According to my local dealer where I went to test drive an MDX this weekend the 03' will get 20 more HP. I asked if there was going to be in increase in displacement to the reported 3.8 litres and he stated it was staying at 3.5 with a 20HP increase. Just thought I would pass along.
One thing I really noticed on the highway was considerable windnoise up front on the MDX while traveling about 70MPH. Does this become annoying to any of you current MDX owners or do you just get use to it. |

| I don't actually notice it; in fact, I never noticed any wind noise problem. ~8200 miles. |

| it is louder in higher speed, but acceptable. :) |

The MDX is a very wide and relatively large SUV. For what it is it is fairly quiet. But it is not a sedan and does exhibit some wind noise. For the most part it is not annoying unless there is a lot of cross wind then it can be too loud. |

| I do not have a problem with the wind noise.. Although the radio or screaming baby is on while I am driving... |

Sandman1,
There is dramatic difference in Wind AND Road noise between 2001 models and 2002 models. Which one are you referring to??
I have test driven both, '01 and '02 models extensively up to 85mph (In fact, one dealership here in the Southland, even allowed me to do a side-by-side comparision of both) and here are my observations:
The noise levels (Wind and Road noise) of the 2001 model above 70-75mph are, IMHO, not acceptable for a vehicle that is supposedly in the Luxury category (even for an SUV). Even though the very wide body has a little to do with this, the vehicle still has an overall low aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.36 Cd. Acura identified the MAIN CULPRIT (with reference to wind noise) to be the design of the exterior side mirrors which were creating an unusual amount of turbulence around them, creating most of the racket.
That said, up to about 60mph there is VERY LITTLE difference in noise levels between '01 and '02 models. (The engine does seem a a tad bit more "hushed" and "refined" in 2002 models even at lower speeds). Above 60 mph the difference becomes obvious, and when speeds reach 75mph there is a DRAMATIC difference. IMHO, noise levels in the 2002 model are ACCEPTABLE for a vehicle in this category. They might make even further enhancements to NVH reduction in 2003 models, similar to those found on the 2003 Accord (such as double-door seals etc.)
BTW, several significant enhancements, such as "diffuser style" exterior mirrors, substantial addtion of sound absorbing materials THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE, and a thicker windshield glass resulted in a quieter 2002 model. |

Car and Driver had a quick summary of the possible changes to the 2003 MDX and it listed the same thing...20HP increase but displacement remains at 3.5L.
The summary basically confirmed what jimmy has said. |

Coming off a 3 year 4x4Expedition lease, 3 Grand Cherokees prior to that.
This SUV is sooo QUITE and smooth.................. |

Vic,
Thanks for the background info on the wind noise. The model we test drove was a used 01' sitting on their lot. This may be why the wind noise was so apparent upwards of 70MPH. Glad to hear the 02' are better and 03' maybe even better yet. We will probably be buying an early 03'. |

Just finished a 3500+ mile trip in my 02 MDX from Texas to California and back. At 70+ mph, opening the shade on the sunroof (with the roof closed) added some wind noise, presumably from the roof bars on the Touring package. Mirrors and other wind sources at 70~75 were less noticeable to me than tire noice from various pavements encountered on western U. S. interstates and A/C fan noise.
Everything worked great (went from <600 to 4200+ total miles). A/C contibuted to noise and was regularly producing 30~40 degree cooling from external temperature reading (high observed was 111!). |

Wait till that moonroof seal dries out and compresses a little more...then you'll have some noise to really complain about.

Rob-- does the MDX have any positive attributes from your point of view? |

Good answer; but it would be informative to hear Rob answer the question! |

I have objectively supported Rob on some issues, but I would definitely like to know if he thinks there are ANY positives at all in the MDX. Or is he out there just to put down the MDX in every conceivable manner, rational or not?
Rob, you need to answer this question, if you want to have any credibility.
The MDX may have its flaws, but its certainly a pretty good vehicle overall, in my opinion. |

We had he 2001 MDX Touring and I found that the noise is mostly caused by the rack. It happened that I removed the rack for one weekend, while trying to move one of them to install a box on top and when I could not do that, I left the racks off the MDX for more than 2 weeks. At that time I noticed a reduction in noise.
When I installed the racks back on top, the noise level was little higher. It was easily noticable.
I guess that was the reason, that Acura moved the front rack few inches to the rear for 2002 models. To reduce noise. |
