5W30 for the later 2002 model, I was concerned about what I actually
should use in my 2002. Today, when I asked the service advisor, he took
me into the service area and there they had a large board, showing the
oil to use for specific vehicles. The board showed 5W30 for all MDXs
and the service tech said I should use what is on the oil cap, which
is of course 5W30. So my first oil change was a 5W20 change
and the one today was 5W30, so guess I will stick with the 5W30
for now. As Tim mentioned, there is not much difference between 5W20 and 5W30, so I think either should work just fine.

My service experience with my dealer has been excellent. The service
advisor is good and they get my car in and out very quickly in the same
physical condition as it arrived(always with a requested "Don't Wash").
I have had two oil changes and the vtm fluid changed. Also, when the MDX
was just a few months old, I had to replace the rear passenger
door window, because a lawn service threw a rock thru it. I also had to replace
the rear door panel, because as the chunks of glass feel on the inside of the suv,
the door panel was cut and damaged. I know this is probably not
the best thread for this topic, but since the oil weight was mentioned
earlier in this thread, this is where my comments have landed...

Same here. My dealer told me the same thing, "Always use what is on the oil cap. It's more likely to misprint an Owners Manual then to use the incorrect oil cap"
