Has anyone heard anything definitive on whether there will be an upgrade available for my 2002 Navigation Unit?
I know that the new 2.05 version disc is scheduled to come out sometime in September (or is it actually already available?)
I read in someone's post that there may be a dual-layer DVD that would accomplish much of the same things as the new 2nd generation navigation unit. Is this true? What would be needed to facilitate such an upgrade? I know it wouldn't be voice-recognition, but I would like to have the detail of the 2nd generation system...
What should I be looking for?
Please help..... |

First off, version 2.05 was released last september (9/26/01)
On upgrades, there is nothing definitive, but the dealership General Manager, who I have a deposit for an '03 with, said that they are coming up with some sort of "kit" to upgrade older units, which would swap the old single-layer drive and 8-channel GPS receiver to a DUAL-LAYER drive and 12-channel GPS receiver. Now, this would serve to accomplish the following:
Faster processing speed as in the new generation unit
Far better positional accuracy (as a result of 12-channel GPS processing)
an 8+GB of space versus the old 4.7GB DVD resulting in the upgraded over 7 million Points-of-Interest. However, I'm getting conflicting info as to whether the road network has been expanded to provide true FULL-DETAILED COVERAGE OF THE ENTIRE U.S. (of course, all of this is based on the New Navi from the 2003 Honda Accord). The press releases and news articles say ".....improvements include an expanded map database covering virually all roads in the United States....." .......however, I was looking at the 2003 Honda Accord brochure and where it describes the Navigation system there is a small asterisk next to it and at the bottom of the page it says "......*only major streets, roads and highways are mapped outside metropolitan areas. See the navigation system owner's manual for the current detailed coverage areas....." (This doesn't make any sense to me, as this level of mapping already exists in current Navi units....so where's the improvement?? ) ......it's possible that the brochure just printed the "generic" exclusions usually put in place to protect companies. I called Honda, and they said they could not give me any specifics on this as the Accord NAVI Model would not be out till January 2003.
However, as you noted, I don't believe the voice activation feature could be incorporated as it would require modifications to the dash and integrated steering-wheel controls as well an integrated microphone in the headliner near the map lights.
Usually, by this time, Acura has info on updated DVDs, but on speculation, it is possible that they're working on a complete upgrade for older systems and therefore the delay! |

| I just picked up my MDX with Navi. about a week ago. The navi. showed that it was the 2.06 version. I guess this is the newest version. |

There may be a difference between software version and database version. I complained to my dealer about the software bug which causes the screen to invert in color when breadcrumbs is turned on. I was told there was an update that would be available in a few weeks (this was a couple of weeks ago) and they just insert the disk, install the software upgrade, and remove the disk. I have not yet checked up on whether they have this updated disk yet.
Im also curious if the software upgrade includes the setup for selecting the backup camera that will be available with the '03 and I hope can be installed in the '02.
Of course, I really would want the hardware/software upgrade for the Nav that Vicpai has discussed above. |

What they are probably doing is loading the software from the 2.06 and then you still use your old database disk.
When I had my old 2.03 and 2.05 (with bug loaded), the black screen was still in the system with the 2.03 disk installed. To go back to the 2.03 code you had to force a reload of the op system. They are probably doing just the reverse.
Does anybody have the URL for ordering the software upgrades? I lost the bookmark and cannot find it. It was on the Honda site I thought.

I looked last night and could not find it. Was in Honda's website on the Odyssey page. Was not there when I looked, or at least I could not find it. You could check coverage areas in the past, I was going to check if they had coverage info for 2.06 mentioned a few posts ago. |

Go to www.acura.com and then select "owning" from the list on the right. You then have to register either as an owner or you can choose "test drive owner link" .
Once this is done, login and go to "customer relations" from the drop-down menu and choose FAQs. Scroll down, and it will have a question that pertains to odering the DVD online. Click on the link, and voila you have that same window that will pop up giving you coverage areas etc. Just checked it yesterday and it still has version 2.05 as the latest. Checked it again a few minutes back and it gave me a message saying that the "the website is temporarily unavailable" or something to that effect Later on when the site comes back on I'll try to post a direct link to this, if it allows me to do that (not sure how that works, now that you have to login to enter that area of the site) |

| Just checked and it still shows version 2.05 on the website. Thanks for the links vicpia and lrpba300. |

| By the way, to find your database and software versions, use Setup, Others, Information. You'll see the database version (a rather long number) and your software version (e.g., "2.05e"). |

As one who works extensively with GPS technology, the 8 versus 12 channel advantage is often misunderstood and overhyped. In actuality, once you get beyond 5 satellites, the improvement in position accuracy drops dramatically. The difference between 8 and 12 channels will result in a theoretical improvement of 1.3 feet. Also, rarely will a vehicle with its commonly shaded GPS antenna even be able to see more than 8 satellites. And WAAS is almost completely out of the question on a vehicle as the WAAS satellitles are close to the horizon and generally unreceivable in a vehicle.

I guess the more satellites you can receive the better, if you are dropping bombs or sending in missiles. For those or us trying to get from one place to the next, getting within the correct block is usually good enough. I personally don't need the 1.3 theoretical foot accuracy. |

I have had good results with DeLorme's Earthmate. |

The reason DOD is very interested in a large number of Sats is not really the accuracy, but to avoid blockage and/or jamming.
An 8 channel unit can track and switch between up to 8 birds, but many units do not process all 8 Sats for data. As Mogur mentioned, 5 constant tracks is really a magic number. With a 12 channel, you can track up to 12 birds, so it is easier to keep 5 or more in lock when in a busy city (i.e. Washington DC) or on a mountain road. Do not get hyped by the "12 channel" logic |

| While at the dealership on Friday I asked the Service Manager about the update for the 01-02 models. He said that they have received information that the disc will be made available early February and that no significant information will be updated. He said that the POI's have been increased but no major detailed coverage. Just thought I would pass this info along.:( (Hope he is wrong but his remark was affirmed by the Assistant Serice Manager) |

DavidM or anybody else,
I saw your post and I to am awaiting the Navi software upgrade. Any new news. I saw your post that expected a major software upgrade due for release in October. What do you hear is the status?
Where are you getting your info? Is there a way to get notified of it's availability?
2002 MDX owner.
Thanks, jvstew:rolleyes: |

Register on the Acura website, and they are supposed to let you know when it is available. (Yeah, right! )
My plan is to monitor this board, and we'll probably know before the people at Acura do!!
It's October now, and I would consider this to be "fall". How long we will hvae to wait for it is anyone's guess.
Acura really needs to step up to the plate on this one......
....TOO MANY EMPTY PROMISES ALREADY!!!
(YES, I'M PISSED!!......Just like all the other '01 and '02 buyers.):3:
Due to the delay we've all incurred, I agree with other posters, in that we should get the DVD for free.
(How much do you wnat to bet that never happens......and I am also willing to bet that the coverage is still going to be way short of what the '03 has........:28: |

Hi All:
___Honda has so many good things going for it and this is the kind of item that simply amazes me as to how they can continually let this one slip. Now its time to rev up the class action paperwork I would think?

| xcel, I agree completely. Acura misled us when they sold us the system. They are still still lying. At this point, a full refund is due. Likely my last honda product |

| I love the MDX. But, one of the main reasons I traded the '02 w/ NAVi for an '03 W/O NAVI was for that exact reason! Not one of Acura / honda's better deals...:8: |

I know we have a few lawyers on the board.......
What would it take to get a class-action lawsuit going???
