Running power to new amp - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a question for those of you who installed an aftermarket amp: where did you run the power from the battery to inside the car? My old Integra had several obvious holes in the firewall that could be used for that purpose but the MDX looks a lot less friendly when it comes to that, thanks to a very clean design. I really don't want to drill a hole because I wouldn't know what I'm doing. I saw a harness going into the passenger side but it goes in so tight that there is no space to add an 8-gauge power wire. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Can someone point me to a good location in the firwall?

Kanuck,
If you can wait about one week I'll have an answer for you. My X is going into the shop on Friday for a custom A/V install including running a 4 (?) guage power line from the battery to a capacitor, power distribution center and 3 amps in the headrest storage area. They are estimating about one week so I should know the location in the firewall by the middle of next week.

Thanks R Stevens. Sounds like you are getting something awesome installed in your X! Hope to hear more about it...

I was thinking yesterday that if I only want to install a 300W amp, I would probably need just around 300W / 12~14V = max 25A circuit for the amp so why can't I just find an empty pod on the electrical bus *inside* the car? Anyone ever tried that? There would probably be some noise concerns but nothing a good size capacitor couldn't fix. Is it essential to go straight to the battery?

Kanuck...If I remember right, I ran my 4 gauge cable in thru a factory grommet just left of the steering colum. I am pretty sure it was the same place a large cable bundle went thru into the engine. I just slit the grommet slightly and slipped the wire thru. That was actually the easy part. The hard part was then getting the cable all the way to the back of the vehicle and into the headrest storage. It took me longer to run all my cables than it did to install all of my components, hehe. Hope this helps. If you need more specifics, I can look at the wife's MDX tonight and see.

I had amp installed and ran the power cord (4 gauge) down the left side of the vehicle. After everything was complete, they discovered that there was some sort of interference and there was a terrible whining noise that would not go away. Finally, they rerouted the power to go down the center of the vehicle and the interference was all gone. Hope this helps.

thanks slackass. i'll check it out later to see if i can find the spot you are talking about. i plan on running everything inside the center console like you suggested and put the new amp under the drivers seat. any chance it will pick up interference in that spot? the only thing i can think of is the heated seat but i don't think that would create noise...

I am not sure about the noise. I would suggest just trying it. It should be fine. As long as you do not run the power and rca right next to each other, you should be ok. Let us know how it goes.
