Need Opinion On 2002 MDX - Click HERE for Original Thread

We have reserved a 2002 Silver Base MDX with a local dealer. At the time we paid the deposit, the salesman promised MSRP with no forced options / accessories. It's expected to arrive at the dealer in 3 weeks.

While time is getting closer, we need some advices from the experts!

1. Are the prices of accessories found on the Acura website reasonable? Is there anyway we can get discount of them from the dealer?

2. Considering the 03's are coming up, should we expect a "below MSRP" price on the MDX? What is the lowest possible price I can get on a 02 (base or touring)?

3. We wanted a base model. Of course, the touring / navi models are better. But how much better? Is it a wiser move to go with the touring or navi? How important is it to get navi?

4. Should we wait for a 03?

Thanks ahead for the advices!

The answers/opinions are out there. Spend some time using Search and browse for a while.

For example, the accessory prices on the Acura website are MSRP and are therefore neither good nor bad. But Tim at www.hondacuraworld.com will give discounted prices on all genuine accessories.

IMO, if you get a 2002 for MSRP, then make sure you get the base(premium) with navi. as this will not be available for 2003 MDX. If you just want a base then perhaps you should wait for the 2003 as more features will be available. I got the 2002 base with navi. as I did not want to pay the extra $2,500 for the touring package just to get the navi. for a 2003 model.

The accessories shown on the Acura site are at retail. If the dealer doesn't want to give you a deal on them, you can get any of them at hondacuraworld.com at a significant discount.

Thanks for the opinions on accessories. For stuff like running board, if I get from hondacuraworld.com, where would I get them "installed"? Will I end up paying extra for labor / services? :2:

Most accessories install very easy for do-it-yourselfers. The instructions can be downloaded from Tim's website.

..... and if you buy now in the month of September, you'll get an additional 10% off Tim's already VERY VERY VERY LOW prices (ACCESSORIES ONLY).

The running board/side step install does seem like you could do it yourself. If you took it to a shop (i.e. a truck/suv accessory shop), they would probably charge you about $50-100 to do it, imho.

Besides all others already mentioned, you can also take them to the dealer to install. Based on our own experience, dealers have parts and labor priced seperately. For parts, usually there is no way they can beat Tim's pricing but I've read from this board some of them try to match. For labor, in our area (NJ), Acura's labor rate is around $80-$90/hour, and they have standard labor hours for each accessory. So you can easily do the math. Hope this helps. :)

It probably would be easier to evaluate the accessory install on a case by case basis. Depending on your level of DIY expertise, you may want to install the item yourself.

If not, don't hesitate to compare labor prices. For instance, you don't nessasarilly have to go to an Acura dealer. Body shops, garages, ect., may get you a better labor rate. Just make sure you are comfortable with their level of expertise.
