Colors.. - Click HERE for Original Thread

Anybody have a clue why Acura doesn't offer more ( or better!) colors. IMHO the beige and Mahagaony are kind of hideous.(Although I have not seen them anywhere other than the brochure). Why didn't they make a White? Seems simple doesn't it? Damn, I'd love to have a white MDX.
Well this is Acura's first suv ever and they wanted to keep things simple. As for a short list for colors it could be because the plant which the MDX is built at is working at full capacity making 120 000 Odyssey's a year plus 40 000 MDX's a year and Honda doesn't have the resourses to make a bigger painting place. Also if they add all the colors now, what are they going to use down the road to attract new buyers when the MDX is in need of a re-design? The CR-V first came out with only 5 colors. Now it has 7 colors, with 4 new ones.

So give it sometime, Acura will come out with a few more colors.

Thanks
Evan
I agree Acura probably wanted to keep it simple the first year. White would be OK. We would have liked a Navy Blue metallic but just watch them add these over the next few years.
i too wish other colors like pearl white, navy blue or a red were available. but since there not i ordered black. i originally ordered granite green, but have since redone my order to a black on black base with navi. i should be getting my mdx the 1st week of june

On Edmunds, someone quoted a dealer as claiming that the 2002 MDX will offer white and firepepper red.

As the previous poster mentioned, Acura usually starts with limited colors and adds a couple or more later on.
I phoned a custom paint shop to inquire about pearl white. Hmmmm....got an extra 4-5K? Anyway, I had to ASK. My favorite colors are pearl white and metalic navy with cream interior.
Well, I got the VIN number and was told mine would be in in about 2 weeks. I was traveling on business and got a call 3 days after I left that it was in and if I didn't come in and pick it up they were going to sell it that weekend. :( And they did. To make matters worse, MY salesman was the guy who couldn't wait for me to get back on Monday and he sold it on Sunday! needless to say, I am NOT a happy camper.
so... I just recerived a call from him today telling me they have a GG coming in in about 4 days and they'll put my name on that one - after waiting 6 weeks for SS, I'd like to tell them where they can put their GG. I'm ready to go get my deposit back, go to a different dealer and wait for a pearl white 2002. :( :( :(

What do you guys think?

Liberty
That absolutely stinks! Here's what I'd do (and did):

Post the sheister's (uh, I mean dealer's) name so we all know whom to avoid.

Tell him you're calling the BBB and local news stations to complain about him unless he works you a super deal on the GG. If he doesn't, tell him where to stick it and call some other dealers -- including out-of-state.

Call Acura Client Services in the event that they actually care about this sort of behavior.

Bummer. Sounds like the dealer was trying to get it off the lot to improve his March sales numbers. If you had a deposit down, I'd definitely make noise with the General Manager (not the Sales Manager) and Acura. The thing that strikes me is that they were so brazen about it. From previous posts it sounds like a lot of dealers are "playing" with the waiting list but no one has been able to confirm it.
Oh bummer... I assume you returned his call prior to the weekend? If you didn't...and I don't mean to defend dealers in this climate....but...there are many customers with multiple deposits and he might have thought you were not interested. The key here is, did you return his call and tell him you'd be back in town on Monday and to hold the MDX? If you called prior to the sale...I'd be steam'n. If not...I'm not sure. He may have felt that his "warning message" was adequate notice. In either case...good luck! I like GG too!!

Let's see. He called twice while I was in the air between Ft. Lauderdale and Detroit. I got the messages within 10 minutes of landing and had called him back within the hour.
My sales mgr. told me my salesman was with "another" customer -probably finalizing the deal the guy who bought MY SS?! :( and couldn't talk with me. I was told he'd call me back. Mmmmm hmmmm....

I suppose I could chalk this all up to unfortunate timing but it really has soured me on the ethics of this particular dealer.

I've just called a couple of other SOCAL dealers and have learned that if I switch, I'll be back on the tail end of the line - waiting 6-8 weeks again.

ARGHHH! :(!

Oh - and BTW DMor - congrats on the arrival of your new baby - but Mesabeige and not mahogany? I want to know more. :D

Pleeease. Have you become a DMor clone? What's the matter, finding the Silver a little Bald these days? As far as the Mahagony goes, it will grow on you once you thaw out. Some skeptics may claim it looks like a Tootsie Roll (my wife). But I like Tootsie Rolls, they are comforting, pleasing to the pallet, and carry an aire (not Derry Air) of youthfulness and vigor. Almost makes me forget I'm balding and an AARP member!!:D:D

dmor i agree with you on your color scheme...navy with cream, that would be a head turner on an mdx. i'll go with black on black 4 now. but i cant wait to see what colors come out in the coming years. i think black on black is the best available now.
Liberty... That's a rotten deal...really rotten and I'd be steam'n big time. It's one thing for dealers to have allotment issues and try to be fair and accommodating in spite of shortages, etc...but this guy sounds down right unethical. I'd speak with the sales manager and ask him to phone other dealers and see if he can switch the GG with SS? If he's not successful, I'd stay on the list, but request to change sales people due to this situation. I would also walk in and speak with the general manager and make your presence known. (If you haven't already)

You and I are on the same track with pearl white...but waiting for '02 would likely mean an August order with a November delivery at the earliest.

In contrast, my salesman "JD" at Cush in San Diego was on the phone for a couple of hours calling CA & AZ in search of a Mahogany to switch with the MB that came in. He was even willing to give up his commission if he could even FIND the MDX! He's been with Acura 10 years and has repeatedly gone 'beyond the call' which was one of the reasons I stayed loyal to him and didn't plunk deposits down everywhere. I'm not sure who wants mahogany more...me or him? But I am actually excited about the Mesa Beige after being somewhat disappointed yesterday. After all...this is my second chance at MB T&N after giving up the first one last month! He is also enhancing the $ale in other ways so believe me...in this MSRP world...I cannot complain!! In fact, Mesa Beige is a beautiful color and I won't have to wash it as much. Weekly car washes are just not my thing.

In addition, I just phoned Acura Customer Service and was told (what I already knew) that there are NO CUSTOM ORDERS...only ALLOTMENTS. Thus, Acura provides dealers with the "avails" and dealers pick from those "avails" while trying to match customer requests according to their order number on the LIST. However, there is no guarantee that Acura will not switch the anticipated avail and send something else. This causes problems with the dealership...and sometimes creates a dissatisfied customer.

If you are high enough on the list, some dealers will phone you every time they receive MDX's and give you first right of refusal. In my case, I kept turning them down to wait for Mahogany T&N. Obviously, the larger the dealer...the better the chances of getting the correct vehicle...based on their allotment volume. So...if I was venturing out with no experience...I'd put my money with the larger dealers who routinely have 40+ alloted MDXs...and who are charging only MSRP w/o add ons.

Interestingly, my acceptance of the MB T&N...just delayed the next guy who was waiting for that MDX and might have had the vin#. And so it goes.... ((If you're on this forum...thanks and I'll take good care of it!!)) :)

((In the meantime, Remery...take good care of my MDX...and ship that Honda generator!!)) :D

I'd send you the generator but what good will it do you if there is no gasoline in California to run it. I couldn't even ship it with good ole' Chicago blend because it you California doesn't like the "special sauce" we put in it. Anyway, I probably ought to keep it since ComEd leaves us in the dark frequently also. Just got past the 600 mile break in period this morning on your alledged Mahogany MDX. Whenever you are having a "senior moment" just check my Mahogany pics in the gallery and it should revive you.:D:D

P.S. Liberty, you wouldn't be treated like that back here in Illinois where you are from cause it's a hangin' offense. Kick rears and get someone's sales career shortened.
What I'd done to avoid this problem... 'cause I was scheduled to work for a month in the bay area while my MDX was on order... as soon as the dealer had a VIN number - I went in and completed the paperwork and gave them a large down payment... when my MDX did arrive, I was called two days in advance - and was given plenty of notice when I could come in to collect it. By completing the paperwork earlier - the dealer couldn't sell it to anyone else.

My advice: As soon as you get a VIN number - finalize the deal. You should be given the VIN number about 2 weeks before the MDX arrives at the dealer.

Good luck.

Gosh I wish I were back home in Illinois sometimes Remery. Good folks just don't act that way where I come from but then of course there are no Acura dealers in the Southern part of the State, either! Remember me? I'm the White Squirrel from Olney, IL? :D

LIBERTY: take the GG. I haven't seen an MDX yet, in any color, that I didn't think looked great. GG was my first choice but went for an early SS instead. Take that puppy and drive. After about ten miles, you won't be thinking about the color. Saw a Mahogany in the sunlight today and it was the best looking Tootsie Roll I've ever seen. BTW, I think some body styles look great in white, others don't. Not sure how the MDX would look, but it would have to be the pearl coat.
We wanted the Saddle interior and a dark color exterior. However we early on considered the GG. If it came in a cream/parchment (ala 2002 TL-S) we would have gotten the GG. We both liked the GG better than SS, however we did not want the Ebony interior.

msu,
Being a new fellow tootsie roll owner I want to ask whether or not you want to start a group whine about the Black shift knob. Fine if it came with an ebony interior but with the combination taupe/saddle leather, Pleeease! I feel we may have a case for reverse color discrimination. Don't you think Acura is undoubtledly exhorting us happless saddlites into spending the extra money for the Burl Wood Shift knob? Even my 7-year-old, $10K cheaper, SVX shifter leather matches the rest of the taupe interior. I noticed a question mark after this accessory in your signature so do you have the same gripe?:rolleyes:

When I was looking for a particular MDX - I was told by my dealer they didn't know what other dealers had... However when I called Cerittos Acura, the salesman there was very helpfull and gave me contacts for 3 dealers who had the exact model I was looking for, either in stock or in the next shipment. They may have someone on their list looking for a MB.

Good luck with whatever colour you get.

Regards

Hey...I've got an idea...swap the shift knobs between your SVX and MDX. Think your wife will notice?? :) I will be sure to ask this question today when I pick up my MB. BTW...plate idea for you Rem... WASDEBS :D

Rail...I sure love that Mahogany...but I am truly tired of the color hassle. In addition, I would probably never keep it as clean as it needs to be in order to look totally sharp and gold will hide more dirt. I'd almost be afraid of what my afternoon would be like if someone had a Mahogany T&N avail in SoCal. My salesman told me he called all over the place and could not find one that was not already sold. I'll be sure to dress the MB up with chrome or silver powder coated side steps and am anxious to see yours!! Plus, I'll have the TG Deflector painted, as well as the flares...lower trim...rubstrip......next...Lojack...maybe custom sheepskin seatcovers (front only)...I already have all the cargo stuff.

DMor...didn't you mean...NOWBOBS :p
I would like to have white too, but since they were limited on colors inside and out. I chose black so I could choose interior color which is ebony.

I'm never surprised with the poor behavior of Acura Dealers. They really do not run a premium franchise. Acura builds fine cars. Their dealers exploit the consumers yet Acura has never equated this mis behavior with an opportunity to build sales on quality service. Too Bad. I also wonder how many of the defender of Acura are dealers or car sales people discuising their defense as another consumer? I visited 3 dealers before I bought my MDX 4 months ago and still waiting.
dancall,
i think acura is very conservative with their colors and didnt want to risk any unusual color, but i agree with you on the white...? unusual - not!

liberty,
sorry about your experience, that really sux - do something! btw, have you tried calling canyon acura? ask for gordon jewell, he's a real nice sales person. on the other hand you should seriously consider the GG. although i have a SS, after seeing some GG on the streets i think they look really sharp.

dmor,
blue with cream interior! i three-peat that! that was my dream mdx (might be the MDX type-S color to come). have you seen the X5 in that metallic blue? looks very cool. did acura have some negative 'fung-sui' with the blue?
Yea we are undecided. I would have preferred a saddle leather shifter, even over the burl wood. There is some black trim in the interior so it doesn't look "that" bad. It's more the fact that it doesn't match that bothers me.

We've looked at the 2002 TL-S and they match! Black leather shifter in the Ebony models and a Parchment leather shifter in the Parchment. The TL parchment is much ligher than MDX Saddle so they won't interchange.
Liberty. GO FOR THE GRANITE GREEN. I got mine last month and I love the color. I would have preferred the tan interior like so many others but the ebony has not been a problem and I love that the kids dirt and mud doesn't show up with the black interior.

Man I can't believe the gull your sales rep has! He was in it for himself and his sale. I would defiantely talk to the General Manager and explain to him how disapointed you are in his dealership, that you had the vin# and wasn't given enough time to call back and discuss this with your sales rep that he went off without talking to you and sold it under your nose! What the heck is the deposit for? Now I'm worried...I sure hope this doesn't happen to me. Personally I don't think you should have to settle for the GG....If the SS is what you want you make them find you one! And make sure you're not going to be waiting another 6-8 weeks or otherwise I would take my buisness else where. You settling for the GG kinda excuses your sales reps behavior. Don't let them push you around! This is your $40k you're spending! Make them respect you! Get the MDX that YOU want not what THEY want you to have because they screwed up!!!! Good luck and let us know what happens!
Hey Everyone! Thanks for being buddies and for all your support. I went ahead and told them to keep my name on the list as first right of refusal for the GG, and I also made an appointment to go in and speak to the sales manager re: my disappointment in their business practices. Tomorrow. (DUM da DUM DUM!!!)

Interestingly, the service satisfaction rep called today "We were following up - we understand you had your Acura in for service with us and we just wanted to make sure you were satisfied." So I let her know that I wasn't satisfied and that I'd really LIKE to have an Acura that I might take in for service and I filled her in on their little sales service hickup. Hopefully, it will make the GM's report. And if it doesn't, well, the owners of the dealership just happen to live on my street so I plan to stop them and give them an earful the next time them see them walking their dogs.

Out of frustration, I did go and look at BMW's again, but by the time they add all the bells and whistles on a $38k base, those are going for $50k and still just don't offer the same features and benefits that the MDX does. So - I'll continue to wait. And I'll keep you posted on the results. (BTW, on my daily dealer driveby today, they had yet another fully loaded Tootsie Roll!)

Liberty
Liberty send me the tootsie roll! Even though I don't want the touring package. It's only been 3 weeks so far of waiting and I'm already going crazy!!!!!! I sure hope that I get the build date in the next couple of weeks otherwise I might go insane waiting! Good luck on your meeting tomorrow! Don't let them take advantage of you by no means! They screwed up make sure they're gonna do something about it for you! Let us know what happens!

Liberty,
I agree with Carey Paul. Show no mercy and do not settle for anything less than you want. If fact, show the dealership owners the picture of my dog posted in the gallery next time they are out walking theirs. Tell this dog is from your home state of Illinois and enjoys snacking on smaller canines and will travel!!(He really is a moosh but they don't have to know that!!) If you have no immediate need for a vehicle due to lease or automobile expiration wait for your color.
