| Just what is the "Gyro" part of the Navi system? Before I retired I flew transport aircraft that were equipped with Inertial Nav Systems (INS) that navigated overwater exclusively with gyro sensors which sensed motion. Now I know that the MDX Navi system is built primarily on the use of the Global Position Satellite system but where does the "Gyro" enter into this equation? Is there one and if so how does it spin up so fast as to be used within seconds after starting the car. |

I believe with INS or 'fixed reference' navigation' (stars, etc.) a gyro is required to keep the vehicle (boat, plane, etc.) at the correct attitude in relation to the reference object, and then compute a desired course to a destination.
With a GPS link, only yaw rate and vehicle speed info are needed to continuously plot a course to a desired destination.
We have a Navi whiz or two on here who can give you a better explanation, I am sure. But in any case, no gyro is required. |
