I'm looking to move a queen bed, and am wondering if my roof rack (and roof) can safely support the weight of a queen size mattress and bedspring.
Does anyone know how much weight the MDX roof can safely support?
Thanks,
Chris |

There is a small stick on the rack and also mentioned in the MDX Handbook.
The maximum weight you can put on that rack is 165lbs. |

That's correct. 165lbs is the official roof rack weight limit. Just make sure the mattress is tied down properly. Those things are difficult to avoid when they lay on the highway. :)
Oh, one more thing, make sure this doesn't happen :D |

From the pic, would not be a problem with the MDX.......VTM would still keep you going!
Some people will try anything, great pic |

Chris,
As long as the mattress is balanced on the rack. You won't have any problem to move them with your MDX.

| Having followed this website for some time, the concensus view about the X's roof rack is that it's useless. Can someone please elaborate for me why the Touring rack is not functional? |

Thanks for all the great responses. I feel a lot more confident now.
Hopefully, I won't be posting any pictures tomorrow like mgmdx's picture! |

namegoeshere,
It all depends on your needs but in general the MDX factory roof rack is not very useful because it is not adjustable and thus does not provide any flexibility. The cross bars are positioned too close to be useful for carrying a variety of loads. Even closer positioning of the cross bars on the '02 (and likely '03) vs. '01 MDX was implemented to reduce wind noise. This made the rack even less useful. In addition, most attachment accessories available from Yakima and Thule (bike, ski, boat, etc.) are not easily adaptable to the stock MDX roof rack (although some of them do work).
If you plan on carrying a variety of loads and want real utility and load-carrying flexibility in your rack, I recommend an upgrade to either Yakima Tracks or Side Rails solution. |
