Hey,

Does anyone know if the new '03 navi data, setup, and or display will work on the '02's? I really dig the 3D setup from what I have seen from the brochure. Just wondering what us '02 need to do to get the same display, if possible.

Any information would greatly be appreciated. :p

I purchased my 2002 MDX Touring with Nav recently and am expecting it in any day now. I did some research by calling up Acura and asking them if you can get the new software updates and the new geographic points of interest on the 2002 NAV if you used the 2003 NAV DVD (the one that comes with the 2003 MDX). I got a resounding yes to my question. Most of the updates to the Nav (except for the voice recognition) are software updates that are backward compatible to the 2002 MDX NAV (from what they told me). They don't expect the new DVD to be available for sale as an upgrade until December/January even though the 2003 MDX will have it earlier.

I cannot condone this type of behavior. We must all follow the legal rules regarding the copyrights of the DVD. Us, as customer must continue to let the dealers(stealers) rip us off, as that is what they are good for! (except you Tim!). J/K!!!!!!!:D

Not to ruin anyones party, but, as an owner of a DVD burner I can tell you it still won't work. Why? Because I believe the Navi DVD is dual layer for 2003. None of the consumer DVD burners or media for that matter have dual layer capabilities. Dual sidemedia, yes. Dual layer media or burning, no. Sorry folks. I think it is cool though that people will be able to install it on the 01's and 02's.

**Edited to add "for 2003" - darned brain getting ahead of the fingers**

.......I was told a slightly different story by my dealership GM. From what I understand the current Navi system uses a single-layer DVD drive (I could be wrong on this) .......but I certainly do know that the actual DVD disc is, for a fact, a single layer disc with a 4.7GB capacity. So there may be a swap of the DVD drive needed as well (This thought supports what the GM told me: that they were going to have some sort of "adapter-kit" to retrofit older units)

I just called up Acura customer service again to try and get the story. They still state that the upgrade CD will work on the 2002 MDX and that they believe that the software enhancements should be there. He did confirm what you said about single layer DVD, but wasn't aware of any hardware upgrades needed and thought that it would work - though I couldn't get them to say for sure that the new features would be there, only that they have always been there in the past and from the knowledge they had, they thought the new features would work on a 2002 MDX. I guess the real answer will be for someone to get a 2003 MDX CD and try it on a 2002 MDX.

I remember reading in one of the reviews that the 2003 is a single layer DVD with additional points of interest. I was glad to hear because that would make more sense why we may be able to get these new features on our 2001 & 2002 navagation.

I really hope that the new DVD works on the 01/02 models. It looks like a much nicer interface, and the only thing earier models would miss is the voice.....

I think most DVD player can play both Single Layer or Dual Layer DVD drive. the 02 comes with 4.7G Single layer DVD and 03 comes with 8.5G DVD. If Acura claims that it is a software upgrade issue, then I think we only need to buy the new DVD to upgrade the 02 Navi. However, I am not sure if the increase in calculation speed is due to hardware upgrade or software.

........Now, that you should mention this, I believe you're right about the fact that MOST newer DVD players are, in fact, able to play SINGLE and DUAL layer DVDs.........So, all that might be required is a simple swap of the old Single layer 4.7GB DVD to the New Dual layer 8+GB DVD

.......however, as far as calculating speed goes, in all the intensive reading I've done on the new Navi, I haven't seen one place where it mentions a FASTER PROCESSOR. Therefore, I'm very inclined to believe that it's possibly a software upgrade. Additionally, there are 2 more clues that lead me to believe this:

1st clue: I remember seeing the actual MENU SCREENS (don't recall exactly where) for the new Honda/Acura Navi, and it said "select search area" which means they've gone the "Lexus route", by dividing the U.S. into several regions (8 or 9 regions), making for a far more efficient searching method, focusing the destination search on a particular region, rather than searching throughout the entire country. This is how Lexus achieves lightning-speed calculation times, even though it uses the exact same 32Bbit RISC processor as Acura's system.

2nd clue: This supports the 1st clue, because the Acura website (in the MDX section) says that "destination searches of 100 miles or less take less than FIVE seconds to calculate where it previously used to take EIGHTEEN seconds.........note the emphasis on "100 miles or less" indicating a highly LOCALIZED SEARCH mechanism.

I was looking at the brochure and noticed on one of the menus a thing called "Map Input". Do you think they have designed a system to remember and identify breadcrumbs as a road? Just observing.

........"Map Input" has always been one of the available ways of inputting a destination. It simply means that you can specify your destination by choosing it from the ACTUAL MAP, by selecting it as a "point" from the map. (Displays actual map of the destination area and you touch the place on the map you want to be your destination)

Hockeyplayer: the one you did overlook was Go Home. People have asked for this feature before. I have my home in my personal address list but a single selection would be even better.:4:

ACURA NAVIGATION SYSTEM WITH VOICE RECOGNITION
The 2003 MDX features the third generation DVD-based,satellite-linked Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition as anoption on the model with Touring Package. This system has beenenhanced over the previous generation with a wide variety of newfeatures. These enhancements include:

Voice recognition
Rearview camera
Faster route calculation and search speed (up to three timesfaster than the previous generation)
A more comprehensive destination guide with 7 million pointsof interest (previously 3.7 million).
Enhanced graphics
New, enhanced split screen mode for displaying additionalroute information
Day/night visualization modes with user-selectable screenbackground appearance
Enhanced menus and improved surface street mapping
Turn by turn voice guidance in either male or femalevoice
Similar in function to systems offered in Acura RL, TL, and CLmodels, this equipment receives Global Positioning System (GPS) data. That information is combined with signals from an onboard inertialguidance system and information from a DVD database to pinpoint thevehicle's location and help guide the driver to selecteddestinations.

The Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition includescontinuous coverage of 48 states, which for 2003 covers virtually allU.S. roads and 7 million points of interest (compared to 3.7 millionin the 2002 model).

This coverage is conveyed to the driver by both audio and visualcues designed to aid navigation without causing distraction. A maleor female voice can be selected for the audio cues and this voice canbe shut off at any time. A moving map in combination with directionarrows, detailed street names, turning instructions and drivingdistances are provided on the LCD touch control screen. A new splitscreen design enhances on-screen information with a "map view" and"3-D" route visualization of freeway on ramps or off rampssimultaneously-a major step forward in making navigation informationeven easier to understand.

This new generation Acura Navigation System can be controlled bythe driver through either the touch screen display or by the newvoice recognition system. The voice recognition system works when the"talk" button, located on the steering wheel is depressed. Whenspoken to (the microphone is located on the roof console), the systemrecognizes commands such as "find nearest gas station," "find nearestATM," or "find nearest Italian restaurant."

The voice recognition system has a vocabulary of 130 commands andcan recognize virtually any English-spoken accent.Search speed inthis improved system is more than three times faster than in thesystem's previous generation.

A picture-in-picture capability permits simultaneous display of alarge-scale map with detailed turning instructions. The driver alwaysknows the vehicle's current position and a balloon function instantlyreveals the address of any selected location on the map. Points ofinterest can be searched by inputting that destination's telephonenumber. The volume of voice guidance instructions can be adjustedthrough eleven settings and the audio system's speakers areautomatically muted when direction commands are issued.

In addition to using the voice recognition feature to operate thesystem, manual operation is also available, quickly and easily viathe touch screen. Only a few entries are needed to enter destinationsand route calculations are made expeditiously.

A matte finish is used on the display screen to enhance legibilitywhile resisting fingerprints. The same screen used for navigationalso displays trip distance, average fuel mileage, remaining range(miles to empty), elapsed time, outside temperature, and climatecontrol setting information.

If desired, a route with up to five destinations can bepre-programmed. The Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognitionhas the ability to track vehicle position by means of dots on thescreen for those areas not covered by DVD map data - especiallyhelpful when driving off-road.

Another notable enhancement is the addition of a rearview camera. This camera, located on the liftgate sends a picture of the areadirectly behind the MDX to the navigation system screen when thetransmission is moved to the "reverse" position. The view shownextends to over 13 feet behind the bumper with a view width that iswider than the MDX itself.

Have they gotten rid of the annoying PIN entry before going into personal addresses? Did they design this so husbands can hide destinations from their wives? I really don't understand...

I for one am hoping that a major upgrade is available for the 01/02 nav. I purchased my MDX 3 weeks ago out of necessity. I simply could not wait till ????? for a vehicle nor would I. Believe me I didn't sleep a couple nights but had no regrets buying an 02 with the 03 right around the corner. Navigation was one of the first things on my want list. I fully recognized that the MDX had a great system. I for one was slightly disappointed with the detailed coverage of the nav system in the Metro Atlanta area. For those who have not been to Atlanta it is so spread out now that it is never uncommon to drive 50+ miles to get somewhere. That being said with urban sprawl I am out side of the detailed coverage area. I had kinda no way of knowing this when I purchased the X. Now don't get me wrong, when you are in the detailed areas this this thing is invaluable. It is extremely accurate and Acura is boasting it to be even more accurate in the 03. Just frustrating when I have to set my "home" as a point 2 1/2 miles away from my "ACTUAL HOME". I will be really upset if a new DVD player will need to be purchased to accept the updated DVD. I have no problem with the "friendly" voice of my nav system and even if there was a choice to switch to a male voice I wouldn't(call it a man thing:) ) I think the camera is a cool idea but life is great without it. I asked a question awhile back that was not answered I believe. That was "Does the Nav DVD control our climate and trip controls." I am asking because I have no idea. I notice that no buttons will work till the DVD boots so.....Is there a possibility that infinite fan control could be possible with an update? All being said, as long as the detailed coverage is greatly improved I for one will be even happier with the system. For those that have not seen the nav in action you look as though you are driving "cross country" even though you are in fully developed neighborhoods. I have noticed posts of some that have been reassured from Acura customer service that the new DVD will work in the 01/02 but.........Keeping my fingers crossed. BTW to all researching into purchasing an MDX you will not be disappointed. You have found an invaluable site with many knowledgeable "friends" that are eager tp help with any questions. And if you are researching into buying an MDX you are probably in the market for an 03 and should disregard the above "babble".

Thanks for listening

Well, yeah it's annoying, until the day someone steals your car (hope it never happens!). At that point, not having your home address (and maybe daycare) easily available to the thief sounds like a good idea.

And there's the whole mistress/wife thing. (What would the other gender equivalent phrase be?...)

Most likely it is a software update. They probably just figured out a more efficent algerithem. (the way a computer interprets and calculates data)

Im really hoping that that the new disc will work in the 02 as i cant stand the voice now.

I think the thief could get my address much easier by opening the glove compartment and looking up my registration and insurance cards... I would sure be very upset if MDX forced me to unlock the glove compartment with my key every time!!
