g'day all, as a current honda s2000 owner in australia, i became aware of the mdx through the local channels. anyway, my brother currently owns a jeep gc ltd with the 4.7l v8. it is a good car, pity about the build quality though, numerous problems that i dont care to mention (rattles, tailshaft problems, climate control module breakdowns, heated seat failures, etc, etc). he is looking at upgrading and is looking hard at the x5 4.4l.
my question is what about the mdx is great and what are some of the recurring problems that have been encountered. i understand that there is a rumoured power increase, the mdx is due in australia late 2003.
fyi, s2000 sells for aud$80000, and the x5 sells for about $125000. a civic goes for about aud$25/30000. so going by the US prices of s2000 at us$32k and mdx at us$40k, then it will be about $100k oz dollars, hmmmm
i know that it has sat nav, a crap bose stereo 17" rims, heated seats, power everything, but what else that is different.
looking forward to its appearance and a final decision will be made after it arrives.

When it gets there, drive it -- that may tell you all you need to know. It's a motor vehicle, and therefore it's not perfect. It is, however, a lot better than most of its competition. When you've had a chance to try it, let us know what you think.

g'day or g'evening back to you.

First of all, read through all the posts in this forum. If it isn't covered here then, well I just don't know. Every thing real and imagined seems to have been covered here.

Secondly where are you? In a city area like Sydney you should love the X. In the outback - No! This is a luxury vehicle that only thinks it's a rugged off the roader. Light off road use, sure.

Lastly are they going to put the steering wheel on the wrong side for you blokes? :2:

Hi- I own a 2002 MDX (touring) and a base 2001 MDX. I also own an S2000. Having just returned from down under, i have a few thoughts for you. We spent time touring South Australia (Flinders Ranges, Fleurieu peninsula etc.) in a Toyota Land Cruiser, and I can tell you that the MDX would have easily handled all the trails we drove, even the most rugged "4WD Only" trails. Furthermore, the MDX will offer much more comfort and luxury than in the TLC.

Glad to hear Acura is making its way down under!

it will be in sydney, no offroad use, i actually owned a 60 series tlc sahara, bought it new in '88, had it for 11 years, didnt miss a beat, but upgraded to the jeep
it will be a honda, not acura though. honda is actually well respected in australia, unlike in the USA where it is seen upon quite lowly from what i understand

Everything you love about your S2000 (handling, speed, value) is tranferable to the MDX with the added luxury items (S2K's are great but they are rather spartan unless you add Rick's stuff). It has a larger interior volume than the X5 and rides slightly better. The X5 is faster with the 4.4 engine and does handle better in racetrack conditions.

The MDX is the perfect balance of luxury, performance and value on the market today. The only off road conditions I think it would have trouble with would be heavy deep mud or true goat path rock climbing where you need a low speed transfer case. Also although the Bose system is not the best available, it does have a deep bass line than the sound system in my BMW 740i.

We love ours!

By the way check out www.S2Ki.com for a great online community about S2000's.
