I have been saving to get the MDX and the only one I can afford is the base with no-nave. Shame!!! I really regret not getting the Navi and now have been sleepless with my decision. Anyway I can replace the LCD Trip Screen with a Navi screen?
I know that there are other options such as the in-dash from Alpine. I just want to find out if anyone had replaced the Trip LCD with a navi screen. Thanks. |

| You may end up spending quite a lot even if you are able to find a Navi LCD and unit from the junkyard. I've heard upwards of $3000 or more. I'd go for an aftermarket unit. Some of those screens can also also serve as DVD/TVs... |

Thanks MDXtrous, I kinda knew that was the case.
Here's what I want to be able to do with my MDX...:4:
Have an Alpine Navi system under front Pass seat with an Alpine pop-up monitor and DVD player to replace the stock radio. A flip-down monitor for rear pass with 2 wireless headphones for DVD movies and Games.
I know the manuf cost on the item, however, the guys at Mobile Fantasy was gonna charge me $6k for everything.
Is this something an average, well, below average Schmoe can do by themselves? Or do they have to be like someone like yourself? :D |

Lots of people are very happy with the Garmin Street Pilot III.
Lots of bang for the buck plus you can take it from one car to another. Good little system. |

I also bought my MDX without NAVI and had some regrets at first (although no sleepless nights). I would definitely suggest the Streetpilot III, it has (in some cases) even better capabilities than the Acura system. The best benefit is that it can be moved from one vehicle to another. I use mine in both my MDX and my 3.2TL and it works great:29: |

CountDrAcura,
Just as a reference for pricing, I paid about $1800 for my installation, about $1,000 for converter for Navi screen, TV Tuner, DVD player, rear flip-down screen, power inverter, backup camera, and about $800 in installation for all those items. Hope this helps. The Garmin also sounds really good, and it's pretty compact. |

MDXtrous,
I have a quick Q? for ya....
Would you know if I rip off the trip computer LCD and replace it with a new monitor for video and navi output, will I still be able to feed the A/C and trip info on the new monitor? I think it might work since this is being done with the OEM Navi, right?
Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer this:)

| I use my Garmin eTrex Vista propped up on the dash board -- not too easy to 'play around with' while driving, but it has tons of info built into it, like all the exits on any interstate and distances to all cities, etc. I also hook it up to my laptop and it can track my route while driving and then I have all the features of the mapping software on the computer. I can plan my route and then track it. One advantage is that I can do all the planning in the house or the hotel room the day or night before leaving, and then all I have to do is plug the eTrex into it in the car and follow the route. One disadvantage is the laptop doesn't have a convenient place to sit so the driver can see it, so you need a co-pilot. |

| Hey DRAcura. Let us know if you find out about the a/c and trip info. I too have the base MDX and I wondered about that myself. I went with an indash screen to replace the factory but, my first thought was to replace the screen with a nice flat screen and go from there. Sounds like an awesome plan. What would really be awesome is if you could find a touchscreen that would control all the functions of a navi unit and dvd player. I do not know if one even exists but that would be cool. I know the new Eclipse stuff, you can get with voice control. Good luck. |

The non-navi screen uses a whole different controller. It is NOT a simple task to get this to work with an A/V screen. It would require total re-engineering. You'd need an electronics genius to custom build the interface OR spend a HUGE mound of cash to buy the parts from Acura -- I suspect that there are electronic hobbyist types that could get the parts cheaply from a totally MDX and then re-jigger everything, but would you really want to do this to your mostly brand new vehicle???
The A/C & Trip computer is using a basic "permanently etched" display while th Nav system is basically a computer monitor. True, the data is the same, but the interface is TOTALLY different.
Now, when somebody uses the NAV screen for DVD they need a adapter to convert TV type signals to computer monitor signals, while not SUPER common, such things exist in various places for home & business.
The "dedicated display to computer monitor" is simply something that does not exist as an off the shelf product...
sorry
