I know several have mentioned XM radio on the board in the past. Wanted to bring notice to something I ran accross, it got me a great price. Moderators, I do not mean this as an "advertisement" (I am not with XM, selling etc), if it crosses a line please delete it. It was such a good deal, I wanted to bring notice

There is a "friends and family of XM" sale going on, $99 for the NEW sony car unit, home unit, or Pioneer RF (with the antenna). For cars with XM ready radio, tuners are $79. Saves about $200 off going rate. There is a thread at http://www.clubxm.com/phpBB/viewtop...forum=2&start=0 talking the subject. Many felt it a scam, but I e-mailed a rep at XMRadio, and got a return reply with needed info. Then called the number, got through and made the order. If you have been thinking about XM, might want to look at the thread and e-mail one of the reps mentioned. Only good through end of the month. If you have problems getting to a rep from that thread, mail me and I can give you the e-mail from rep I went through

Once again, I am not affiliated at all. Just thought $99 was a great deal

I wonder if they have an option for the fM modulator vs. the tape adapter.
Someone posted before I thought that the tape adapter was superior. I thought the cassette adaptor is always the cheap way out, as the tape drive by it's nature has a more limited frequency response.

So do you have yours now, and no problems?

Dale,

Have not gotten mine in yet, expect it the end of next week.

In the old version Sony, there was an RF version. I believe they are working one for the new version, but not out yet. The cassette version is more portable, but you do have a wire out the front of the unit. With the RF, all wires are hidden. Sound wise, I doubt there is a big difference, as RF or Cass. limits the frequency response over a direct wire. There is the option of using an Aux in, which should be better quality. Do not believe the MDX has Aux in though. Some have wired units in to replace a CD changer, but of course that is custom cables. I will probably look into aftermarket RF for my MDX, but wanted the Sony portable so I can move it between cars and my bike.

If you just want one for the MDX, and it will not be moved, the Pioneer RF is the way to go

I agree, a direct input would alway be better. I may give them a call and get more info, thanks!
But is joining that forum the only prerequisite?

Dale,

Actually you do not even join the forum. I e-mailed a person at XM radio, Amy.Schneidau@xmradio.com, and she sent me a response with instructions. An 800 number, promotion code, her phone number, and thats it. Made the call and it worked. I actually got the first hint of the promo from the Porsche Boxster board. Just joined the XM radio one to ask a couple of questions..

One more question, and I really appreciate your help! What kind of antenna are they supplying or are you planning to use?

They suppy the "new Sony" unit. It is smaller "hockey puck" shaped unit. Have seen pics, but not in person, so unsure on the size (from appearance standpoint). But it is a big improvement over the one Sony used a year ago. There is a pic of it on http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/...00&I=158ANXM100

Dimensions given are 2-3/16"W x 1-1/4"H x 2-3/4"L .

As a note, if you buy the kit at a Best Buy for example, it does not come with the antenna. This deal does include it

New to the board, so induldge me if this has been posted before. Looking to get a "neat" solution adding an XM to the MDX. Don't want anything dash mounted. Any recommendations? Plus any of you that have installed an XM aftermarket kit-how difficult was it, do I have to rip the dash apart, or is there an easy hook up and neat way of intsalling the antenna without ripping out the roof lining?

The Sony I bought, as are the Delphi and Pioneer units, are both dash mounts in theory. I mounted my Sony under the coin tray in that flat area, does not look stock but not bad either. Certainly not as visible as a true dah mount.

You can run the antenna cord w/o removing the roof liner. I ran along the door jams, to the back, and out accross the rubber liner. Fairly easy to do, not visible, and no leask. The new Sony version does not look to bad either

On tearing "dash" apart, depends on the unit you gtet. With Sony, my version came with a Cig lighter power cord and cassette adapter. To use those, you would not have to remove anything. To use the Pioneer with RF, or to add the Sony with RF as I did, you have to pull the radio trim off and radio out. Is not very hard to do at all, pull the coin tray out (6 screws I think), stick fingers up and poke out the trim panel in 1 corner, grab the panel and gently pull it off (you kind off wiggle so as not the break it), then 6 screws for the radio. You do need to be a little careful with the radio edges, can scratch the dash if not careful. I am very happy with the RF approach, sounds pretty good and no visible wires.

The other alternatives are to use RCA adapters into the CD input on radio, there is a thread on this now. Would provide better sound than FM Mod, but I had a external changer and am pretty happy w/ fm. Would work easily with the Sony and Delphi, not sure on Pioneer. Also can repalce radio......

If I were buying again (knowing my $99 deal is now gone, incredible BTW) I would look first at the Delphi, then Sony.

mcclendons,

There is one version of the CD-changer input that will work even if you have an externam CD-changer. It will work as a bypass. I'd e-mail info@streeteffectz.com . Again, I have no financial affiliation with them either, just a real happy customer;)

In the XM Radio Delphi thread, I also mentioned that I am seeking for help on adding Delphi FM modulator to the MDX Touring's Bose. The Delphi FM modulator seems very similar to other FM modulator.

Could anybody point me to the right direction or show the instructions to do this on the MDX.. like how to get to the back side of the Radio/CD player?

Thanks.
