What's the Dumbest Thing You've Ever Done with Your MDX? - Click HERE for Original Thread

When I was driving my brand spanking new MDX home last night for the first time listening to my tunes the left channel kept fading in and out intermitantly. With all the "Chin Music" the audio elite in this forum have been putting forth, I was sure it was a problem with my "sub-standard" Bose touring package system. Then today while waiting outside my wife's office to take her to lunch, I set the navigation system while playing a CD. All of a sudden the left channel fades and this sweet young thing announces "Proceed along the route" and then Voila, the left channel comes back loud and strong. Duh! I apologize for having this senior moment but some of the blame has to be put on all of you Bose Phobes, yes you know who you are, for conditioning me into this type of reactive irrational response.

Another thing, how do all you MDX veterans handle the sheer sensory overload created by the navigation system whispering sweet nothings into your ear, keeping track of your mpg on the trip computer, determining which of the six CDs are playing, inhaling that intoxicating new car smell and still drive the damn truck?:D:D
You're making me even more envious of all you current owners. I hope to put my deposit down on Monday- then I can really start the clock ticking for our new toy!
Keep those posts coming as it should ownly heighten our experience of actually OWNING that MDX!!!:D:D:D:D:D
rem-

similar moment is when one is SURE the right rearview mirror is 'broken' because it stopped going down when you reverse....dang Touring package rip-off!

then you realize the switch needs to be in the middle position. This happened the week after I got mine- I almost posted the 'problem', but then, risking my manhood, I read the manual.)

Ard,
I check the pitch of my voice after starting to read the manual and I am still a tenor, Whew!. But I hear ya!:D

Funny ard--I did the same thing! Didn't need to go quite as far as checking the manual, though, but I still felt pretty silly.
When we got our LS430 I quickly realized that if I did'nt read the manual COVER TO COVER I would NEVER figure out how to work everything (or even know that some of the gadgets were there). It is now a (??bad??) habit.

mdcmdx,
My guess is you are female because I don't see a navi listed on the MDX - you want to ask directions. Not reading manuals, not asking directions, and hoarding the remote are guy things. However, if I am wrong about your gender, then you must just be more sensitive than the rest of us!:D:D Anyway dumb rookie mistakes makes us guys more humble by laughing at ourselves in this forum!!:D:D:D

P.S. Nice fleet of wheels, you either sold your tech stocks last spring when they were still worth something or are related/own a car dealer!!
In fact my wife laughs at me for "studying" the manuals (usually sitting in the car trying everything out). As I said, with the LS if I tried it the old way (trial and error, hunt and peck) it would have taken forever.
I sat and read the Service Manual (admittedly with one eye on the TV).

Can't imagine what that says about me. :)

Ard

BTW, just to rescue my image: the mirror thing occurred back in October. Nobody really knew much at that point (including my purchasing dealer)
My husband read the whole manual. I like to figure it out on my own. I'm glad he likes to read though, that way I can ask him about what needs to be done when it's maitenance time. But for all the little do-dads I like to play with them and be suprised when I figure them out.
lmeans
Congrats on the new MDX!!!

Out of curiosity, as a senior member of this forum, was your perception of the MDX still positive after all the various discussions of problems with the MDX?

Happy MDXing!!!

Here's a manual your hubby might be interested in that would benefit you...note # 13 :)

If you will pardon the indulgence, how about sharing your dumb experiences? Everyone has a dumb moment, and it's quite likely it'll happen with your MDX.

I've heard folks who have backed out of the garage with the hatch wide open and it scraping the garage door (sorry if I'm stirring up someone's unpleant memory).

A troll here would answer "buying one."

Some folks will say "not getting the Navi."

Some folks will say "letting my kid carry his hot chocolate into the car."

Some will answer "telling my wife/husband that she/he can drive it whenever he/she wants."

What's your dumbest moment with your MDX?

The prize for the dumbest moment will be the respect you will command on this system for revealing the dumbness of your dumb thing.

Constantly forgeting to take off the parking brake.
SunTan
Share the same problem with Warzau. Now, I don't even put on parking brake (even parking on the slope in SF streets) :)

I third that one. We have driven with the emergency brake on, more so than the Integra we previously had. It seems to have to do with having a foot brake. Plus the fact that the brake is weak to begin with and you don't notice! :D
remery
First night I drove the MDX I thought my speaker was bad until I realized the Navi dampens the music volume until she is done talking! Just a dumb rookie mistake!
mdxxxx
I fourth the "Constantly forgeting to take off the parking brake" theme, although I'm getting better at remembering to disengage it now. I bet the parking brake issue would win in a poll.
Maik
Fourth of July weekend, my daughter was visiting. She had parked her car outside the garage behind my stall. I jumped into my car, opened the garage door and proceeded to back out like I always do, watching the mirror clearance on the sides as usual, and BAM
I hit her front left quarter panel, destroyed her headlight and assembly, pushed up the grill, banged the hood, and mangled the front quarter panel. $3,000 of damage to her car. Couple of small scratches on the bumper of the X! I still have not even bothered to replace the bumber, but I likely will at some point.
Very humbling experience!

Guess I will be the 5th Parking Break victim. Really hate it when I forget to release the break. Wish there was some warning sound the X would make to let us know the break is on.

Probably more trouble than it's worth, but a small buzzer could be put across the brake dash light circuit.
Switch is probably on the parking brake mechanism.

Me, too. I was really bummed. Luckily, the ride home was long enough to figure it out -- at which point, "gee, that's cool."
DaleB
Dumb would be thinking the radio came on to quiet the navi gal.
voltes
I sixth that parking break issue! :)

Also, one I did and still keep doing and replying back to the Navi voice to acknowledge her instructions. Do'h! :p

I did a "back-out and BAM!" thing, too. I had parked my wife's '99 Accord in the driveway and then forgot about it. Shortly after, I backed the X out of the carport and proceeded to scrub the X's left rear bumper/tire/wheel against the Accord's right rear bumper. That stupidity cost me almost $400. (Rear-view mirrors -- what dat?)

One night I turned on the inside dome lights over the dash so I could read the instruction manual and naturally when I left the car, I forgot to turn the lights off. The parking brake is and will always be a pain in the you know what.

Try turning the ignition key when the engine is already on!! I did that on the first day after I picked up the X!! yukes!!

Not checking the body after getting it back from valet parking in San Francisco. There's a relatively-hard-to-notice-but-nonetheless-there indentation along the passenger front side door.

That and letting my wonderful wife ride along with her 44 oz. Diet Coke one time...which ended up on her SEAT!!

I put on my ski attachment for my Yakima rack and backed into the garage to see if I had enough clearance. Spent too much time watching the ski rack and not enough time checking my right mirror. Ended up rubbing the side of my garage.

hoo, what about a one-way lever under the shifter panel that disengages the parking brake every time you move out of park? Since a certain amount of force would be required to release the parking brake, this shifter switch could be attached to a solenoid so there would be no effort at all on the part of the driver.

Better yet, many car stereo installers have removed parking brake pedals and replaced them with electically operated parking brakes, just press a button to engage and disengage. No reason this can be used with the "park" position of the transmission. Automatic parking brake, and automatic release. And the technology is already available and I think for less than $150. Just need to integrate the brake to the transmission - minimal R,D, and production costs.

1. Ordering my MDX without Navi. (cancelled first order, ordered again with Navi)

2. Turning ignition key to start while engine is already running.

3. Scratching the X with the hose while washing. (so minor Z5 has fixed it)

4. Scratching the X with the hose while washing again. (Z5 will not fix this time)

5. Driving for a long time with the turn signal on. (have done this numerous times, but probably not today)

6. Using California Duster after my drive in the sand on the beach in S. Washington. Believe it or not the minor scratches disappeared after washing with Z7 and buffing with Z6.

7. Dropped the ignition key between the center console and the front seat.

8. Reversed front and rear screws while installing license plates. The front screws are slightly shorter and when put in the rear the plate fell off.

9. To be continued, more confessions later.

Hey BaldE,

Costco sells a great car wash nozzle that is completely coated with rubber to prevent you from scratching your X while washing. It's really easy to use, and it can take a beating. I think it's called the 'Car Wash nozzle' or something--it's where all the car wash goodies are there... Maybe that'll prevent some new scratches!

Rob:31:

Although I already post once someone else did the same thing so I got two that are better.

1. Put my Acuramdx.org on the inside of the back window instead of outside so it was backwards and couldn't see it.

2. Was lazy and since I have a 300 foot driveway, thought I could save some walking. I dragged the 90 gallon plastic garbage container which has wheels by holding on to it through the driver's window only to discover that it put two dings in my rear door and a scratch. Thought steel was harder than plastic.:32:
DaleB
Backed into the end of a back porch railing. Just in a hurry, not thinking. Put a ding in the hatch right by the edge so will require more major surgery than paintless dent removal can handle.

Still leave the parking brake on quite often. It actually seems to grab better now. So maybe the service manual procedure of wearing it in by driving a short distance with it on, is working!

Backed out of the garage with the passenger door open. Ouch is right.

Opened the hatch and let it fly -- in a low-clearance underground garage with cement roof/supports. Fortunately, DentPro did a good job repairing it.

Thanks for offering your advice to help me prevent this self inflicted damage again.

Funny you should mention this nozzle from Costco, was just looking at it last weekend. Would have bought it but it appeared to not have an off trigger. Do you know if water can be turned on/off with out going to the faucet with this nozzle. Read package and it did not indicate an off feature.

No prob--yup, you actually twist to turn the nozzle on and off. Turn all the way to the right, and it's turned off. Turn a bit to the left and the initial spray is the hardest, and it lightens as you turn the nozzle further left.

Well, I leased a fully loaded 2001 Chrysler Voyager LX and then found out about the MDX by accident. (Thanks to GatorGreg =^D) If I had only found this site earlier I would have ignored the Voyager traded in the CRV instead of keeping it, and leased me a GG w/Navi and been very very happy.

Did I mention I would have been very very happy?

Dumbest thing....getting very frustrated at my X when I couldn't take the stupid keys out of the ignition....the dumb car was moving too! (which was scary, cause I was in a friend's driveway moving towards their garage door) - - and fighting with this situation for a good minute or two! Until I realized that I hadn't put the car in park :2:

The worst part was this has really happened to me twice now....I am a menace to society (or to garage doors everywhere).

The dumbest thing I did was breaking my heel while I was washing my MDX. I reached too far on the roof, my stepstool started to fall, and I pulled it away from the MDX so I wouldnt scratch it, and I tumbled down. Its been 9 months and I still have pain.

For me it was three things.

1. was to buy my X from the dealer that I did.

2. The night I brought it home I thought that the interior lights were broken because when I opened the door they would not go on. I searched everywhere for the switch which I came to find out was right in front of me.

3. Came within moments of calling the dealership because the driver's side mirror would not tilt on my new MDX with Touring.

From the last two I learned a valuable lesson- always check the owner's manual when you encounter a problem before calling the dealer.

Don't have my 'X' yet, but I have a feeling that you may have purchased yours from the same one I am using. If it is Tischer I know I already agree with you. With 2 weeks until arrival (hopefully) I am optimistic that things will improve since my former salesperson is no longer employed there.

Backing out of parking slot at the store to hear a metal against metal sound! I never saw her and she never saw me. (Parking slots all going in same direction - one way street). We were in each other's blind spot and busy looking for cars in road and people walking in both directions. I did learn that when an "X" and a full size Chevy truck (with a metal bumper) tangle the truck WILL win:eek: . That boo-boo cost $500 (the insurance deductable:( ). I went to the gas station to wash the windows, thus putting the wiper arms up. I wanted to put more water in the reservoir and upon lifting the hood, I heard two thumps. Immediately I realized that I forgot to put down the arms and the hood pushed them down causing the paint on the arms to be scratched off and some scrapes along the inside edge of the hood. Stupid, stupid, stupid :1pat: :bonk: :24:

So much for anticipating that first door ding, the only person to watch out for was myself :awais:

Should we report it to Acura Manufacturer??? so many times with the parking brake on!!! I just can't believe it so many of us.

I locked myself out of my X just as it started to rain while I was parked at the front of a long line of cars/trucks waiting to get onto a ferry at Bar Harbor, Maine going to Yarmouth Nova Scotia. I had to call a tow truck service to get back in. It took two guys - one on the driver's door and one on the passenger's door - working for 40 minutes to open the lock as everyone watched (how embarrassing). The tow truck guys told me that they had no information in their book on how they could get into an MDX. Well, they know now thanks to me. Luckily, I was there two hours early, so it turned out fine.
doggiedog
You should get a magnetic key case and hide it somewhere under your car. I had a Prelude that would lock itself after a few minutes even if the keys were in the ignition. After having to walk several miles home to get a spare set, I made sure those are the first things I get on my cars.
oceanMDX
Yes, that's exactly what I did. I got the key from a Honda dealer, and it only can open the door - not start the engine. The key only cost me a couple of bucks Canadian. Excellent idea doggiedog.:7:

While parking on street trying to get close to the curb last night I found out the hard way that the mirrors on the X are the same height as mailboxes on the side of the street. Thankfully they collapse and the mark was minimal. Watch out for that one.

I don't know if I should start a new thread with this, but I noticed in my owner's manual and from the '03 MDX brochure that there is suppose to be an alarm that chimes or sounds to remind the driver that the parking brake is still engaged. I tried it out and there was no audible alarm. Am I missing something here???

I have just gotten into the habit of ONLY locking the doors with the remote. NEVER touch the lock inside. That way you always have a way of unlocking the door.:p I have thought about getting an extra key to hide under the car also. You can never be too careful!:4:

After a trip to the supermarket, parked the "x" in the garage and opened the tailgate to take out the groceries. During the last trip from the garage to the kitchen, I got a phone call that distracted me for about 10 minutes. I now realize that I have another errand to run, so I jump back in the "x" and try to back out of the garage with the tailgate still up. It and the overhead garage door are now close friends.

$1250 and two weeks later, I now have my "x" back. I am now very paranoid about the tailgate. Everytime I back out of the garage, I can still hear that awful crunch sound.

Just tonight I'm at the mobile station when a Silver X pulls up to the Island next to mine. The guy pops the fuel fill door gets out of his car, walks around the car to the other side where the pump is but the fuel fill door is not. He grabs a pump and looks with bewilderment and the mysterious moving fuel fill door. After he realizes that the door is on the other side he looks around so see who spotted him. He puts back the pump. He gets back in his X. I figure to move the car to the proper side of the island so he can pump his gas. No, he gets out again, removes the fuel fill cap, puts it in the cradel, walks around the X and grabs the pump and tries to make it reach the other side. Now, my son and I are just standing there checking the poor guy out with big smiles on our faces because he was trying to make it look like he meant to park and pump there. Too late, his cool has been blown. I finish pumping my X and wait to see what he does. He takes off, sure enough, with his fuel fill door open, and his cap in it's cradle. From what I've read, not the dumbest thing one has done but pretty dang embarrassing. I was going to tell him about the forum but he drove off so fast.

After reading all the other dumb things other folks have done, I thought it time to confess my sin and bump the thread...

A month after getting my X, with the tow package to help with taking my Scouts camping, I rented a small U-Haul trailer to carry the camp gear for a trip the next day. The night before the trip I decided to practice backing-up with the trailer and quickly heard a "thump" from the back of my truck. Before checking, I pulled forward and was relieved to see nothing wrong to the rear of the truck. The next morning afterr picking up the kids and loadking all the gear in the trailer for the trip, stopped at a gas station and on the way to pay, glanced back at my X to see a large dent on the right rear quarter panel - the trailer had jackknifed the night before and I had looked in the wrong place for damage. $1,500 to fix.

And the parking brake - too many stories to tell now. Is there a fix?
jeych
Mine was to pay $2000 above msrp for an mdx that turned out to be a lemon. I only paid the extra money so I didn't have to go on a wait list, getting my X only A month after it became available (nov 2000), still sad how the dealer dogged other people that came ahead of me just because I paid more, no I didn't offer to pay more, they just figured they could get more out of me and dog everyone else.

The first day I had the MDX I managed to hit the neighbors mailbox because I was too enthralled with the new navi system my wife was trying to use. This act caused a deep crease in the front quarter panel and front door as well as damage to the mirror.

Bill to fix panel/door/mirror and mailbox? $1200, and only 18 miles on the odo. We were both sick.

I did the same thing. Funny thing that they put the side mirrors at the EXACT height as all mailboxes. Thankfully I was backing up slowly and the mirror folded and not a mark was left but could very well have been worse

Q: Is that why I only get 5 mpg? Sheesh! The Acura engineers should have designed a more fuel efficient SUV in the MDX.:1pat: :roadtrip: :1pat: :roadtrip:

I was parallel parking on a street,
park, get out, and then decide to backup further,
to allow more room to the guy parked in front of me.

Well, don't I backup a little too much,
and "touch" the bumper/license plate of the car behind me.

luck, no visible damage.
