Hi DaleB:
___Yep. In Northern IL., the State Police have been using the stealth Camaro’s and Mustangs for over a year now. They don’t have a light bar on top at all! They are also using dark Blue and Black Grand Marquis’ without light bars but since they are rather large, you can sometimes spot them before you overtake them ;) In any case, there are still more std. White State Police cruisers with the entire assortment of lights and antennas … They have been pulling the “Cop on the overpass” trick radioing ahead to the 5 or 6 cruisers up ahead to pull over drivers in masse on I55 south of I294 over the last month or two so be careful out there.
___As for my own citations … well lets just say that I usually get ~ one a year (thank goodness for court supervision for my 50,000 + mile/yr drive) and all have come from fully marked Cruisers hiding behind embankments, small buildings, up the Oasis’ ramps, and behind the weigh stations unfortunately …
___Good Luck

Thanks for the info, Dale!
You know, I saw a show on TLC a while back about speeding tickets. Apparently, speed limits and speeding tickets were actually implemented at a time when gas was in somewhat scarce supply, to keep people from burning it too fast. They were supposed to remove the signs and stop writing tickets when the crisis was over. But they found that they made so much money off of tickets, that they continued it.
Anything to make a buck, I guess... :3:

Sorry archimedes1, speed limits have been around since I have been driving [over 30 years] and law enforcement has been issuing speeding tickets. When I was young, gas was in plentiful supply and there were always "gas wars" [often paid under 20 cents per gallon].
I suspect that speed limits were introduced as a "safety measure". No question that tickets represent a source of revenue.

I have been thinking about getting a radar detector for my 03 MDX when it arrives. Has anyone had any experience with these tools.?Are they worthwhile?
I heard ( I am not sure where, so it may not be reliable) that a Valentine One is one of the best radar detectors. Any feedback?
Where is a good place to buy radar detectors?
It seems to me it would be best hardwired into the electrical system rather than just plugged into an electrical outlet. Is this feasable?
Also can it be mounted somewhere in the car more permanently (?under the hood) rather than just stuck on the dash or sunvisor? |

| Lots and lots of topics including pics of installs. Do some searches under Escort, Valentine, radar, etc. |

Some 20 years ago in Ohio, I saw a Corvette [police driven] pull over another Corvette. They were using confiscated vehciles for stealth.
The Arizona [think I got the state right] Highway Patrol used 1974 Bricklin SV-1s for patroll cars. For those who have never heard about it, the Bricklin was made in 1974-75, fiberglass body, 2-seater, gull wing door, sports car with 5 liter V-8 engines.
Sooooo..... why not the "law enforcement version" of the MDX. Heck, someone who is good with graphics could have a lot of fun with this. |

Maryland state troopers use Ford Expendations on I270 and other parts
A strange site to see the flashing red and blue lights in the grill of a red "tank" the Ford Exp and the rear view.
... So they are moving to SUV to catch the ole speeder. But no "X's" yet ( and maybe never |

| I've seen many unmarked white SUVs in North Carolina lately, mostly Fords. The Highway Patrol has used Mustangs for years. |

| The best solution to this problem: Escort Passport 8500 or Valentine V1---take your pick. |

About 1 year ago I saw the same thing on I284 near Chicago. Additionally the driver pulled over for speeding in a corvette was a women. She was pulled over by a women State Police officer. |

| We have the same thing here in Florida. I started seeing them about 2 years ago. I live about 5 minutes from a Florida Highway Patrol station and here is the short list 3 Ford Excursion SUVs (1 burgundy, 1 navy blue, 1 painted with the FHP color scheme) 4 or 5 plain (unamarked) 4 door sedans (i thing crown victorias) and 3 camaros (1 black, and 2 FHP color schemes). NONE of the above vehicles have roof mounted lights. |

In the UK they have had them for years. On Motorways (Interstates) and dual carriageways they also have speed camera's mounted on poles loaded with film. After a while you get to know where they are and can adjust accordingly.
The US is fortunate that it is only recently that Police forces have started to use unmarked cars. Still a pain in la derriere though.:( |

Lamborghini Countach in Columbus, OH and a twin turbo 300Z in Cincinnati, OH. The Lambo was bone stock red with just a light bar. At least the 300Z had a pretty impressive paint job (with graphics about D.A.R.E and drugs - obviously seized).
Unfortunately, I live in Ohio..... |

| Dale- Wa state has had of all things taxi cabs, suburbans, and vw bugs as under cover state patrol cars for awhile now 5+ yrs. I bet the cop that got the bug pissed off his sargent one day and got demoted!!!!:D |

| joebergner ... Maybe the "bug cop" isn't upset ... talk about stealth ... that officer should be able to sneak up on almost anyone ... well, if they are going slow enough :2: |

I'd be a little nervous pulling over for a car that wasn't clearly marked and easily recognizable as a "cop car". I don't like the idea of stealth cars -- what's to keep some gang-bangers (or someone's ex-spouse, etc.) from getting some funky lights on their car and pulling you over with mayhem in mind.
Terrible idea. :28: |

Isn't this baiting? I've noticed that when one 'vette sees another, they both speed up... |

I think that's an excellent point. I would support my wife anytime she did not feel safe pulling over.
Then the cop would pull along side and start flashing his badge, etc. ...not a good situtation. On the other hand, how does one readily recognize a legitimate motorcycle cop under all conditions? |

I had a similar experience where a "Stealth CHP" sped up and tailgated me in the left lane at night. I sped up to pass a car on my right in order to change lanes and allow the car to pass. As soon as I did that, the lights come on and I was pulled over for 'speeding'.
Typical game...:3: :3:  |

| As some of our Hawaii members can attest, the police there use their personal vehicles as patrol cars. So cops there drive anything from Buicks to Broncos. It's been a few years since I moved to the mainland, so who knows, there may be an MDX or 2 laying in wait for unsuspecting speeders. |
|
|
| srpbep |
Would serve those folks right that chose to drive MLs, X5s, RX300s, etc.
I ASSUME Hawaii passed a law making it ILLEGAL for an MDX to pull over another MDX UNLESS the officer wanted to:
Simply get a better look at another X !!!
Wanted to give the other X driver tickets to the symphony.
etc. |

About one month ago, I was in NE Tennessee and saw a Mustang with blue lights flashing had a MB MDX with NJ plates pulled over. I hope it was not one of our members. :( |

Hey Worm,
I always thought there were no speed limits on the autobahn or has the German government wussed out recently? I bet a well placed brat could fix that puppy.
I have had a radar detector in my car for close to 20 years and only got one ticket and that was from a cop using VASCAR. Generally I find the Illinois State Troopers don't have radar on that much but the local cops do almost all the time. I also have seen unmarked Cameros or other cop toting sports cars on the interstates for several years here.
However, the best stunt they pulled was parking Sate Police cars along the tollways with dummies sitting in them since they could not afford to man the cruiser with a live cop. However, it gets better, since they published in the newspaper where these cars were going to be placed! So much for stealth law enforcement!! |

LOL! He mentioned in a seperate thread that while the autobahn is speed-limit-free, the gov't is very strict w/in-town speed limits. |
