You just have to keep going at it. I think there are about 38 items to remove. All of them easy, just takes awhile. A couple items are tricky only if you don't have the factory service manual, such as the clip that holds the sun visor in place (very easy to remove if you know the secret; otherwise you'll end up applying a whole lot of force and break it off, thinking it comes off in a conventional manner, but it doesn't).
No special tools or skills needed. Just a lot of motivation. And the $100 manual. Would be a good time to also install sprayable sound deadening material on the roof, after taping off all the wires, motor, bolt-heads and moving parts.
Good luck.
Just dropped the left side of mine in preparation for a track install using yakima-accessories-compatible rails of a 2001 Expedition, and the cross bars of an RX300, with bolt and gasketed nuts special ordered from Yakima. |

Like TCB mentioned, no special tools needed. I think all I used was a Phillips screwdriver. See below:
SunVisor - 1 each
Front Vanity Lights - 4x
Ceiling Hand thingys - 2 each (total 8)
Rear Vanity light - 2x
- Twist 2 hooks for the sunvisors
- Remove weather stripping/s OFF (Doors & Sunroof)
- Pop the Pillar panels (A, B & C) OFF (carefull not break the gromets(?))
- unscrew plastic screw behind the rear vanity light
See my ideo Install below...

Hi, there -- I am just one more step away from removing the ceiling panel. It sounds easy but ... I simply don't know how to remove the upper Pillar panel B! I tried to pull (very carefully) anchor cover (the one cover seat belt bolt) from upper Pillar panel but without good luck.
Does anyone have the picture to show how to remove the anchor cover? Or, any tip will be really helpful ... |

| Finally, I removed the anchor cover!! If anyone needs the tips, let me know. |

| Removing the headliner doesn't sound that difficult, just tedious. However, I've got an 04 with the side curtain airbags. Anyone have any experience removing the pillars with the airbags in them? Am I going to end up screwing with the system? |

Unless you use a utility knife and slice through harnesses with a spiraling yellow tape around it, you won't damage any SRS components by simply unscrewing screws, unbolting bolts, and dislodging trim panels. Just to make sure you don't accidentally blow the air-curtain in your face, the standard warning is to always disconnect the battery before fooling around SRS components (flip the ignition on an off to discharge any retained current). You'd want to record radio settings and make sure you have the radio and navi security codes handy before you pull the neg battery terminal. Wear eye protection both when you pull the negative terminal.
We tell everyone who starts to dismantle their MDX to get themselves a service manual so that you'd know what you are doing. Too bad they don't offer commissions on referrals. |
