What's the Dumbest Thing You've Ever Done with Your MDX? - Click HERE for Original Thread

New dumb thing for me, I just Zaino'd the X and had a chair on the passenger side (it was there so I could detail the top of the X). I am backing up and turning and I feel this chud chud, and hear a loud plop! Immediately, I say "crap"! Its that darn chair, stop, get out and look, yup, ran over the chair, by hitting it with my side, chairs on floor, but lucky for me, no scratches!

I drove it through an automatic car wash with the sunroof open in the vent position. Actually, it was a test of whether water would come in when the sunroof was vented....Yeah, that's the ticket...It was a test.

Not much water came in though. You can all rest assured that a rainstorm with a vented sunroof won't do your MDX any harm. Boy, the things I do for you......
Jeff
Parking brake thing, only I actually pulled over and stopped the car to get out and check tire inflation, because I knew something was wrong with the car. Didn't figure it out until after I circled the car and got back in.

VW sunroofs/moonroofs have a venting thingy in there, that keeps rain water out.

backed into my boss's Acura TL causing 2000 dollars worth of damage. The X went over the car like it was Bigfoot, was parked on a slight hill. Very minor dents and barely any scatches to mine.

-just recently found out that there was a front defrost button
-couldnt find the rear defrost button.

oh yeah and the occasional driving with the foot brakes on.

Yeah- I just found the outside mirror defroster button. A friend of mine just found the "power mirror fold back " button on his year-old Silverado.

So far so good :17: but:
1. Backed into my grandmother's storage shed. Decent scrape on the rear bumper I might cover with a 3M rubber strip.
2. Parked without allowing at least a 20-space buffer zone around the X to prevent those $%&*@! dings, but mine aren't as bad as some I've seen on other dark color X's.
3. Haven't programmed the homelink even after 2 1/2 years.

I don't know whether they improved the parking brakes on the 03 but if I leave mine on the vehicle will not move. Only having had mine for a month or so the dumbest thing I have done was to let my wife drive it for a few days, we decided that she needed one also. We were a salesmans dream, two MDS's in three weeks.
So far the second dumbest thing was waxing it and taking my son to a paintball park with about 3/4 mile dusty access road. Duh.

While shopping, I separated the remote from the key, and gave the remote to my wife, and kept the key so we didn't have to meet back somewhere at a particular time. Whoever was done, could come and wait in the X. `course I get back first and unlock the driver door with the key to get in and off goes the alarm in panic mode!!! Wasn't sure how to make it stfu without the remote. It did when I started the car.

Go to Grocery Store
Pull into Garage
Take Groceries in house.
Close Garage DOOR
OOPS forgot to put down Rear Gate
The nice little garage door assemby put my gate down for me as the door closed. Next day I looked and said where the heck did this scratch come from. Then i figured it out. DAHHH

I wont even tell the story of my 3000.00 Simplicity that did not have 1 sec of grass mowing on, that I mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake to park in a 12x20 shed. Crashed into barbecue grill and took out headlights and scratched new tractor. Wife laughed forever. Ego still hurts.

Even dumber than that. Christmas Eve, going to church, and needed the rear seat up. Opened the garage door, opened the hatch, raised the seats, then backed out - oops, should have closed the hatch. $750 later all was well. Puts you in a great frame of mind for a Christmas Eve service...

I closed my garage door yesterday and forgot that my trunk was still open. Needless to say, I now have a long scratch on my trunk. Oh... its bad. Its like someone had keyed it real deep into the metal. I'm so mad at myself now its not even funny. And to make matters worse, my garage door is also messed up. God darn it. Poor the X... The scratch is about 4 or 5 inches long. How much is the estimated damage at the body shop?

You could just get touch up and try to cover it up till you get some estimates, need to keep flash rust at bay.
pcgold
Oh Man do I feel your pain!

Used to have a Ford Exploder before the X. One day I had an extra set of keys in my pocket. On those keys were an extra garage door remote. Anyhow, as I was backing out, I went to put my seatbelt on and must have pressed the garage door button. Next thing I know, huge noise and my roof rack comes flying over the front windshield.

This ended up bending the rails for the roof rack and the sunroof never fit tightly after that. Doh!

Also, once I was in the back of the hatch, door open and my wife decided to open the garage door. Bent both the hatch door and the garage door.

We got rid of the Exploder.

I am so careful now with the garage door. Always make sure it's not moving when I am and am very careful not to have the rear hatch open anywhere near where the garage door might hit it.

Good luck and I hope it's not too expensive.
nightguy
Geez. what settings do you have on the downward force and auto-reverse ? I would think there's a chance you could also trip the optical sensor. If you don't have one, I would seriously think of upgrading. Ideally the door should reverse on a flat 2x4 and without much pressure on your hand.
pcgold
I think it was more the really lousy timing. Just as I backed out, the door came down. I was still going backwards when the roof rack must have caught the bottom of the door. Just dumb luck. Was a long time ago anyhow.

1. Driving with parking brake on.

2. Hauling drywall and 2 x 4’s on top of vehicle. Unfortunately I put 2 x 4’s on rack first and then 7 sheets of drywall which helped the drywall easily slide off and slide across the major intersection when I had to quickly stop for a red light. I now know to put the drywall on first. Only one guy helped me reload (some sheets had slid more than 50 feet). All this guy said was, “Been there, done that.” Other drivers just honked. Because it was a fast enough stop, the drywall and lumber missed the front of the vehicle, so no damage to the MDX. I was also able to use most of the drywall.

3. I had some film on the windshield that window cleaners could not get off, so I used Comet and a brillo pad. This cleaned the film, but driving at night was treacherous because headlights shinning on all the scratches reduced visibility considerably. I had a small crack on the windshield, so I encouraged the crack’s growth by pounding on the windshield so the crack would grow and make it unrepairable. This way my insurance company would pay for most of my new windshield. Unfortunately, I did not realize when I recently raised my deductible to $1k, that also raised my comprehensive to $1k too, so I ended up paying $400 for a new windshield myself.

4. Jackknifed my utility trailer (I bought this mainly because of my drywall experience) and dented the rear bumper.

5. Not a stupid thing, just a mean thing. I never reprogrammed the HomeLink thing, so whenever I drive by my old house, I open the garage door. It is my way of getting back at him for not offering to pay full price.

Well, I just did the dumbest thing. I was replacing the air filter @ my 45K mile service, and dropped a ratchet into the engine bay, below the air filter molding.

Pretty stupid move--I went on a road trip afterward, and I can still see the ratchet lodged down there...gotta get one of those magnetized tools to try and draw it out...

What an idiot!

Uh, I took a turn in mine at a speed and angle which is more suitable to a Honda S2000. It was actually a downhill sweeper on a fast-travelled road. It was kinda like a fork....you choose to go left, or right. I changed my mind VERY VERY late and was going maybe 60mph.

Needless to say, the split second that it lasted, felt like eternity, and my heart was about to come out of my throat. Amazingly the MDX took it w/o even the slightest hint of impending flipover. I dunno if the VSA came on, I dont recall seeing the light. But I thought I was gonna oversteer BIG TIME due to my massive steering correction, but thankfully it didn't even do that.

Anyway after that experience, you realize what the width of this vehicle and car-like steering and brake response does for you. And I have the stock touring tires and wheels!

With 19 inch Z-rated rubber, I dare anyone to outhandle me in an X5.

On that note, I took a spin in a Cayenne Turbo this past weekend. WHOA. That thing is almost worth the asking price, you just dunno what it can do w/o driving it. Too bad it looks pretty ugly I must say. But my friend's sure was a beautiful color, this awesome blue.

Hey man, on a busy night in a Metropolitan city anywhere in the world, it's worth it to avoid hassle / time waste. Just make the guy park it outside of the club/restaurant/etc, and then take the keys! Me and my buddies almost always do! Except at those places where it's impossible to do that. Yeah usually they ask for more but we just make them think we are bigshot regulars and they dont dare speak up. Heheh. :2:
OP MDX
Back to the topic, I had mine for a week before I took it down a new cut subdivision road. It had rained and the road was about half clay. It was slippery and deep. I had it in so deep, I couldn't clean it all. The service dept had to finish cleaning it. They said the oil filter was covered. It was so stupid, I haven't done it since. I came so close to being stuck about a mile into this s/d. The mud was so bad, it would of taken an hour to walk back to civilization.

Not in the X but a parking brake incident.

My coworker asked if I could drop him and his family off at the airport in his van. I agreed. The van (a dodge caravan) had a pedal parking brake similar to the X's. As I dropped him and his family off, I started to drive away. Then I noticed the parking brake was on. So, in an attempt to release it, I stepped on it. Van came to a SCREECHING halt! My coworker and his family as well as other people at the airport looked in amazement. I finally got it released and drove away completely embarrassed. I can still remember the look on his face.

ok... let's see

first year of ownership:

1) got a flat and did not know about it until someone passing by told me. then spent 15 minutes with TLC's CR trying to figure out how to remove the spare, then another 20 minutes explaning to her where to send the tow truck (she did not know how to remove the spare, and she was in Canada and I was in low-Manhattan). after waiting for 40 minutes, decided to figure it out and did, and replaced the spare in 10 minutes :bonk:

2) a few months later, in the public garage backed up into the neighbor's '95 Ford Explorer with grill bar - made 2 dents on the bumper; same day(!) backed up into a tree, finishing the bumper with a nice 10 inches corner dent - must not have been my day(!)
had the bumper fixed and repainted by local acura dealer

3) some a$$ hit the rear door with the mirror and left a dent on the rear driver side door, while parked on the street. in a few days, got another small dent on the same door. decided to take it to the Dent Wizard. the guy spent 2 hours trying to fix and did an ok job, but... a month later got another 2 dings on the same door (what's up with that? I actually notice a great deal of MDXs with similar-looking door dings. Sheet metal of the panels must be too thin or something)

4) decided to get a fs spare. soon thereafter, hit the curb trying to make the corner (as it turned out, i needed the next turn) and ended up with blown tire and scratched rim. rim i got from fs became my primary

5) was detailing the interior. decided to clear the dust inside the a/c ducts. pulled the duct's cover and it separated into pieces
one of the pieces fell into the duct and is still there. went to the local dealer to get the part, waited 2 weeks while driving with an open duct. dealer had to replace the whole cover

this summer:

6) the winner on my list: spent hours washing, waxing, vacuuming, detailing on friday night (like, 1 AM! - was preparing for a long trip), only to have the rain in early morning, then more rain the entire trip and end up with heavy dirt on the sides, and tons of dead mosquitos on the windshield

:2: huh-huh, do I win the cake? :toothless

I was browsing the owners manual on the way home from dealer, saw the pic with what looked like buttons on the remote for the seat memory locations.

I was 5 seconds away from calling the dealer and asking why I didn't receive the remotes with the seat 1/2 position buttons thinking they passed off the base model remote on me. I didn't notice the imprint on the back of the remote with the seat memory indicator. I finally realized the remote itself was tied to the position and that the missing buttons were not missing after all...close call.

I tried it out and there was no audible alarm. Am I missing something here???

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention this. My '04 Touring Navi has an alarm sound that goes off if you start moving with the parking brake engaged.

I actually heard it today and was wondering what the hell it was for, since I didn't seem to have any trouble backing up and moving forward about 50' before I figured out what it was trying to tell me.

I can't comment on the '03, but my '04 definitely has the parking brake alarm sound.

If you used Lexus or mercedes's dealer service, you will notice the big difference, the stealer's prices are comparable. Acura has a long way to catch up. Every stealer provide free car wash including toyota.

Service is one thing, Acura quality is bad, my other lexus Lx450 now 85,000 miles, has only done warranty service on thing like antenna and regular maintenance.

While the MDX, one year old, 20,000 miles, had one recall, warranty service on brake clunk 3 times, wiper thing, remote radio on steering, suspension noise while turning & braking once in a while, lousy speakers, road noise is pretty bad. I reall even my old civic didn't have that many thing fixed in one year.
Not to mention I still have to worry about the tranny soon.

I was an idiot today. I was taking my lawnmower for a tune-up and blade sharpening. When the light turned green, I started forward, and BOOM!! The lawnmower rolled back and broke my rear window.. Shattered.

I called my insurance co (Progressive), and they set me up with a glass co to replace the rear window. In fact, the guy came to my office only 2 hours after I did this!

Fortunately, I have comprehensive with $100 deductible...

I once did a four hour radio show talking about how hard it was raining that evening and how much thunder and lightning we were having. Gave at least eight weather reports. Got outside and all four of my windows were down AND the sunroof open!

You have no monopoly on being a dumbass, I can assure you of that.

Then there was the frigid cold winter night that I left 12 cases of canned soda (that's 288 cans!) in my car overnight. They ALL exploded and sprayed sticky caramel soda goo *all over the interior*. What a mess!

So do I win the dumbass award or what?

OMG, you guys are distressing me.:D Please stop. I thought it was bad when my hatch hit the garage door when I opened it, and the paint was chipped.

I went out to rent movies tonight (just so I can drive my MDX... ) I got so excited that when I when I was heading home from Hastings, I forgot to disengage the parking brake! It's a good thing my wife is there to point it out before I drove off. Then, after driving about 1 mile, my wife asked "did u turn the lights ON?" WOW!!!! In my excitement I forgot to turn the headlights ON!!! talk about careless driving! For those who forgot to disengage their parking brakes, how far did you drive before you noticed that the parking brake was still engaged? And did you hear a "beep" or read a warning message on the info display?

Had both garage doors open. X in one bay, with the hatch open and sticking out under where the door travels down its track.

Wanted to close the other door. Went to the wall where the GD opener buttons are, and out of habit or muscle memory, pushed the button on the X's door and started walking inside the house.

By the time I realized it, the hatch had been pushed down halfway.

Body shop said it would cost almost $500 to repaint the hatch to get rid of the 5" scratch. Went with the little can of TU paint, elbow grease and wax.

I had just gotten LASIK and didn't yet realize the crap vision I would have at night, and upon backing out with my (former car) a honda civic, I hit both the front and rear driver side doors of my MDX. Luckily it was covered by insurance.... don't ask. Damaged two cars while driving one!.... Do I get the award?
