We currently own a 1999 Audi A4 1.8T which just ran out of it's 3yr/48000mi free maintenance. I've never owned a car that came with free maintenance so it was quite a refreshing experience. I believe the X5 also has 3yrs of free maintenance, correct? I'm on the list waiting for a 2003 MDX and this will be my first SUV. Anyone can help answer what can I expect to shell out for maintenance for say 7yrs? I'm hoping to keep the car for at least 7yrs if there are no major problems. Thanks.

Sorry, the only free maintenance deals have been with specific dealer incentives.
Others who have been on here longer, and accumulated more miles should be able to give you a rough estimate of projected maintenance cost.

OT: what in the world is that avatar? looks like a chicken and some booze?

A rubber chicken and a bottle of scotch?
This is getting too weird for me...

. . . chicken ??? you senior members are staring too hard at the monitor . . . it's a dog (beagle maybe) passed out on it's back on top of newspapers (racing form maybe) near a bottle of liquor (Johnny walker red maybe) a pack of cigs (looks like Marlboro lights) and an ashtray . . . all in a days work up in the city by the bay . . .

The maintenance wasn't free on your Audi. It was part of the original cost of the car that you paid for upfront.

BTW, back on topic...I'd figure a few hundred bucks a yr for maintenance. Dunno if the Audi "free" maint is the same as on the BMW and MB, but on those it's only "free" when the dash light says you should go in. I know a fair number of owners prefer to have maintenance (esp oil _ tranny fluid changes) done more frequently than the light might tell ya to.

Back OT: maybe that's actually a pic of henry at work. He's a bookie. And really needs some sun :)

It's gonna depend on how good a shopper you are.

I figured the standard maintenance up to 105k

Looking at the Standard Maintenance Schedule these are the services:

Number of Times low cost High Cost
Type A 13 40 80
Type B 7 100 250
Type C 3 120 240
VTM4 Service 4 75 100
ATF Service 3 75 150
Valves 1 200 300
Plugs 1 150 250
Timing Belt 1 600 750

THESE ARE MY WILD ASSED GUESSES. I do my own, so I don't have a good handle on what your dealer will charge. Also, the last 3 items are at 105k, and I have no idea what the 'book time' is.

Multiply these out:

Low = 3055
High = 5660

And this all assumes that the inspections find nothing wrong: no worn belts, NO BRAKES ARE INCLUDED (Surely another $100+), no shocks, no CV joint boots, etc.

I'd guess severe service is probably (almost) double. Essentially the frequency doubles (mileage interval is halved).

5 cents per mile for 100,000 miles is $5k.

Food for thought.

Ard

PS Henry- Keep in mind that the 48,000 mile maintenance on the X consists of two vtms, one ATF, three B, one C and 6-A (a "low" of $885 and a "high" of $1820) the cost to your dealer (assuming the TT had this done) was around $300, and look how much other 'not free' stuff he found, eh?
